These foals get a really good start

Probably one of the most often asked questions of my Parelli career was: “what can we do with our foal”. In principle you can accomplish very much with very little. Everything you do with your foal will have an influence on the rest of his life. Often the advice is to do nothing with them or as little as possible, but that is impossible. For as soon as they interact with humans, they are learning something (good or bad). Every approach, touch and also the reaction of the mares to humans, the foal will interpret and learn. Foals are ‘full faculty learners’ from birth. This means they have to be able to do many things within hours after birth. See, hear, get up, walk and run from danger. Us humans and many other mammals are helpless and blind.

This was an introduction to the answer to the question: “what can we do with our foal”. Usually the people did not find my answer very satisfying, because it already takes a lot of knowledge, timing and experience to do it right the first time. When learning to paint, you don’t start with the most expensive canvas, expensive brushes and indelible paint. A foal is like a blank canvas and it would be ideal if you already knew exactly what the desired result of your actions would be.

From the very first moment back in 1997 when I first saw a small picture of Parelli Natural Horsemanship in a magazine in Australia, I have always been very enthusiastic about Pat & Linda’s program. I could not have learned the deep understanding of a horse anywhere else as effectively. By seeing the footage underneath, I remember again why. These foals are given such great experiences, mainly because of the great relationship and communication these mares have with humans.

I hope the video on my blog will inspire you and that you will share it with many others. Enjoy! I sincerely hope this will be the future image of the horse world.

About the Author

From the year 2001 until the end of 2009 I was a Parelli Natural Horsemanship professional. In 2010 I decided to teak a break from teaching courses and lessons. I still love the Parelli program very much and hope many people will join in the future. So how could I still help? I know many people had trouble loading or travelling with their horse in a trailer, so …

I decided to become an ambassador for safe and comfortable trailer loading and transporting of horses.

I plan to do this by offering all I know about trailer loading to ensure safe and comfortable loading and transport for both horse and human. And…. by promoting horse trailers with slant loading, since this is the most comfortable way for horses to travel.

In those eight years I have loaded many horses and have also transported some of them on commission. With several of my personal horses I kept on challenging and improving my trailer loading abilities and have travelled extensively through Europe with them.

Can i do natural horsemanship and ride Hunter jump at the same time?

ok so heres my plan:

I have been on and off with english(this includes dressage, saddle seat, and hunterjump) and natural horsemanship (parelli, but soon to start riding clinton).

I luv to jump! and want to start doing cross country once i find a barn that does it. But i also love doing natural stuff. if i find a natural trainer do u think i could also jump?

Or how would u handle the situation?

Yes you can do both, but why are you starting Clinton Anderson instead? Clinton discourages natural horsemanship for the type of riding you are looking to get into, however Parelli encourages it. Walter Zettle, world renowned dressage master, recommends natural horsemanship (Parelli) as the best foundation for ANY type of riding. In this month’s (May) issue of Dressage today he writes about it. Even Lauren Barwick competed in China in the paralympics and won both gold and silver medals.

Anyhow, after going through the training schedule for getting him back in shape ( http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AskYog.mDU_Z1MzAasjMXbGQ.Rd.;_ylv=3?qid=20090607115310AA2HBwZ )
I was curious if Trail rides would be harmful to him, since he is pretty fat. For those who dont know, he is too fat for a saddle, so all riding must be done bareback. There will be little to no trotting, no cantering, just walking.
is not a follow the leader sort of trail ride, just going out with friends. No real rules, includes a few steep hills.

Nope. It’d be a good workout for him. You could also start by just leading him on the trails while you ride the other horse. But you could definitely ride him, especially if you started just at a walk.

The English Horse Racing Classics – A Quick Guide

There is often much confusion as to what exactly are English Classic races and what are simply Group One races. The first aspect to remember is that there are five English Classic races and they are all carry Group One status, but due to the history of these races they carry a much higher prestige and status in the Racing world. The second point is that they are only open to three year old thoroughbred horses. The Five Classics are:

2000 Guineas

This is the opening Classic of the season and it is open to three year old colts and fillies. It is raced over the famous Rowley Mile at Newmarket and is a big test of speed, stamina and courage over an undulating straight course. Although it is open to fillies they very rarely run, they are normally entered for the 1000 Guineas (See below). For the colts it is also the first leg of the triple-crown; which is made up from the 2000 Guineas, the Epsom Derby and the St Leger. This year the race will be run on 2nd May, which is the opening day of the Guineas Festival.

1000 Guineas

The second Classic of the season, which is open to 3 year old thoroughbred fillies only and is also raced over Newmarket’s Rowley Mile. The race also forms the first leg of the Fillies triple-crown, which can be completed by winning this race, the Epsom Oaks and the St Leger. It is raced on the second day of the Guineas Festival, which this year will be 3rd May.

The Epsom Oaks

The third Classic is the Epsom Oaks, which like the 1000 Guineas is only open to 3 year old fillies. However this is raced on the Epsom Downs race course over a distance of 1 mile 4 furlongs in length. The Oaks forms the second leg of the Fillies Triple Crown and is one of the most valuable fillies only races in the world. This year it will be run on June 4th.

The Epsom Derby

The Derby is probably the most famous and prestigious race of the five English Classics and is renowned the World over. Although it is open to fillies as well as colts, it is rare for them to be entered, with the Fillies usually opting for the Epsom Oaks. Like the Oaks, it is run at Epsom Downs race course over a 1 mile 4 furlongs and forms the second leg of the colts triple crown. The race will take place this year on June 5th.

St Leger

The fifth and final Classic race of the season is the St Leger which is open to three year old colts and fillies and is raced at Doncaster race course over the longer distance of 1 mile 6 furlongs. It is a big test of stamina and often its winners stay in training for the following year. In some respects the St Leger has lost some of its importance, due mainly to its distance. The last colt to have won the Triple Crown was the great Nijinsky in 1970 and the last filly to have won the fillies version was Oh So Sharp in 1985. The St Leger takes place on 12th September.

The importance and prestige of the five classic races is underpinned by not only the prize money available to the winner of each races, all of which are well in to six figures (the prize money available for the Epsom Derby is £1.25 million) but also by the potential breeding values of the winning horses. Any horse that wins any of the classics will automatically increase in value at stud in the hope that they pass their winning genes on to future progeny.

Defining Christianity and Christ Call

This is sad, very sad: The ‘church’ has become unimaginably too worldly today; and the world has become unthinkably too churchy today. The ‘church’ has given the world mere religion as against Christianity. The ‘church’ and the world today are become like one stream flowing with same source and apparently heading the same way. Few men and women, however, cannot be blinded to the fact that true Christianity (The Church) is a stream with a different source, different path and heading different way from that of the world. The church (now, the real church, that is) never meets with the world. Yes, it is in the world but not of it. It is in the world as light to drive away its thick darkness and not to borrow it. It is in the world to point captives of its darkness to the Bright and Morning Star and not to embrace the darkness and its depth, which is hell. DEFINING CHRISTIANITY AGAIN
It was C. T. Studd (1862-1931) the famous England cricketer (and of the Cambridge Seven fame) and who later founded World Evangelism Crusade (WEC) International with missions in America, Asia and Africa who once wrote, and very instructively too: “Christ’s call was not to ‘scoffers’, but sinners to repentance… to raise living churches of souls among the destitute, to capture men from the Devil’s clutches and snatch them from the very jaws of hell, to enlist and train them for Jesus, and make them an almighty army of God. But this can only be accomplished by red-hot, unconventional, unfettered Holy Spirit religion … and by reckless sacrifice and heroism in the foremost trenches”. O that every pastor could take the first part of our quote as his functional definition of Christianity in our day; and the second part as the solution-way, or the way out! THE SURE FOUNDATION
I believe in the faith of our fathers. I believe in the old landmarks. I believe in the foundation laid by the apostles of our glorious Saviour and Lord. I have Peter, John, Paul, James, Barnabas et al in mind. I believe in the New Testament Church. The Saviour and Lord of all, even the Man Jesus said: “And why call ye Me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? Whosoever cometh to Me, and heareth My sayings, and doeth them I will shew you to whom he is like: He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great” (Luke 6: 46-49). It seems to me that one wind of the weakest persecution could make much of what we today parade as Christianity especially in the southern part of Nigeria (and which is essentially ‘American Christianity’) go under. For: “If thou hast run with the footmen, and they have wearied thee, then how canst thou contend with horses? And if in the land of peace, wherein thou trustedst, they wearied thee, then how wilt thou do in the swelling of Jordan” (Jeremiah 12: 15)? Paul wrote with a serious note of command: “According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise master-builder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. BUT LET EVERY MAN TAKE HEED HOW HE BUILDETH THEREUPON” (1 Corinthians 3: 10). Good Christians over the years have taken that holy command seriously. And indeed, The New Testament Church has always been the standard of Christianity. That is the foundation, the tradition and pattern. That is The Gospel. We alter that standard to our destruction; we lay another foundation to our peril; we preach another gospel to our damnation and we canvass and promote another pattern to the confusion of our faces. All these human traditions from Rome and America that have entrenched themselves here and there must be seriously questioned in the light of scriptures and uprooted as the Pages of Hope and Life (The Holy Bible) demands. And we have examples in the faithful before us. YESTERDAY’S GODLY BUILDERS
Christianity has come of age; it did not start with Nigerians, and not even with the Americans! AND CERTAINLY, TOO, NOT IN ROME! Over the years whether with the Apostolic Fathers, The Reformers, Mennonites, Puritans, Quakers, early Methodists, early Pentecostals or other serious minded groups, very serious holy attempts were made to approximate the hallowed pages of The Book of Life where it all started. Those people operated on the very sure foundation and were able to lighten-up and brighten the world around them; and salt and put taste to their earth. The world around them indeed saw a chosen generation, a holy nation, a royal priesthood and a peculiar people. The world saw very clearly a baffling difference between them and them: for some it was an irresistible and very inviting difference and for others a threatening difference. The result was that it was either they became genuinely converted and added to the Church Spiritual (Church of the Firstborn) or they were all out persecuting the faithful, many unto death. That was true Christianity! The modern church-world common stream does not do that. The Apostolic Fathers most of whom had direct contact and good acquaintance with the first apostles of Our Lord never ‘detoured’ from the vision of the foundation and of the required materials needed to build thereupon. Yes, I believe in the building blocks of the likes of Ignatius of Antioch (c.35-107), Polycarp of Smyrna (c.69-c.155) and Polycarp’s disciple: Irenaeus of Lyon (c.140-202). These and other faithful of their days tried to lay on this foundation with fear and trembling even when martyrdom looms. Incidentally, all three: Ignatius, Polycarp and Irenaeus were martyred. Very many too escaped death by martyrdom. Whichever way; they all died the death of the righteous. The Church of the Apostolic Fathers knew the definition of Christianity and Christ call. I believe also in the building blocks John Wycliffe (1330-1384), Thomas a Kempis, real name: Thomas Hemerken (1379-1471), Martin Luther (1483-1546), Huldreich Zwingli (1484 – 1531), Menno Simon (1496 – 1561), John Calvin (1509-1564), John Knox (1513-1572), Richard Baxter (1615-1691), George Fox (1624-1691), John Bunyan (1628-1688), John Wesley (1703-1791) George Whitefield (1714-1770) et al tried hazardously to erect on that foundation in their respectively days. And I believe in the serious reverence and attention people like Charles G. Finney, Dwight L. Moody, John Ryle, William and Catherine Booth, Matthew Henry, Watchman Nee, Finis Dake, Kathryn Kuhlman, Oswald J. Smith et al accorded and gave both foundation and structure. We thank our God for Billy Graham as well as the John Haggis, and our own William F. Kumuyis, Gbile Akannis et al that are still with us today. The lives and exploits of these faithful over the years which I believe approximates scriptures should represent the compass we seriously need in our day and not some mundane, flesh-inspired, pride-spurred, titles-saturated (like their equivalents in the world), demon-exalting, emotion-driven, or mammon-promoting life and ministry we present as Christianity today. The Scriptures and the lives and ministries of holy, consecrated, self-denying and fruitful men of God should be our only definition of Christianity and ready compass we need as time draws to a close and the Risen and Glorious Lord comes rewarding everyman according to his works. We are in the age where we need, more than any other age, men and ministers who can say in truth and in spirit like Paul: “Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11: 1). Believers indeed, must henceforth follow, just as of old, after men who have apprehended that for which also they are apprehended of Christ Jesus; and men who are pressing toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3: 12, 14). That is what we need now for ministers of the Gospel! For: a church that thinks it is called to butter, milk, honey and mirth is not properly informed about hell. Igho writes from Warri

Training horses-When I round pen my horse-John Lyon’s method…?

Hi, I am training 2 ~5 year old Haflingers and have come across a problem I’ve never seen before! While round-penning one, asking him to go to the right, and then the left consistantly, he does well..Then when I ask him to do an inside turn, following John Lyon’s method, he will stop with his head facing the fence, and move his head (looking at his tail) back and forth really fast….I tried to ask John Lyon’s over the internet but to no avail..I talked to Perelli about it and they said it’s a sign of confusion…So, I have consistantly going over the right and lefts, and it’s seems to not be happening as much in the beginning of the work-out as it does when he is into it approx. 15 min. I always end the lesson after he’s done the inside turn well a few times and so we are making progress…The other horses I’ve done this with have caught on quicker and have never shown signs like this..Is it anxiety? Have you ever had this happen to you? Any info. I would appreciate…!

I have seen a horse do that once. Where they just seem to be terrified to move either direction. I would take a look at where you are positioned. As you know with the Lyon method, you are always in a position to push the horse. If it feels comfortable doing inside turns, but not so good doing outside turns, you should take a look at your positioning in the pen. It might be worried about where you are standing. If it makes the turn, are you still in the correct position to push. The time that I saw the horse do that move, the person doing the lesson was asking the horse to make the turn while she was not in a transition position and the horse refused to turn. I had her move to the side towards the initiation of the turn and the horse complied immediately.

You might want a full lesson on outside turns only. Let them be slow and deliberate, specially from both sides as sight might be a problem also.

Horse Training Through Professionals

We all love our pets be it a cat, dog, rabbit or a horse. No matter what size they are we want to indulge in gullible activities with them. We train them, show them little tricks that they can perform, feed them and in the process make them our best friend. But most of the times it so happens that it becomes a one sided game; it is either they performing or us. We always look for an activity that we can perform together. Though there are a lucky few like the ones who have horses as they get to spend quality time with them. They normally join a horse training class or take up riding lessons then what the rest of the life is like a vacation.

Imagine what fun it would be if you could spend a considerable time of the day at horse training class with your horse, taking riding lessons. Then one could also participate in horse race or enjoy a game of polo. But in our fun have we ever realized that how does our horse feel when put into their horse shoe and are made to run even when they don’t want to. One must be very careful when they walk into a horse training school as most of the times it so happens that the trainer becomes a little cruel on these innocent animals. Sometimes it so happens that the horse is even drugged to perform. Therefore one must first find out all about the institute and then enroll oneself. So that it remains a healthy ride for both the trainee and the horse.

Just like there are cruel methods of training horses similarly there are institutes that train in more gentle and humane method. It is always advised to hire a professional for the job because a professional horse trainer is educated in horsemanship, horse behavior, language and specific skills like reining, cutting and jumping to name a few. The following are some of the basic techniques that need to be followed which are also helpful for the riders to handle.

• A basic knowledge on horse behavior is always helpful on the part of the rider.

• Because of the large size of the horses it becomes important on the part of the trainer to train the horse about the behaviors that will not injure people.

• Since in between the trainer and the horse, the trainer is the evolved specie, therefore it is the responsibility of the trainer to understand the horse psychology and train the horse of the goals that it is to achieve.

• Horse as pray animal’s needs to be trained with instincts that make them trust their trainers and react less just on their instincts.

There are many horse training sites available that provide detailed information and articles on riding lessons. The information available on these sites can help you to better understand as to how your horse is being trained and if they are being trained well. Such articles also help you to understand your horse better and develop a better bond with your pet friend.

Riding my horse bareback?

So I have a kind of nervous horse. I’d really like to be able to ride her bareback, but she is pretty nervous and I don’t think I’d be able to just hop on with no saddle (I’m definitely only going to ride her bareback with my trainer.) Does anyone know how I can get her used to bareback riding? Is there a training technique? Any tips are greatly appreciated!!!!

Thanks = )
yea she’s a TB…and she’s abnormally nervous because of some accident she was in before I got her…

Well, don’t do any fancy mount or anything (no brainer) but just start out sitting on her, if she is uneasy, don’t sit on her to long, but just mount, dismount and remount tons of times until she is comfortable with you on her back without a saddle.
Then, start with a walk, and do the same thing, mount, dismount and mount again-then ask her to walk foreward a couple of paces before you get off, then work your way up to higher gaits and do the same thing.

A Really Powerful Punch Technique From Korean Karate!

This Korean Karate trick is one of the simplest and most deadly moves you will ever find. As simple as it is, it requires exquisite timing, and a number of little bits and pieces of which I am about to tell you. Understanding these fine points, and working on the thing a bit, and you are going to have one of the most powerful punches in your martial arts arsenal.

I discovered this trick in the form which is sometimes called Heian Five, it happens right after you execute a crescent kick and low block. You are now standing in a horse stance, and you swing the right arm across the body to cover the left side of the body with a palm block. You then perform a left fist to the left, and that is what I have labeled the power punch.

You can do this move right out of the form, and it will work with plenty of power. But there are ways to tweak it to make even more power, and to make it even more workable. And we want more workable, because we want to understand this technique so well that we can use it on the street.

Have your partner stand in front of you, handshake apart. Have him step forward with his right leg and punch to your face with his right hand. You step back with your left foot into a back stance as you do a palm block with your left hand, this causes your partner’s right hand to pass in front of you, and this sets up his body for the counterpunch.

To do the counterpunch, turn your body and feet into a horse stance as you extend your right fist to his ribcage. Now, this has got to be done quick and sharp, and you have to drop your weight and pop those hips, and you are going to find that this technique, if executed correctly, is going to smash his ribs to smithereens. In addition, if you happen to use a little precision, you can stick your fingers directly into his armpit.

The thing is that you must have perfect CBM, Coordinated Body Motion. This means that all body parts move at the same time and in harmony. Thus, you strike with a couple of hundred pounds of mass (assuming you weigh a couple of hundred pounds), and not twenty pounds of arm.

In addition, you must set the stance at the exact and correct distance so that your arm is nearly straightened out, only has a couple of inches to extend, when you make contact. If you decide to use the fingers, go slower, and add fingertip push ups to your work outs. If you decide to go deep, you can set your legs so that your punched out arm can sweep him over your horse.

I always found this to be a wonderful move, quick and easy, and I love the feeling of moving in quick and light and then dropped the deep power into the last oomph of the punch. The damage to that mugger is going to be considerable, and the move is very usable on the street, and can be adjusted as one needs. The official label for this move, in my system, which is a slight modification of Korean Karate, is The Power Punch, hope you enjoy it.

Who is a Clinton Anderson fan?

I learned the jist of his training methods but I really want to see the training DVD personally and I was thinking of buying one of his DVDs. The thing is, I don’t know which one to buy….

My horse’s biggest problem are his ground manners and understanding who’s the boss. I do have help with my one trainer but my horse respects HIM not ME. I’d like to get firsthand knowledge and learn for myself seeing the actual pro do it himself and see if I can learn better that way…

I’ve been researching the DVDs online and a few of them sound really good but I don’t know which one to get! Does anyone have any experience with him and the training?

There are a few things he does that I agree with. Most of what he does is similar to my way of training. I can take a little of my way and toss in a little of his to get the desired result.
There are a few things I don’t like so don’t bother with them. For the most part though I enjoy watching him.

Respect and manners on the ground is first and foremost.
If you are looking for one of his DVDs on this:

I have bookmarked a list of other trainers that are the Natural Horsemanship similar to Clinton if you want them. Ground Training though is where you want to start…respect on the ground

Yoga, Meditation And Western Horseback Riding

Meditation and Relaxation Add to Western Horseback Riding

New riders are often drawn to western horseback riding for the reason that it appears less rigorous than other riding disciplines. The fact is nothing could be further from the truth. Although western styled riding is more laid back in general it requires every bit as much attention and skill even when compared to the skill of dressage. Controlling a 1200 pound animal is no uncomplicated feat regardless of how competently taught and the unique communication between animal and man based on mutual respect is as essential in western horseback riding as it is in any other style.

As rigorous as western horseback riding is there is some reason for the belief it is relaxed. Though it takes knack there is a mental and physical relaxation involved in western horseback riding that is as much a part of the skill as it is part of the satisfaction. Using relaxation to broaden western riding abilities has become a key to excelling in the competitive world of western style riding events.

Locating Your Core

Just as in meditation and relaxation techniques finding your center is crucial in western horseback riding. Employing many of the same methods used by yoga and meditation experts can help you relax into your seat. In western horseback riding the seat even more than in all other riding disciplines is a major communication center. Sitting deep and comfortably will ensure a direct line of communication. Relaxed reins offer less continuous contact with the mouth and being able to use legs and seat to transform desires helps develop a pivotal relationship between horse and rider.

Getting a Leg Up

With all of the benefits of western horseback riding it is very well suited to helping disabled children and adults alike enjoy the inherent communication between horse and man. The benefits extend even further in that the muscles used to sit a horse are naturally engaged and steadiness is improved along with mental stillness. There have been numerous cases where therapeutic horseback riding has helped bring autistic children out of their shells even for short moments, given physically disabled children and adults more dexterity and confidence, and made important strides in the mental well-being of psychologically distressed individuals.

Past Connecting the Yet to come

While it is less historically known in Europe western horseback riding has a root deep into the western past of America. Those roots connect to the current era of competition, trail riding, open country, combination training, and even most recently Olympic riding endeavors. The future of western horseback riding is ensured by its value in stock control, exciting rodeo events, challenging gaming events, as much as in the relaxing mental setting it provides.

I have two questions, Whats the difference between Western and English Horseback riding?

Im looking into taking horseback riding lessons one place offers both English and Western Style, the other place, that looks more interesting, only offers English style, thats why Im interested in the difference. Also I couldn’t fit this into the question area, What is dressage and what is Hunt seat? I looked them both up online, but I dont understand too much of horseback riding information, so I don’t quite understand what both are and the difference for that as well. Thanks in advance for helping.

There are many differences between english and western riding styles, the most obvious being the difference in tack. Tack, which encompases the sadddle and bridle, as well as any other “gear” the horse might wear, differs signifigantly between western and english. If you were to ride western, you would use a western saddle, which has a horn (the thing in the front of the saddle that sticks up), and a much deeper wider seat. On the other hand, if you were to ride english, you would use an english saddle, which has no horn, and flatter, shallower seat. Western riders are often western pleasure riders (which is a different riding style within western, like barrel racing or pole bending) which calls for the horse to have a very lopey sittable gait and carry their head very low. The rider is suppposed to make the ride look relaxed, controlled, and give the illusion of easyness. English style, which i ride, is more of a formal, riding style that calls for controll, and obedience. Technically, english riding can be more detail oriented, and there are more technical things that the rider must know, such as controll and use of their legs, seat, and hands. However, just like western, “english” only names the discipline one rides and not the type ie. hunter, jumper, eventer, or equitation. As for your other question, dresage is another style of english riding that takes the technicality of riding even higer, and requires its participants to be able to complete complex manuvers on the flat. Hunt seat applies to english riding also, and is the way that the rider uses her seat, hands, and legs together often while jumping over obstacles. It was meant to mimic the style of riding that fox hunters displayed. I appoligize for the lenghty explanation, but i hope it helps

Although it blithely rewrites the history of a legendary race horse, The Story of Seabiscuit is still an appealing example of Technicolor entertainment from Hollywood’s studio system.
Effectively Marketing Your Sale Horse

Effectively Marketing Your Sale Horse

By Donna Sabatine

Copyright © 2010

In today’s market there is a lot to be considered when placing your horse for sale. Of course, we all want to get a good price for our sale horses and typically we want them to find the best home possible. Both of these concerns can be a real challenge when faced with the plethora of low priced or sometimes, free horses available today.

The challenge of course, is to make your horse more desirable than all of the other sale horses out there. How do we do that you ask? Well, by presenting the horse so that he stands out in the crowd, and presenting the seller as someone prepared, honest, and as someone who potential buyers feel comfortable doing business.

Text Based Classified Ads vs. Picture Ads

By far the cheapest way to advertise your horse is with a simple text ad on any number of free classified sites. These sites usually allow you a certain number of words to describe your horse and are pretty user friendly. You supply things like age, sex, breed, training and sometimes pedigree and it formats an ad to be published on the site. The problem with text only ads is that they are dependent on what you write as a description for your horse. The potential buyer has to get a picture in their mind based on how you describe your animal. Write a description to spark interest in your horse by being descriptive, honest about quality..

One other thing to be careful of with text based ads is spelling and grammar. Yes, I know… really? Keep in mind that you are trying to generate credibility with a buyer, and misspelling words like “conformation” for example, is going to get you the wrong kind of attention. Abbreviations that are sometime seen like “¼ horse” are extremely distracting and lead to much guessing, “what is the other ¾ ?” Also, while it is generally ok to abbreviate breed associations like AQHA but if there is any doubt, spell it out as some acronyms could mean several different things. Again, be sure the association name is spelled out properly and without spelling errors. Google is your friend and is full of useful information on correct spellings for words.

Picture ads are also offered several places in print format as well as on the web. These ads allow you to add a picture, or a series of pictures for a small price. These can be used to highlight your horses training, disposition, good looks and attractiveness to a buyer. Pictures should include a clean horse that is well groomed and conditioned, with appropriate tack for their discipline and not show a horse grazing in a field, unless of course you are selling a pasture ornament. Tack included in the picture should be clean and fit the horse well, the rider should be dressed appropriately and while this doesn’t mean they should be in show attire, it definitely would not hurt if you are marketing a show horse.

How the rider or handler is dressed is very important as well. Simple things like riders in shorts, flip flops and tank tops, while fun to wear on trail rides and swim in the lake, are not the best impression to make on would be buyers, Helmets are a personal choice, but if a junior rider is featured in the photograph then it is generally a better idea to include a helmet as again, impressions are made with this moment in time. I doubt you will find anyone to say they were ever turned off by a rider wearing a helmet on a horse, but you will definitely find those buyers that relate it to seller responsibility and make an impression based on it.

The background in pictures also gives buyers an impression of the type of environment where the horse is kept. Clutter and trash in the background of a picture is distracting and takes the focus of the picture off of the horse. Keep in mind that the buyer is making an impression of the horse and facilities from a picture and forming an opinion based on that picture. First impressions being what they are, your facilities and maintenance habits are reflected by the giant manure pile in the background, or the clutter of garbage left over from stable cleanup day the weekend before. Things like this we don’t think of as owners because we are familiar with it, but to a potential buyer it’s a forecast of the type of care the horse has received over the last few years with the now seller.

A background with a fence line works well generally in riding pictures, but be careful of the errant fence post giving your horse a “5th leg” appearance, or a fence line that needs repair. A tree line, open field or even in a paddock so long as the background is not cluttered and distracting, will go a long ways towards making your horse the star of the photo and draw interested buyers.

Video Footage

Today it is easier than ever to get good video footage of horses for sale. Small, hand held video cameras, digital cameras, even some cell phones take passable video footage that can be transferred onto a computer and edited. The same rules for photographs holds true for video and a clean horse, well fitting, clean tack and a nicely dressed rider are important.

Peruse any video on any of the popular video sites on the web and you will see dark, distorted, wobbly videos sometimes with voices in the background or a video maker that walks with the camera for better positions. Please edit these out in your sale video. It is preferable to use a tripod for your camera or a very steady hand to get steady video footage. Edit it ruthlessly so that your horse is presented at his very best.

More and more people are asking to see not only riding or showing video, but ground manners, views of legs and feet and a clear shot of the horse walking and trotting to and from the camera. These are not required of course, but are a nice touch that shows you have nothing to hide with your horse and are proud of how well he’s been handled and the care he’s been given. A descriptive title, appropriate music and ending on the video is always a nice tough and gives your video that air of professionalism that again, speaks of your credibility as a seller.

If you are advertising on a site that does not allow video uploads, be sure to include in your text description that video is available! A quick upload ahead of time to an online video hosting site such as YouTube will allow you to include the video footage in your ad, but be prepared to have it in DVD format so it can be mailed to those that cannot view these sites due to slow internet service or older computers.

The Horse Itself

The star of the show, so to speak, should be freshly bathed with their manes and tails groomed and clean. Decisions like braiding for a hunter, banding for a stock breed or leaving a long, full mane loose is entirely based on what discipline or niche you are marketing your horse. Feet should be neatly done and while it’s not important to have them shod, it will present a more finished image if they are at least even and not due a trim. Clipping is another decision like braiding, that really depends on the individual horse. It is not always necessary to do a show clip, but if you are marketing a show horse it gives a more polished appearance.

Condition of the horse itself is important as well. Make sure they are fit and conditioned, with a shiny coat and good weight. Presenting a horse with a rough coat and that is underweight is not going to win you any admirers in the buyer market. It might earn interest, but probably not the kind of interest you want to attract. Also, it is always a better idea to take sale pictures during the months when the horse looks their best with a shorter coat. As the circumstances do not always lend themselves to spring or summer photos, and during the winter months it is not always feasible to do a body clip, the horses coat should at least be shiny and well groomed.

Honest Evaluations of Your Sale Horse

Let’s talk for a moment about pricing your horse for sale. In today’s economy it is truly a buyer’s market with horses being sold far below their original purchase price due to job loss, family struggles and the need to downsize entire herds sometimes. Good, solid show horses and trail horses still have a fairly good market, but it is important that you don’t price yourself out of this market by over inflating your horses true worth. Searching the internet for horses of like disciplines, training level, and breeding will help you determine a fair and honest price for your horse. A good equine appraiser will also help determine a fair market value for your horse if you are willing to pay to have this done. This will also help buyers locate insurance if desired for a new purchase.

The exception would be young horses of known, successful parentage with a strong potential for achieving the same or higher level of winning than their parents did. Knowledgeable buyers that are seeking out prospects will be the market niche for these young horses and the demand for these is good. The trick is getting them in front of the right people. Again, determining the correct market niche for your well bred youngster is important. Advertising a stock breed reining prospect in front of the hunter crowd is probably not going to get you the exposure and the interest that you want.

Family horses and young, untrained horses typically fall into a lesser category. That‘s not saying that the family horse or the untrained, older horse doesn‘t have any value, in fact they are worth their weight in gold to a buyer that is looking for a babysitter horse, or a reliable trail mount! Let’s be honest though, they just won‘t have as much value to a buyer who wants to show as a show horse that is trained, fitted and conditioned for show with sometimes many months of professional training. Research again to determine what these types of horses are selling for in your area and price your horse accordingly. Again, it is important to get them in front of the right people and your ad headline and text should be geared towards getting the attention of the moms and dads out there that want a safe, reliable horse for their children or grandchildren.

Whatever your market niche is for your horse, the same principles apply as outlined above. Good pictures, good video, a healthy, well groomed horse and a good impression of the owner will do nothing but help in a very competitive sales market today.

Communication with Potential Buyers

So you’ve worked hard on your ad, you have your horse priced within market, he’s clean, groomed well and healthy, you have good pictures which represent him well without background clutter. You have a good rider on him, or a good handler that can present him in photos and video in a manner that shows what makes your horse more desirable than any others out there. You check your phone or email box and you have your first inquires, now what?

Communication alone probably loses more sales for people before they even have a chance to discuss the horse, faster than any other item on the above list. Be prompt to respond by email or with a return call, keep in mind that especially in written text you are reflecting yourself and your credibility so avoid things like “script talk” where “itz not kewl 2 tlk same as u wud 4 ur bff”. You are attempting to trade your horse to this buyer in return for several thousand dollars of their hard earned money, so be sure to present yourself in the best possible light as well. Be mindful of spelling and grammar, be to the point and brief without being short or appearing annoyed with their inquiry. Ask if there are any questions they have about the horse that you can help them with and if they would like to see further pictures, then have those pictures ready to go!

A buyer that has to wait days or weeks for more information, a return email or call, more pictures or video is the buyer that is still out there looking. They very well may come across another seller, also with a great horse, that has all these things ready to go and by the time you get back to them, the sale may have gone to someone better prepared.

Expectations of Advertising

As a seller, you are out there in competition with a myriad of other sellers that also have done their homework and have their horse prepared as well as a game plan for a good sale. Choosing your advertising site so that you get your horse out in front of the people that have an interest in what your horse has to offer is important. As is advertising on several different sites to get as much exposure as possible. You only have a few seconds to catch someone’s attention as they flip through the various classified ads. Making sure your pictures are good, the ad text is well written and without spelling errors and that you have all the tools available to buyers that are looking at your horse for sale will help make your ad stand out among the thousands out there competing against yours for attention.

Today’s market being what it is, even well prepared sellers are having problems at times moving a well trained and otherwise desirable horse. Don’t get discouraged if it takes some time to sell your horse. Being open to offers and suggestions, such as a lease with a proper contract, can help get your horse in the right position for a sale. Many sellers will do terms or payments on a sale horse but these, like leases, should be well thought out and with a good, solid sales contract in place.

Believing in your horse and their abilities, and ultimately in their worth so long as they are priced within what their specific market niche can carry, will do nothing but help you in the sales process. Be firm in your beliefs, honest in your communication with potential buyers, flexible in your price to a point and with the correct tools at hand selling your horse will be a much easier process.

Is there a website with a training schedule?

I am just starting to train my 2 year old morgan filly. I have broke QH in the past but I want to train my filly for show. I am planning to do hunter hack with her. I have tons of training supplies and I was just wondering if people follow a strict training schedule. I want to be sure to follow the steps properly to help my horse succeed. Does any have any advice or know of a website that has a training schedule?
EDIT: Well, Greg, FYI no, I am not saddle training my horse at 2. She has barley been handled. I simply want to know the correct sequence of steps to get the best results. I did not ask for the statements that you made. If you don’t have an answer to my question, please do not try to tell me what not to do. You have no idea what my level of horsemanship is, therefore you should not preach to me about what I should and shouldnt do. You obviously don’t know of any such training schedules that may be posted online so do not comment on my question. Thank you!

Well, I would suggest renting some NH videos. Most of them have step by step.
I personally like John Lyons and Tommy Garland.
Clinton Anderson is alright.
I just mention these since you want to do it yourself. Just educate yourself by learning from alot of different people then find what works best for you.

Even as a child in the horse world, Monty Roberts was uncomfortable with the conventional method of breaking, or training, a horse. He competed in rodeos for 22 years, all the while searching for a better way. Eventually, he learned it from the horses themselves. By watching wild mustangs, Roberts was able to identify some of their body language and apply it himself. A good portion of this 48-min…

Horse Training Tips—How To Communicate With Your Horse

Are you planning to break in your new horse but you do not know how to do it? It is important to do a lot of research first before you ride on a horse. Riding an untrained horse can be dangerous. You might have an accident and get yourself injured. Horses are not small like dogs or cats. They are bigger, heavier, and more powerful than the animals that you are used to. Make sure that you know some basic horse training tips before you start training a horse.

Below is a list of some horse training tips that you should know to have a successful and safe training with your horse.

If you feel scared or nervous while training a horse, the horse will be able to feel it. And if the master or trainer is nervous, the beast will also get skittish. Be confident when you come near a horse to earn its trust. Your voice and touch should be gentle but firm. One of the most important horse training tips is to wear the proper outfit. Wear your equestrian clothes if you like. Or just wear something comfortable and safe. Avoid wearing skirts, high heels, or anything inappropriate. Riding boots are great. And do not forget to wear your helmet.

If you want to lead your horse to a certain direction, point your belly button to that direction. Do not lean forward or do not pull the rein or the horse’s mane too hard. Your horse will feel where your body is pointing when you pointing your belly button to the direction where you want to go.

If you are not really confident about your skills, you can ask an experienced horseman or trainer to go with you and to teach you the basics of horsemanship. You can do this for the first few days. but after some time, you need to do things by yourself.

Horse training question: How long does it really take to train a horse to ride? Youtube videos make it look?

so easy… but, I think they may be creating false hope for the novice. I’m still working on gentling mine. Could you give me various time lines on this? What is your experience.. Gosh, this is gonna help so much, thanks.

There is no definite time period to have a horse trained, it tends to vary. Horses are humbling animals; there will always be something to learn, regardless of how long you’ve been in the field.

Ordinarily, it takes a month or so, but I’ve had wild variations.
Longest it took me was six months, but that was on a traumatised TB stallion who required a lot of special attention.

Shortest amount of time was probably for a lovely Connemara I broke for a friend, she was broke after about ten days.

Like I said, it really varies.

Just remember to be patient and ensure that you and the horse build up a bond of trust; that way the breaking in will be so much easier.
Also, try and let your horse teach you a little something on this journey of learning and discovery.
