For many horse owners it is tricky to know when and how to first establish tack for the when training a juvenile horse. Putting on western tack is so overwhelming that horse owners, both experienced and inexperienced alike, put it off far too long. However, the majority of horses allow tack with very little problems. The secret is to do it gradually so the horse can get accustomed to it.

To start, introduce the horse to the bit. If it is familiar with wearing a bridle, it is sometimes easiest to use a bit that doesn’t use a bridle at all. I’ve heard some stories in which horse owners coat the bit with molasses to make it go a little smoother but that is a matter of personal preference. Now, get a soft bit like a snaffle and then use a small amount of binder twine to tie the bit to the far side of the bridle. Make sure it is level with the horse’s mouth. Next, get a second piece of twine and tie it to the near ring of the bit.

Next grab a hold of the horse on a lead-line and try to slide the bit into the far corner of its mouth. You probably won’t have any problems since the majority of horses voluntarily open their mouths for the bit. If by chance it doesn’t, slide your finger into the near corner of its mouth and it should willingly open its mouth. Put the bit in place for a second before slipping it out again. Try to repeat this process a few times, until it allows the bit without a trouble.

While the bit is still on, take a little time to groom it or take it for a relaxing walk. Never apply pressure to the bit. You want the horse to become used to the bit in its mouth so let it chew on the bit for a little and get used to the feeling.

Now it is time to add the saddle. First, you’ll want to begin with a saddle pad. Horse owners place the saddle over the horse’s back and move it around a little so the horse become comfortable with it on. Now that the saddle pad is in place, gently set the saddle on its back.

Once the saddle is on tight, let the horse go so it run around the ring a little. It will probably buck a few times trying escaping the saddle so don’t get nervous. After a little while, it will settle down once it realizes the saddle is not going to fall off no matter how much it bucks.

Does tack usually become available to purchase with horse when you buy it?

Just wondering. I mean, my horse came with all his tack and everything- but we didn’t have to pay seperate- he also came with blankets, grooming supplies, some saddle pads, boots, etc all for 2k. Of course, we DID know the owners pretty well… but I’m just wondering this for my friend, who may buy a horse soon-ish.

It depends. If someone is completely getting out of horses, they might sell all the tack with the horse. However, if they are selling it to replace it with another, then they’d probably hang onto some or all of the gear.

What color tack looks best with a Chestnut horse?

I have a light color chestnut mare. I don’t want to put Red, Black, or yellow on her. I have a brown saddle already and love it so the color has to match with that. I am using the tack to barrel race with so i want it to be sorta eye catching but not to crazy. I like combonations of colors also but mostly one color. If you have a chestnut please send me a picture of the horse with your color tack. Thanks!

I would go with a shade of green (my first choice) and/or blue since I think those colors would look good with a chestnut horse and brown saddle.

There is more and more natural wormer for horses on the horse health market available.

Keep in mind that those products are working though, but only in combination of a very careful and thorough deworming program.

This includes a regular worm egg count of faeces samples of every horse on the premises and an effective environment management. Additional blood sampling will give results about presence of worms in the intestines.

If a worming program will be used for the first time and new horses come onto the premises a frequent dosing during the first weeks/months will be required. How frequent depends on the product itself.

Although natural wormer is significantly cheaper than allopathic (chemical) products, you will find that an effective management and initial treatment is an investment. Once it is up and runs well, you might find it cheaper on the long term.

If one of the above mentioned factors is being neglected, worms will soon be present again.

Bear in mind that not all of those natural worming products are scientifically tested and might not be effective enough for some worm species. Their effectiveness is still not as well researched as the chemical products.

Natural wormer based on homeopathic or herbal ingredients usually cause none or only minor side effects. But they can cause occasionally side effects that can be quite severe, if an acute onset of allergic reaction occurs. So be careful and seek professional advice before you administer those drugs.

Natural products are not killing adult worms, larvae or worm eggs; they are just creating an environment in the equine digestive tract to make it uncomfortable and unattractive for worms.

You will understand that larvae and worm eggs are not influenced by the product. Only, if they also mature to an adult worm, they will probably prefer to” leave”.

There are a lot of alternative worming products on the market and descriptions do promise a lot. Before buying a product try to contact sales departments, get more information by reading fact sheets and try to find people who use it and can share their experience.

Driving Carriages Any Tips?

Hello. I just got a job driving carriages downtown. I’ve never driven before, and the LR Carriage Service knows this. The owner put me to work with one of his cart horses in a round pen and gave me a series of tasks (get his feet moving, walk, trot, lope, turn and face me, back up, and then had me tack him up with a draft saddle- not a harness) He seemed impressed with my technique, and hired me on the spot. I start training next week, and was wondering if ya’ll had any tips? I know how to gee and haw, and how to put pressure on the lines for the gee and haw, but I would like to know some more pointers before i go out there. :]

Are you going to get more training with driving before they turn you lose?

Its easy to drive a team or single when they are good, its another when it goes bad and not knowing what to do in those situations.

When I started driving, I asked more questions on what to do when things went bad and techniques to use.

Given that the horses your on are probably already been there, done that with this job, they will probably be training you fairly well to good calm broke teams.

The best thing you can do, is go learn from these guys on their animals with the way they taught their animals cues and voice commands. My mules are taught different commands than my friends driving animals. Every driver has their own little ‘tweaks’ that they use for their animals.

Just be open and honest with the owner and take in as much as you can. Thats a great job, hopefully they give you great training!
