A New Horse In Our Family

Bringing a horse into your family unit, especially if there are kids involved, is not a small thing. You must think about all the things you will be needing to be prepared, like feed, all of the grooming tools, tack, blankets, and a shelter are just a few of the things you will be needing. More than that, what about the animal itself. What must you look at to be sure that this is the right horse, for there are so many out there.

A horse who has in his past been abused can be a nice thing to for the horse, but what about the safety of your kids? Can an abused horse be dangerous? The answer to this question is a great big yes. The animal would not hurt anybody intentionally, but out of a simple reflex because he thinks he is going to be hit up the side of his head, can be a threat to little people and big ones alike. The horse ducks, and you end up with a huge head in your face or where ever. Some of the other backgrounds you might want to be looking for are these:

an ex racehorse

an ex rodeo horse

a horse who has been used on a cattle ranch

a horse who has been used in a school

a horse who has been only owned by adults

a horse who has been handled be children

a horse who has been involved in an accident of any kind

a horse who shies from certain things because of some kind of an accident

This may look like an extensive list of things to ask or find out about, but it is absolutely mandatory if you are going to be handling him, and especially if you intend to let your kids be around him or her.

Here are some of the things to either look for or ask about–horses who have been a working horse, say with cattle are usually a very easy ride for the average rider. I had a cattle horse once, and the only habit he had that I would suggest watching out for is that every time we came within eye shot of a cow, he would take off and want to do his old job, herding. If the cow is within reach you may find yourself eye to eye with a good sized piece of beef. If the cow is behind a fence you may find yourself running up and down a fence line until you get him back under control.

The chances of coming into contact with a once race horse are not much, but a lot of Thouroughbreds have been bred for or have been race horses. These horses have a propensity to want to run full out or race another horse on a trail ride or on the street or where ever. Just be careful to keep this horse behind the rest, and not to run him hard and confuse him with his old training.

A horse who has been trained in English arena jumping or in that type of a school loves to jump. This horse may want to take a flying leap over anything that looks like a jump to him. A gate, logs, a ditch, are all things to watch for. In a manner of speaking, you must be careful on any new horse, that you have not had experience on for there are many things that he or she may do that you may not be aware of.

I had another horse who was a very gentle giant. He was half quarter horse and half Belgium, and was very large, but although his height was bigger than average, any five year old child was safe on his back. He was always very careful and walked slowly with the children, but again if encouraged would lope or gallop with any adult.

One day I let a friend of mine barrow him, which is something I would encourage nobody to do. This woman went out for about one hour, and returned him thanking me for the ride. He was always the horse I would let friends barrow because of his good nature. About a week later, while I was out riding him, a large pepsi delivery truck went past us, and he took off in a wild and frantic run home. I had never seen him act like this, and later found out that when my friend had borrowed him last week, they had had an accident with a similar truck, which she did not think was anything to worry about for he seemed uninjured. I took him to the vet, and he examined him to find that he had a deep muscle bruise on his hind quarters, and the collision with the pepsi truck was one that he never forgot. Every time he saw one after that he had the same reaction, and I can say that in my opinion the horse was ruined. He was no longer the gentle giant I once had, and was not trustable like he was before.

When something like this happens sometimes nobody is aware, or those who are aware don’t say anything unless asked about a horses quirks. Be aware, and be careful to ask all the questions you can think of, and be sure that you ride the animal in all the situations possible before you buy. Be sure to ask if he spooks, has any habits or quirks. Be sure to get the name of the vet that has been caring for him and give him a call. This is sort of like talking to a mechanic who has been caring for a car.

Think about the size of the horse in relation to the size and weight of your child. A horse can weigh up to 2000 pounds, and a child somewhere around 50 to 100 pounds in comparison. Introduce them, and always watch them for the first few rides, making sure that neither has bad habits with the other. We do want this to be a good experience for both of them do we not?

What kind of people are gonna watch “The Tooth Fairy”?

It opens at more than 3,000 theaters! WTF

I watched the trailer and almost throw up. The movie is horse manure. I can’t see kids interested in watching this. Not normal kids at least.
Rotten Tomatoes: 2 positive reviews out of 32.
Consensus: Dwayne Johnson brings the full force of his charm (and his appropriately pale chompers) to the title role, but flat direction and a committee-written script render The Tooth Fairy unacceptably dull.

It looks stupid in a funny way. I think dressing the actor, whatever his name was, in a dress was a lame attempt at comedy.

Adapted from the beloved novel by Walter Farley, this 1979 family classic was hailed by no less than hard-to-please critic Pauline Kael, who wrote that “it may be the greatest children’s movie ever made.” A visual feast from start to finish, the timeless tale of The Black Stallion plays out on almost mythic terms. A young boy survives a shipwreck and is stranded on a deserted island with a gracefu…

Horse Training Tips—How To Communicate With Your Horse

Are you planning to break in your new horse but you do not know how to do it? It is important to do a lot of research first before you ride on a horse. Riding an untrained horse can be dangerous. You might have an accident and get yourself injured. Horses are not small like dogs or cats. They are bigger, heavier, and more powerful than the animals that you are used to. Make sure that you know some basic horse training tips before you start training a horse.

Below is a list of some horse training tips that you should know to have a successful and safe training with your horse.

If you feel scared or nervous while training a horse, the horse will be able to feel it. And if the master or trainer is nervous, the beast will also get skittish. Be confident when you come near a horse to earn its trust. Your voice and touch should be gentle but firm. One of the most important horse training tips is to wear the proper outfit. Wear your equestrian clothes if you like. Or just wear something comfortable and safe. Avoid wearing skirts, high heels, or anything inappropriate. Riding boots are great. And do not forget to wear your helmet.

If you want to lead your horse to a certain direction, point your belly button to that direction. Do not lean forward or do not pull the rein or the horse’s mane too hard. Your horse will feel where your body is pointing when you pointing your belly button to the direction where you want to go.

If you are not really confident about your skills, you can ask an experienced horseman or trainer to go with you and to teach you the basics of horsemanship. You can do this for the first few days. but after some time, you need to do things by yourself.

Horse training question: How long does it really take to train a horse to ride? Youtube videos make it look?

so easy… but, I think they may be creating false hope for the novice. I’m still working on gentling mine. Could you give me various time lines on this? What is your experience.. Gosh, this is gonna help so much, thanks.

There is no definite time period to have a horse trained, it tends to vary. Horses are humbling animals; there will always be something to learn, regardless of how long you’ve been in the field.

Ordinarily, it takes a month or so, but I’ve had wild variations.
Longest it took me was six months, but that was on a traumatised TB stallion who required a lot of special attention.

Shortest amount of time was probably for a lovely Connemara I broke for a friend, she was broke after about ten days.

Like I said, it really varies.

Just remember to be patient and ensure that you and the horse build up a bond of trust; that way the breaking in will be so much easier.
Also, try and let your horse teach you a little something on this journey of learning and discovery.

Teaching As Career

Abstract:

The research paper uncovers the determinants of individuals who choose to be teachers, questionnaires were used to produce evidence which was collected and analysed, some factors were identified as having influenced the choice of teaching as a career and this included social and economic factors. The study found out that key determinant of individual likelihood to choose a teaching career was family background, financial incentives such as the salary and other benefits, it was also evident that career choice was also motivated by other intrinsic rewards that individuals would gain in the process, also the perspective that low pay and low job status was not a factor that would deter those who wanted to chose a teaching career.

INTRODUTION

The main aim of this research was to identify determinants of an individual to choose a teaching career. It examined the influencing factors of family background, the values that people attached to the teaching job and their own perceptions of their job. The research data was to be collected using a research questionnaire which was prepared and pre tested to check whether it was biased, the sample was randomly selected and the questionnaires were mailed to the correspondent wand after the questionnaire was returned data was compiled to undertake statistical inferences.

Policies measures to increase teachers assume that the number of teachers can be increased by increasing the rewards and salaries monetary incentives, this assumption is relevant in the short run, however it is eveident that choice of career is largely influenced by socio economic factors and at the same time cultural background. The Social determinant differ from the other factors in that they are longe term while economic factors are only short term determinants.

Teachers career choice is also believed to have been influenced by what the individuals value in the job and their perceptions of the teaching career, this research paper is therefore aimed at identifying these factors and how they have influenced career choice in the society.

Method

The study involved three respondents from a local school, the sample was randomly selected from the teachers list of the school and permission to undertake the research was obtained from relevant authorities, A mailed questionnaire was sent to the respondents who were expected to return the complete questionnaire within two days.

The questionnaire was to collect information regarding the individual’s background, education level and after the questionnaire was prepared it was pre tested to check whether it was biased, and after verification the questionnaires were mailed to the respondent and the information collected and compiled to undertake statistical inferences.

Findings:

Of the three individuals interviewed two were married and one was single, one was female and two were male and for this reason the random sample was not gender biased and therefore the views of both gender was considered in the study. The study involved mailed questionnaires and all the questionnaires were returned and data was analysed

After the questionnaires were returned the data was analysed to determine whether the respondent had similar patterns in the determination of the career choice, some of the factors identified that had led to career choice was education level. From the data it was found out that the level of education played a major role in determining what the position the individual was to take in the society.

From the data collected it was found out that individuals chose the career due to influence of family members, in the case where family members were teachers the other members had a high possibility that they would take up the same role in the society. The respondents viewed the family members as role models and for this reason they would take up the same roles as their relatives.

The other factor that led to the choice of career is the education background, having achieved a certain level of education then the individual had no option but to become a teacher, for this reason therefore it is therefore considered that education and the type of courses undertaken play a major role in determining what role the individual was to play in the society.

After data was collected it was found that those respondents with less educated parents were more likely to choose a teaching career, this was as a result of the analysis of data aimed at collecting the family background of the individuals who were pursuing the teaching career. Analysis also showed that career decisions was found to be related to the course of studied at college or university. It was found that social science course studied led to individuals choosing a teaching career.

Other factors identified to have contributed to the choice of career include the possibility of sharing knowledge, job satisfaction and the length of holidays. On sharing the knowledge it was found out that teachers did not take this factor seriously, non of the teachers took the part of this part of their job as significant, the length of holidays associated with the career was also not an important factor in choice of career, however the job satisfaction part was an important factor in determining the choice of career, due to the individuals motivation and their love for the job they were satisfied with their job and their choice of career depended on the job satisfaction factor.

The respondent also reported to have been motivated by intrinsic factors which included job satisfaction and the interest in the teaching job, however they reported not to have been influenced by job status and salary. However the teachers reported that job security ewas a determining factor in the choice of career, teachers preferred to become teachers because of job security that is not evident in other types of jobs. Therefore in this case the respondent agrteed to have been influenced by the level of job security associated with the career.

The respondents also agreed that the career was very rewarding; the respondents agreed that teaching was appealing to them and this is because they believed that the career offered them values they were looking for in a job. They reported that teaching was a rewarding career according to them than other careers available, this was in terms of financial rewards and other incentives associated with the career.

Training in teaching career and the pursuit of social science were also found to be contributing factors in the choice of career, the respondents reported to have a very positive experience when undertaking their education to become teachers, the positive experience at school offered an opportunity that led them to choose to become teachers due to the positive perception towards the education institution. For this reason therefore the personal experience at school is also a factor that influences the choice of career, positive experience of the individual in early years of school influenced them to choose the career. Negative experience at the early years of school will therefore lead to a negative perception towards the teaching career.

Despite the rewards associated with the teaching career the respondents Confirmed that teachers more likely to have heavy workload and also were underpaid for the services they offered, however this did not put them off from becoming teachers or even quitting their jobs due to the intrinsic motivation associated with the career. On job status the teachers viewed their job has a job with medium status, for this reason they did not feel inferior to speak about their career to other professionals.

The respondents also confirmed that when choosing the career as teachers they were well aware of the financial rewards associated with the career

for teaching when deciding upon a career. When their responses were entered into the logistic model, the accuracy of predicting who were likely to be teachers and non-teachers increased from 90% to 94%, while that for confirmed and marginal teachers increased from 80% to 81%. This shows that financial incentives did not dramatically change individual career plans, although they did make it easier for those who wanted to teach to go into teaching. As determinants of career choice financial incentives were not as important as the values people attached to a job and their perceptions of teaching. They did not appear to have much influence in persuading non-teachers into teaching. These are people who have already made up their minds about their career paths and would not be likely to be persuaded otherwise. Those who reported that they were most likely to be persuaded by these incentives were marginal teachers (Table 4).

Table 4 – Reported influence of financial incentives

Career decisions

36

‘Golden handcuff’ deal

32

60

33

The two incentives that were likely to influence people’s career choice were the offer of training salaries and the exemption from fees (Table 4). Shortage subject bursaries appeared to be the least effective (because they apply only to a subset of cases). Shortage subject bursaries and exemption of fees also did not seem to be effective in persuading maths and science students. Maths and science students were the most likely to be influenced by the ‘golden handcuff’ deal compared to students in other subject groups, and least likely to be influenced by the offer of training grants.

Male and female students did not appear to show any difference in their responses to these financial incentives. Exemption of fees appeared to be the most effective in influencing the career decisions of non-white students. These findings have (sometimes negative) implications for policies to increase ITT recruitment of ethnic minorities and those in shortage subjects.

Training grants and shortage subject bursaries were the two incentives most widely known among students and proved to be most influential in getting those who were interested in teaching take up teacher training. It was effective in attracting those who were already interested in teaching, but not those studying shortage subjects at university. Training salaries made it easier for some to give up their job, but certainly did not act as a ‘carrot’ to those who had not considered teaching. Many had applied for course entry before the schemes were announced, while others would have gone into training anyway, though much later, after they have saved up enough. This point was clearly illustrated by PGCE students in the focus group interviews.

English PGCE students:

Anna: I umm.. I mean the thing is because I applied really early on the course really really really on and I knew that I wanted to do it, and I’d already taken a year to work to try to save some money up and so actually it’s a surprise when the training salaries were announced.

Michelle: Like me I applied before the salary was introduced. I am like Anna, I applied to do the course and, and was accepted on the course before the training salary was announced so it was a nice surprise – and exactly the same I didn’t entirely anticipate how much it probably would cost to do it, and I’m living at home. I mean I’m actually not even paying rent but I’m driving a car everyday and you know, so the little expense I didn’t even anticipate before.

Nina: I think because I sort of applied late on and I hadn’t really thought about training salary didn’t really you know haven’t been keeping up with that so I wasn’t sure, but I guess I just knew that because it’s what I really wanted to do that I would have the support of my parents I guess so I knew that I’d be able to struggle through this with my parents. Just being in that lucky situation and you know…

Hannah: I had the promise of that support from my mum and dad as well which, which because I didn’t know when I was going to get this training salary because I live in the Isle of Man and they have different rules and everything, but I was just so relieved when I did…

Jemma: I would have just done it a lot later. I would have done it like 10 years down the line if they haven’t offered the salary.

Nicola: I would have done it later as well (Jemma, and Edward would have done it later as well)

PGCE history students

Nick: I suppose the question to ask about our motivation is which of us was motivated by the 6,000 grant. I personally wasn’t.

Anthony: I wasn’t because I applied before.

Nick: In retrospect, the same I didn’t realise when I applied because I want to teach, but now knowing how much it cost….

Tom: Same here

Andy: I applied before. It didn’t attract me, I only come in before…

Charlotte: I probably would perhaps have waited for two or three years until my children are older and I wouldn’t need to pay childcare.

PGCE maths students also applied before the policy came into place and for some it did make it easier for them take up training.

Marnie: I applied before.

Toby: So do I. (There was general agreement – students nodding their heads)

Fran: I was going to apply about 3 or 4 years ago. I actually got the application form, decided where I was going to apply to and I was earning about 14,000 pounds at that time, not a huge amount of money but then the grant that I would have got for doing the PGCE was 1,000 pounds and I thought that was stupid I’m going to run into so much debt, what’s the point, you know, I’ll put it off and I’ll try something else, so I tried another couple of jobs umm, and then when I decided that I was going to reapply definitely at the time they said you’d get two and a half thousand pounds and then when they say you’ll get 6 thousand pounds it all coincided with me applying, I said great really good, really good.

Interviewer: So you’ve already made the decision even before these policies came into being, but that policy did help you.

Fran and Catherine: Oh yeah.

Lack of publicity regarding these incentives seemed to be an issue. Some comments made by students in their questionnaire returns with regards to these incentives included:

Throughout my degree course, no one actually came to persuade us to go into teaching.

3rd year Law student

I am interested in teaching but not sure how to get into it, whether my law degree is enough, and what kind of qualifications I would need.‘

3rd year Law student

There should be more publicity if the incentives were to be effective. Many of us have not heard of these incentives at all. We are not aware of their existence.

2nd year Language & Communication student

I have considered teaching in the secondary sector but still undecided whether to go into teaching or not. The reason for my indecision is the lack of information available. I don’t have any clue of what to do .

2nd year Accountancy student

Had no information about teaching, rather get a job.

Have not been given any information regarding being teacher.

CONCLUSION

This study reminds us that merely introducing financial incentives to recruit teachers is not enough. Individual decisions to teach depend, to a large extent, on the values attached to a job and perceptions of teaching. My findings reveal that there are fundamental differences between non-teachers and confirmed teachers as to what they look for in a job and in their perceptions of teaching. This study and that of Smithers and Hill (1989) revealed that those who had not considered teaching were more likely to perceive it as offering intrinsic rewards and person-oriented satisfaction but were more likely to be motivated by extrinsic rewards. On the other hand, those who go into teaching were not likely to stay on unless their experiences with students and the school, in general, are rewarding. Clear lessons emerge, not only for policymakers, but also principals and school administrators. Teaching must be seen as an attractive and financially rewarding career. At present, policy is too much focused on teacher training and the incentives and barriers to that, and the move from training to post. If these results are to be believed, then work to enhance the status and professional prestige of teachers in later career will be just as important, long-term, in attracting high-quality students to the profession.

If I begin training now (I am 19) . . . ?

. . . how long would it take and at what age could I achieve my BHS stage 4 and then the BHS Instructor Level 1 (The level before Fellow)? I do have my own horse’s in stables, my sister rides them everyday so I could get lots of practise in. I have done the Knowledge and Care courses for Levels 1,2,3 and 4 so only need to focus on the riding aspect. Could I do it all in 3 Years?

Well without seeing you ride it is IMPOSSIBLE for anyone to answer that question….your sister rides your horses everyday, is she taking the exam then? Look, if you are competent you will get your 1 and 2 without any problems, but you will need to get some professional help for the other two exams. My advice would be to try and book a lesson at a training/examing centre and ask them to do an evaluation of where you are at….I would say that three years is possible but you’ll need to be a decent rider to achieve that. Stage 4 riding is a very difficult exam to pass unless you are riding everyday.

Good luck with your I.

How to Choose a Horse Rug

There are many different types of horse rugs, with various characteristics and functions. Therefore, the first step to choosing a horse rug is to decide which type you require for your horse. To assist you in this decision, following is a list of the main types of rugs and an explanation of their function:

- Fly Rug. The purpose of this is to protect the horse from flies that bite or sting. They are more commonly and accurately referred to as ‘fly sheets’ rather than ‘fly rugs’, as they are typically a thin plastic sheet or mesh, rather than a fabric rug. One can also get ‘fly masks’, which are made out of the same material and are intended to protect the head (especially the eyes and ears) from flies. As they are a thin sheet they provide little warmth or insulation, although some can provide protection from wind and rain.

- Turnout rugs. These are intended to provide insulation (warmth), to protect horses when they are outside. The amount of warmth depends largely on the amount of insulation, which is typically measured in terms of weight rather than thickness. Consequently, rugs with a moderate amount of insulation are referred to as Lightweight Turnout Rugs, while those intended for maximum warmth are known as Heavy Turnout Rugs. Some turnout rugs are resistant or impervious to rain.

- Coolers. Although they may look like some turnout rugs, their purpose is quite different. They are intended to help the horse dry by ‘wicking’ moisture away from its coat, and at the same time protecting the horse from cooling while wet (a wet horse can quickly become chilled if it is exposed to cold and/or wind while it has a wet coat). They are typically used after exercise, when the weather is cool or windy, and removed once the horse has dried off. These are also known as ’sweat rugs’.

- Rain sheets. These are typically a thin sheet, with little or no insulation. It is intended to keep the horse dry and can also provide protection from the wind.

- Stable rugs. Also known as ’stable blankets’, these are similar to turnout rugs in that they provide warming insulation, but are intended to be used when the horse is stabled rather than when it is outside.

- Saddle rugs. A saddle rug (also known as a ’saddle pad’) is placed under the saddle. It provides cushioning between the saddle and the horse, which protects the horse from the relatively hard saddle and at the same time protects the saddle from being rubbed down by the horse. As the horse tends to sweat under the saddle rug, due to the combination of exercise and the warming insulation provided by the saddle rug, some have built in ‘wicking’ materials to help remove the sweat from the coat.

- Show rugs. A show rug is placed between the saddle and the saddle rug. It is a relatively thin but colourful rug whose main function is look attractive. As it has little or no other practical purpose, it is typically used only during exhibitions or competitions.

- Summer rugs. More commonly known as ’summer sheets’, these are thin sheets intended to keep dirt off of the horse’s coat (e.g. if it rolls or lies down).

- New Zealand rugs. A turnout rug which is made of waxed canvas. It provides limited warmth but protects well from wind and rain (provided that it is re-waxed as required) and is relatively resistant to damage due to the strong canvas material.

- Riding rugs. These provide protection from the weather but are designed to be worn by the horse when it is being ridden.

Of these various types of horse rugs, perhaps the most commonly used is the turnout rug. The most important factor when choosing this type of rug is to select a rug of the appropriate warmth. Keep in mind that a horse which is too hot can be as uncomfortable as one which is too cold. Furthermore, a rug will discourage the growth of the coat and if too warm will actually result in the horse shedding its coat. Consequently, it is important both that the rug is heavy enough to provide necessary warmth but as the same time is not too warm. The warmth which an individual horse requires will depend on various factors:

- Weather. On a cold winter day, one will need a warmer (heavier) turnout rug than on a cool autumn or spring day. If there is wind, additional protection is required due to the wind chill factor. Likewise, if there is heavy rain, the insulation provided by the horse’s coat and by the rug are both reduced, unless they have a rain resistant cover.

- Health and Age. Horses which are young, strong and healthy have less requirement for a warming rug than ones which are not. On a cold day, it may make sense to put a heavy turnout rug on a sick or old horse, when a younger horse in the same field may be fine with a light turnout rug or no rug at all.

- Thickness of coat. A horse with a thick coat will have less need for a rug than one which has a fine coat, or which has been clipped.

- Exhibiting. A horse with a thick coat generally does not look as attractive (in the eyes of most people) as one which has a thinner coat. Consequently, horses being exhibited usually have a rug which is warm enough to discourage growth of their winter coat. Such coats are relatively heavy for the horse’s circumstances, as they need to replace the insulation provided by the natural winter coat rather than merely supplement it. Likewise, summer sheets and show rugs are for the needs of the exhibitor rather than the horse.

- Number of rugs. The above factors will determine the number of rugs required. For example, a young and healthy horse in a mild climate may not require a rug at all and may be happier without one. In a colder climate, a healthy horse may need only a light rug to be used during the coldest days. An elderly or sick horse may need multiple rugs, depending on the situation (e.g. uninsulated waterproof coat for summer rain, lightweight turnout rug for autumn or spring, and a heavy turnout rug for winter).

Once one has decided on the type of rug plus (in the case of warming rugs) the required weight, one can then look at the materials, quality and features which you may require. Some common items and features to consider are:

- Antibacterial. Some rugs are treated to be antibacterial.

- Breathable. Breathable rugs allow sweat to evaporate and air to access the coat, features which make the rug more comfortable and healthier.

- Coverage. Rugs generally cover the body. Some also have neck covers, either as part of the rug or an a detachable extra.

- Friction points. Rugs can rub, especially if worn by active horses or when the horse is working. The main points affected are typically around the shoulders and chest. To prevent this, some rugs have anti-friction fabric at these points to allow the rug to easily slide and move without rubbing the coat.

- Hooks, loops, buckles, straps and attachments. These should be strong, easily opened and closed, and firmly attached.

-Insulation. The amount of insulation is typically expressed in grams per square meter. For example, a ‘300g’ rug has 300 grams of insulation per square meter of rug. The actual rug will weigh more than this, as this is only the weight of the insulation itself and does not include the weight of fabric, straps or buckles. In general, the heavier the weight, the warmer the rug. However, this is not a precise measurement as there are different types of insulation, which vary in terms of quality and effectiveness.

- Rain. A rug may be unsuitable for rain, or be rain resistant, or rain proof.

- Tear Resistant or Rip Stop. Rugs may use fabrics or weaves which are resistant to tearing, and in the event of a tear resist the tear becoming larger.

- Washing. Machine washable rugs are more convenient.

- Wicking. Remove sweat and moisture from the coat.

Once you have decided on the above, your requirements should be well defined in terms of type of rug, amount of warmth required and the various features which you would like. At this point, it is mainly down to quality and price. As in most things, you get what you pay for, so the better quality rugs are correspondingly more expensive. If your budget is limited, or you will only use the rug infrequently, then an inexpensive rug may be appropriate. However, if your horse will be using the rug frequently, it is usually worth investing in a better quality rug which will last. In addition, if your horse is active or frequently rolls, it is important to choose a sturdy rug which can resist this use.

Kids and Horses

Everywhere you look there are horse crazy girls flocking boarding stables and riding schools, eager to take any chance they can to be around the horses. While it is wonderful to see their eager faces around the farm, it is important to consider their safety.

Kids believe that they are invincible and indestructible. It does not matter how old or how young, it is impossible for a youngster to understand the incredible amount of danger there is around a farm.

If you take a good look around the average horse farm, you will be amazed at just how many dangers there are to those who are not aware.

One of the biggest lures for youngsters is heavy equipment. From big tractors to small ATVs, the equipment around the farm is like honey to a bee. Kids will clamber over, under and through the equipment without considering that they could get hurt. If you have a farm that may have kids around, be sure that all equipment is stored with the keys removed, and any dangerous parts covered or put away. A vehicle with keys attached is far too tempting to a little one, and unless the child is old enough to know how to drive, he should not be using the equipment.

Of course, kids are usually there for the horses. Unfortunately, not all horses are as easygoing as we would like to see. While some will stand in the crossties for hours with little girls brushing them, others would just as soon bite or kick the hand that feeds them.

It should be made clear to the kids which horses they are allowed to handle. Small kids, should be encouraged to wear a helmet whenever handling horses. Older kids may be okay on their own without a helmet, but should still be supervised whenever handling the animals.

When riding, there should always be a person on the ground, available to help in case of emergency. No-one should be riding if there is not one person on the property available who is able to drive should a trip to the hospital be necessary. Riders should only be allowed on horses that they know, unless they are supervised by an adult the first few times.

Any horses who are potentially dangerous to kids should be clearly pointed out. You should put signs on their stalls, and try to avoid turning them out with horses that the kids are likely to have to bring in from the fields.

While you would not want to discourage kids from enjoying the horses and having fun around the farm, setting up some rules and safety measures is essential. An ounce of prevention can go a long way.

Remember, even in the safest barns accidents can happen. Put together a plan for managing emergencies, and make sure that all the kids know exactly what to do if something goes wrong.

Never leave kids on the farm without at least one adult nearby for supervision. Discourage parents from randomly dropping their kids off for the day, and be sure to have all emergency numbers on hand.

Kids can be great help around the barn, but they need to be safe.

About Horse Saddles And Horse Blankets

Horse saddles and horse blankets are something people usually associate together when the horse comes to mind. If you plan to ride your horse, you’ll need both. Even if you don’t have to use the horse blanket with the horse saddle, you’ll still want a horse blanket for other times. You’ll want one when your horse is kept in a drafty stall, when your horse is waiting out in the cold weather for a show, when your horse is waiting in a holding pen for vet’s attention and it is cold outside.
When you think of buying a new horse saddle, consider the trial period in case you’ll want to return it for a better fit. Surely you didn’t think it would be as easy as just buying a universal saddle fit for any horse or rider?

No, my unsuspecting horse friend, it is, unfortunately more involved than that. Oh, but the journey for the proper saddle and blanket is well worth the efforts both for you and your equine partner. Buying a horse saddle that doesn’t fit the horse, rider, or the occasion will only cause regrets and soreness that could be avoided by a thoughtful purchase. Ask any horse enthusiast and you’ll find that buying the proper gear is a welcome investment!

You’ll want to consider what type of riding you’ll do. Saddles are basically wood or fiberglass in frame that is covered with leather. Although, you’ll find technical advances have allowed for the more modern synthetic material in lieu of the leather covering. Regardless of what your saddle is constructed of, the quality and purpose and fit are most important. You’ll want your money’s worth.

There are several different choices to make before purchasing a blanket as well. You must have a blanket under a western saddle for the horse and rider to be comfortable during the ride. Blankets are made for performance, for miniature horses, and for show. Although the Navajo horse blanket is a popular choice is the western style is a consideration, there are others available. There are quilted blankets, foal blankets, antisweat sheets, and cooling blankets.

For your added comfort, there are softee seats, suede seats, and even shock absorbers, which might be welcomed after a lengthy time away from riding because of medical reasons. Whatever type of horse saddle or horse blanket you’ll require be certain both will best benefit you and your horse.

The saddle must fit not only the size of the horse, but the size and shape of the rider as well. A poor fit can cause sure muscles, blisters, and bruising for you both. Not only should you consider this for yourself, but for children riders. The child will continue to grow, but the saddle should fit them at their current size.

Saddles used for other than pleasure riding include those bought for endurance, show, roping, barrel races, and ponies. There are many different brands of all these types of saddles. It’s a matter of choice, price, and availability. Happy hunting!

Best saddle rack for an english saddle?

Anyone have any opinions on what kind of rack is best for keeping english saddles on, or does it even really matter? I would think it would be best to support the panels evenly.

Now that I’ve finally finished building my tack/feed room, I’d like to put up some racks and stop using the sawhorse covered in blankets I’ve been using. I want racks that hang from the wall and you can hang one below another one (so don’t recommend those fake horse torsos like at the tack shop). I also don’t want to spend a crazy amount of money on racks and would be able/willing to build some.

We just use the Standard Saddle Rack shown on this web page. http://www.doversaddlery.com/category.asp_Q_c=173&c2c=ln&ipp=3200

They mount right to the wall and they seem to work fine. We keep saddle pads underneath them to help prevent dents in the pannels, and I have yet to see any damage to any of our saddles. They’re pretty inexpensive too!

Dogs and Cats Love Life. Make it Amazing With Reiki

I know how much animals love their Reiki sessions.

It doesn’t matter what sort of pet you have,

horse, dog, cat, snake, hamster or even a mouse, Reiki will help to keep them healthy, and recover from any illness they may encounter.

I would like to talk about our special friends; the animals and pets we all love. It doesn’t matter what pet you have, Dog, Cat, Horse or Snake. Reiki will work for them.

Those skeptical about complementary medicine will usually attribute any beneficial effect to the placebo response. “If I believe strongly enough that Reiki (or whatever) will make me better” then the likelihood is that better you will be!

But the same argument cannot apply to animals that can have no expectations one way or another about whether a particular treatment will work, and so, the placebo response cannot apply. Hence, where alternative or complementary remedies do work – the effect must be genuine. I have seen dogs, cats and bigger animals relax and improve when treated with Reiki: Your pet will respond wonderfully to any Reiki treatments. I love to work with the animals and pets of my friends and family. If you have pets of any kind they will love their treatments.

I know some veterinary surgeries do have complimentary healing practitioners on their books. And like doctors, the Vets are starting to realise that Reiki can help their patients too.

All animals benefit from Energy Healing, and of course that is exactly what Reiki is. Reiki is an extraordinary healing force. Reiki flows through the Reiki practitioner to your pet and they become extremely relaxed and sleepy. Reiki healing energy focuses on the Reiki healing life power. The wholesome energy contained in our bodies. By means of the channeling force from us to the recipient, the distressed areas undergo revitalization. This revitalisation is nothing else but ‘Life Force’

The entire beneficial amount of positive thinking and feelings, conveyed to the recipient (your beloved pet) translates into light. This Reiki healing light adds to the life flow energy. It helps with all manner of illness and upsets your pet may encounter. It will help to calm them and ensure they will get any help that is available from the Reiki healing force.

One of the supreme rewards of a Reiki alternative treatment (for you and your pet) is in the significant decrease of stress. You know when your pet is suffering stress or upset, especially if they have had to have surgery, or other treatments that mean a visit to the vets. Recovery from surgery can be quite surprising, especially when the treatments begins some weeks prior to the scheduled operation. Then you carry on the Reiki after their treatment and it all comes together to help and improve after-affects and recovery time. We know that Reiki is a particular type of delicate energy transfer. In the healing process, the Reiki therapist lays her hands on or above your beloved pet or animal that is being treated. And it goes to them through the healing light. In this way, a relationship takes place between the patient and an immeasurable spring of life energy. This sort of force is an exceptionally potent one, yet is incredibly kind and soothing.

If you would like to help the worlds animals, (and in some countries they badly need lots of help) including UK. and USA. I’m afraid. In your minds eye see the animals who you would like to send healing and love too, and see it going to them as a stream of light. The endangered sea-life need all the help they can get too. Not many of us are blessed to give hands-on-healing to Whales and Dolphins, but we can send love and Reiki to to them. We just have to think about a pod of Whales or Dolphins swimming with joy in our oceans, and send them our loving and healing thoughts.

You might be one of those lucky people who live where you can see the pods swimming, how wonderful for you. As you watch them at play, send love and light to them, and you may be very surprised at their joyful reaction. Reiki is a secure and preferable manner of coping with a variety of complications. It in no way would upset your pet. There are absolutely no contraindications with Reiki for human patients or animals. Reiki relaxes your body and mind. so whatever pet you have they will feel wonderful. Evan very small animals can accept Reiki, your little mouse or hamster will benifit from a little hands-on healing.

Greater participation Przewalski horse book?

No one remembered the title of this book for older children "In the book, a girl goes a long ride on his horse and found a strange horse naked high in the mountains. She takes the horse to his farm. Shortly after, a strange horse diseases begins to spread in the region and all the horses except the nude (called a rack) is sick. The mother of the girl, who is a veterinarian, decides to treat an antidote to the rack of blood, which is apparently immune. She begins to believe he could be a Przewalski horse, and back to the mountain, but goes further than before, and discover a whole herd of Przewalski horses. (Yes, a bit incredible.) It is strange that I remember that, but not the title.

Sit Back, Relax, Enjoy And Win A Horse Race Spectator Game

Contrary to the common belief, gambling did not start in the US. A vast majority of today’s most popular gambling games have originated in different places around the world. The roots of gambling can be traced down to the Chinese culture. Keno, one of the oldest Chinese lottery games is now played by millions of people all over the world. Other interesting games that have a universal appeal include games like Pai Gow, Craps, Roulette and Blackjack to name just a few.

Besides these, there are various other spectator sports like equestrian sports and Jai Alai that involve a great deal of gambling. An equestrian sport such as thorough bred horse racing is a fine example of this. Although this game was developed during the seventies in England, it gained popularity in the US much later. Online gambling is the latest addition in the long list of gambling games. Horse race spectator games are not only a great source of recreation but also good way to learn more about horse racing games.

Horse race spectator games are simple and fun to play. The player merely needs to select a horse of his choice and then sit back and enjoy, watching the race. It is a grand game on horse racing that you can not only play with your friends but also enjoy with your family. Horse fans can also play a race featuring various champions belonging to different time periods.

The game also offers the player numerous advantages such as choosing conditions as well as the best quality of 3D graphics. Besides this, players also get a chance to examine photo finishes, view instant replays and save their favorite virtual horse races. In short, virtual horse video games like horse race spectator game help to make the right choices and manage financial resources efficiently.

how can I obtain old horse racing videos?

I recently purchase a winning OTTB named Utah Sky. won 6 or 7 times in his career and is registered with the Jockey club, I’d absolutely love to see videos of him racing or old racing pictures, and I’ve tried looking everywhere with no success on finding this sort of thing. Anyone know of a place I can find this stuff? I’m sure there’s gotta be something out there.
Thanks!

Ok i got the best website to check out videos of your horse, “Utah Sky”. But the only problem is that it doesn’t show the results, such as, how much the horse paid to win, winning time, exc. The website is, http://calracing.com/signup.php, when you get there put all your information and when your done verifying everything click where it says “Horse” and put the name of your horse, Utah Sky and you can watch free race replays. By the way sometimes the videos can be slow depending on your internet connection.
