My friend uses Fiebing’s Saddle Soap. I recently bought some and it works really well; no greasy or filmy residue left over on it. I like to use a nice soft old rag or really soft sponge that they use on cars for polishing.

What color tack looks best with a Chestnut horse?

I have a light color chestnut mare. I don’t want to put Red, Black, or yellow on her. I have a brown saddle already and love it so the color has to match with that. I am using the tack to barrel race with so i want it to be sorta eye catching but not to crazy. I like combonations of colors also but mostly one color. If you have a chestnut please send me a picture of the horse with your color tack. Thanks!

I would go with a shade of green (my first choice) and/or blue since I think those colors would look good with a chestnut horse and brown saddle.

Should I get a Western saddle for trail riding or will a English saddle work just as well?

I ride English but I was wondering if I should purchase a western saddle for when I go trail riding? Also should I get two different saddles a very nice expensive English saddle for when I’m showing and I not so expensive saddle when I am just riding my horse in the arena for lessons or just for out exercises! Just so you know I do Show Jumping!

Sell your english saddle and get a western saddle. Western saddles are so much more comfortable for trail riding. Much more useful as well. For me, there is nothing better than riding in a western saddle on a good horse smoking a pipe with some good pipe tobacco.

The Oldenburg warmblood registry came about in 1923.The Oldenburg’s history lies with the native horse of Oldenburg, the Alt-Oldenburg, meaning old Oldenburg. The Holstein horses were used as war horses in the middle ages, the In the 16th and 17th century there was a need for coach horses, so the heavier war horse was refined using Neapolitan, Barbary and Spanish bloodlines, to develop a lighter type of horse, that was suitable for coach work. Later on in the 19th century there was a need for a more athletic faster coach horse consequently the Holstein was improved by adding blood from Yorkshire coach horses, which themselves were high in thoroughbred blood.

In the 1960s the Holstein breed was refined once again, using Thoroughbred blood from Britain and Ireland. We used to show Dumpling, a 9hh shetland pony. He was 35 y.o. when he won a first in the older horse classes.

Ok so i ride english saddle whenever i ride. but every year i go to my cousins farm and they ride western. me and my cousin always gallop around the farm, but a wester saddl is alot wider and bigger than an english one. can any of you western riders give me tips on riding with a western saddle???

i ride western and english.
sit how you would wen riding english but with your legs slightly forward. your toes should be relaxed with light pressure in the stirrups and pointing slightly out. let your calves melt and dont use the horn or put your butt into the seat of the saddle to hold on. loosen your hips and feel with the horse but dont over bend because you’ll loose your center of gravity. keep you spine long and sit tall & wen u trot u can post, two point, or just keep your weight evenly in the stirrups and your butt in the seat, squeezing gently with your upper thighs. same thing wen u run or lope, u can two point or sit back and relaxed. ask your cousin for one on one help.

Horse Spurs and Its History

It is thought that the earliest spurs were probably made from bone or wood. Spurs have been used by horsemen and cowboys throughout the ages. In its earliest days the spur and the metal it was made with were a mark of rank. This is where the expression to “earn your spurs” came from. As punishment a knight would have his spurs and sword broken and taken away as part of his disgrace Rowels came along in France or Spain in the 10th Century or so and evolved through the Northern European and Spanish cultures according to their needs at the time. The Rowel of a spur is usually round and spins like a wheel with spikes that attach to the neck or shank of the spur. It is the part that actually touches the horse and makes a jingle noise when the rider is walking around.

Spurs are best known in the American West for use with the American cowboys. Spur styles continue to change just as the saddle, chaps and all other horse-riding equipment has changed over the years. The influence of early Spanish design is still evident in today’s spurs. Chaps also influenced the spur in that where long chaps are worn, a dropped heel pattern and a chap guard were invented. The chap guard has a curved blunt piece that comes out on the shank just behind the heel which keeps the chap away from the rowel. The rowel is usually sharp and could tear up the leather of your chap in no time.

There are as many spur designs as their are horses in Wyoming and every maker tends to put their own special interest and personality to each one. Western style spurs tend to be heavy and are often decorated with rowels that rotate or spin. The neck of the spur is longer than others to fit the style of the western rider. The English spur is very different as it is lighter and more slim. It has a short neck with usually no rowel. The English spur has a blunt projection that is usually rounded. There are some English spurs that use a rowel, but they are rounded with no spikes and are used in sports requiring finesse such as dressage. Its goal is not to speed the horse up but to control his movements in precise complex movements.

A few types of spurs are: Prince of Wales style, The Disk style, Swan neck with rowels and the Waterford spur. They are divided in to Men’s, Women’s and Children’s, according to the width of the spur. They also come in different neck lengths.

There are also modern type spurs used by motorcyclists. They are basically worn as foot jewelry that are hung off of the leather motorcycle boots. They are sometimes similar to spurs worn by equestrians and can actually be a safety tool as some of them have bright material that can worn motor vehicle drivers of their presence on the road. They can even add small strobing LED lights to them for added safety at night.

In any case, the spur has had a long history and multiple uses even in modern day. They will always be ultimately thought of as a tool of the American cowboy in the end.

Buying Guide for Horse Bridles

Bridles are used for riding and driving horses (pulling a wagon or cart) and allow the rider to communicate with the horse. Depending on your style of riding you can purchase an English or Western Bridle. You certainly want to buy a bridle that fits your horse properly.

English Bridles have a noseband (leather strap that buckles around the nose of the horse,) these reins are then buckled to one another at the ends. Western Bridles generally have no noseband and the reins are “split”, they do not buckle at the end. Western Bridles are usually decorative with features on the leather and they can also be adorned with silver.

Double bridles are used for English Riding in the dressage discipline and use two bits in the mouth at once, a snaffle bit and a curb bit. The two bits allow the rider to have very precise control of the horse and are usually seen in top levels of dressage.

Effective riding occurs when the horse receives commands through the reins. Pulling on the reins can be used to steer or stop the horse. If you have done your homework and learned how to ride, you should not need to yank on the bridle. You must remember that your horse’s mouth is sensitive and you could hurt him if you yank too hard which could cause your horse to act out and resist the bridle.

A bridle that does not fit correctly could also hurt the horse. Leather straps could chafe and the mouth could be pinched by the bit. If you do not know how to fit a bridle correctly, ask your instructors, a knowledgeable horse person and even the sales clerk at the tack shop could help you.

It is always a good idea to start off using the gentlest type of tack possible, such as a cavesson noseband and snaffle bit for English riding. If you have difficulty knowing what would work best for your horse, find out if you could try out different styles, even borrow a bit.

There are a number of different bits and nosebands which give you more control; however they are more severe on the horse. If you are not an experienced horse person

always consult a horse trainer before buying a different bit or noseband for your bridle.

The cost of bridles can vary considerably. You can visit your local tack store to look at the styles and types. Tack stores often have used tack for sale which is also an option. Keep in mind that you really need to buy a quality bridle. Bridles made of cheap leather or a second hand bridle with a lot of wear and tear is easy to break.

You can buy a bridle at your local feed and tack shop. You could take a look locally and then shop and compare prices online too. Used bridles can also be found in your local newspaper under the classified ads.

Horse Riding – The Heavy Rider

With a growing number of people suffering from obesity, it is not surprising that many riders are questioning their horse’s comfort at carrying their weight. The pressure to slim down is bad enough without worrying about your horse, but when you have an animal’s wellbeing to consider it can be difficult to know what to do. So how do you know if you are too heavy for your horse?

If you were to look at things purely from a pound for pound position, a horse can comfortably carry about 25% of their weight. That means that a 1000lb horse can manage 250lb of weight. Keep in mind that this must be calculated from the horse’s fit weight; if he is a hundred pounds overweight, it does not make him capable of carrying more weight. In fact, he should carry less weight since he is already carrying more than he should.

But life isn’t simple, and the pound for pound scale isn’t an accurate way of calculating the capability of a horse. There are many other factors to consider. For example, 250lb of floppy, bouncy rider are far harder to carry than 250lb of fit, balanced rider. While 250lb may seem like a lot of weight, it is not uncommon for a fit, tall man to weigh close to that. Some heavyset women can be very fit, and yet still weight well over 200lb. When calculating the weight your horse can manage, it is as important to consider your riding skill as to consider your weight.

Another factor is the conformation of your horse. While it may seem that a bigger horse would be able to carry more weight, this is not always the case. Sometimes a big horse is built in such a way that he has a weak back and cannot carry as much weight.

Consider a 15hh quarter horse with a short back and compact size and a long, lanky 16hh Thoroughbred. Purely looking at weight and height, it would seem logical that the 16hh Thoroughbred would be able to carry more weight. But, this is not the case. With a long back and a finer build, the Thoroughbred is not built to carry weight. Bred for racing for many years, Thoroughbreds are built for speed and for carrying a lightweight rider. The Quarter Horse may be smaller, but the shorter back and more compact muscling are far more suited to carrying weight. Quarter horses have been bred for sports where they are expected to carry weight, and be athletic at the same time.

If you are not sure if you are the right weight for you horse, you need to consider your horse’s condition carefully. If he is fit, has a reasonably short back, and is showing no signs of soreness, he’s probably doing just fine with your weight. While losing a few pounds would be good for both him and you, he is managing. On the other hand, if you horse is unfit, or has a long back, or is showing signs of soreness either in his back or in his limbs, you need to rethink your choice of mount.

This does not necessarily mean that you need a new horse. You can spend some time working on your weight, which always helps. But there are other things you can do. If your horse is not fit, see if you can find ways to get him fit. This could be longing him, or asking another rider to work with him a bit, if you do not have the time. Make sure that you saddle fits your horse well, and take some lessons to tune up your riding. Avoid doing a sitting trot, and try riding in a half seat when cantering. Keep high-impact riding to a minimum until you get your weight down.

Of course, if you horse is showing signs of soreness and you are not in a position to loose much weight, you may need to consider finding a horse better suited to your build. Your horse might be happier with a smaller rider, and you might feel better with a horse that fits you.
