Instead of using conventional procedures, Monty persuades an unbroken horse to accept a saddle, bridle and rider in approximately 30 minutes without pain or fear, something traditionalists view as impossible. The goal is to create a foundation of trust and instill an understanding of what behavior man desires from the young animal that will carry him throughout his life….

The English Horse Racing Classics – A Quick Guide

There is often much confusion as to what exactly are English Classic races and what are simply Group One races. The first aspect to remember is that there are five English Classic races and they are all carry Group One status, but due to the history of these races they carry a much higher prestige and status in the Racing world. The second point is that they are only open to three year old thoroughbred horses. The Five Classics are:

2000 Guineas

This is the opening Classic of the season and it is open to three year old colts and fillies. It is raced over the famous Rowley Mile at Newmarket and is a big test of speed, stamina and courage over an undulating straight course. Although it is open to fillies they very rarely run, they are normally entered for the 1000 Guineas (See below). For the colts it is also the first leg of the triple-crown; which is made up from the 2000 Guineas, the Epsom Derby and the St Leger. This year the race will be run on 2nd May, which is the opening day of the Guineas Festival.

1000 Guineas

The second Classic of the season, which is open to 3 year old thoroughbred fillies only and is also raced over Newmarket’s Rowley Mile. The race also forms the first leg of the Fillies triple-crown, which can be completed by winning this race, the Epsom Oaks and the St Leger. It is raced on the second day of the Guineas Festival, which this year will be 3rd May.

The Epsom Oaks

The third Classic is the Epsom Oaks, which like the 1000 Guineas is only open to 3 year old fillies. However this is raced on the Epsom Downs race course over a distance of 1 mile 4 furlongs in length. The Oaks forms the second leg of the Fillies Triple Crown and is one of the most valuable fillies only races in the world. This year it will be run on June 4th.

The Epsom Derby

The Derby is probably the most famous and prestigious race of the five English Classics and is renowned the World over. Although it is open to fillies as well as colts, it is rare for them to be entered, with the Fillies usually opting for the Epsom Oaks. Like the Oaks, it is run at Epsom Downs race course over a 1 mile 4 furlongs and forms the second leg of the colts triple crown. The race will take place this year on June 5th.

St Leger

The fifth and final Classic race of the season is the St Leger which is open to three year old colts and fillies and is raced at Doncaster race course over the longer distance of 1 mile 6 furlongs. It is a big test of stamina and often its winners stay in training for the following year. In some respects the St Leger has lost some of its importance, due mainly to its distance. The last colt to have won the Triple Crown was the great Nijinsky in 1970 and the last filly to have won the fillies version was Oh So Sharp in 1985. The St Leger takes place on 12th September.

The importance and prestige of the five classic races is underpinned by not only the prize money available to the winner of each races, all of which are well in to six figures (the prize money available for the Epsom Derby is £1.25 million) but also by the potential breeding values of the winning horses. Any horse that wins any of the classics will automatically increase in value at stud in the hope that they pass their winning genes on to future progeny.

Horse Training – Basics of Groundwork

Learning groundwork basics is essential in horse training. Here are some guidelines.

Next to effectively communicating with the horse, groundwork is the second most important thing that you should understand. Effective equine communication and groundwork go together because you improve your bond with the equine with constant groundwork. Through groundwork, the basics of natural horsemanship and the details of your equine’s personality are further discovered.

Always start groundwork with an open and positive mindset. This doesn’t only apply to the horseman but to the equine as well. Training with a bad mood is detrimental to your advancement. Secondly, keep in mind that it’s your horse’s job to have fun—and yours as well. Be playful but don’t forget that it is also work for you.

The Round Pen – What is it?

The round pen is not just some area where you unthinkingly lunge your horse in circles. You get the more crucial tasks done in that place such as establishing dominance and authority. Respect is established in the round pen. Sensitizing and desensitizing are done in the round pen. It is the perfect prospect for the horseperson to introduce things that may be new to the equine.

Movement is the main thing that you would want to teach your equine. You can only achieve this with patience because even with great communication skills—if something is new to animal—the equine will not get it the first time. The principle to use is “Repetition”. Communication should be clear and you should master the use of pressure to make the equine do what you want. You and your equine should memorize things by heart until they become natural and effortless.

Tips in doing ground work.

Once in the pen, make sure that the animal is comfortable before you start training. When you feel the horse is at ease and ready for anything, immediately establish yourself as the dominant one. Get yourself and your equine into position with the necessary tools nearby—within arm’s reach.

Although auditory directives are not yet necessary, feel free to talk to your equine if that makes the animal feel more at ease.

It is more about being aware of your body language and movements. Be consistent.

Master the use of pressure. Make the equine circle in both directions. Realize that the equine moves away from pressure.

Once you and your horse are in sync, you can change directions by blocking your equine with your arm closest to its nose.

The whole activity is also some kind of a power struggle and this where you establish your dominance further. There will be instances that the equine will test you by finding ways of escape from the pressure you impose. Remember to be patient, firm, but fair. Reward your equine by softening the pressure when it does the right thing.

Over time, your equine will realize that following your directions is the best for him. It will respect your instructions and trust you that you only want the best for the both of you. Always be keen with your horse’s body language and adjust appropriately.

questions about martingales, and draw reigns?

I train western pleasure on my 7 year old mare. She is very good most of the time, and I hardly use any training tools, but every once in awhile I will when I ride her in a D-ring snaffle.

So I’ve been taught martingales are to keep the horse from throwing it’s hear and rearing, and draw reigns help get your horse to the speed you want, and head placement also. Well my horse does 10 times better in a martingale, because in draw reigns she gets behind the bit. My old trainer thinks this is weird. Is this true?

Now i’m only 15, so please no rude comments.
I’m asking so I can find out. And yes I properly know how to use both of them

draw reins don’t control speed, they are to lower or collect the horses head/neck set in, and to teach them a frame

martingales are for when a horse tosses his head up & to keep him from taking off if he evades the bit/throws his head up. i don’t use a martingale cause if used in correctly (like most people do) it becomes a vice to keep the head down.

she gets behind the bit in draw reins cause you are mostlikely not supporting her with your legs/seat. you need to pull her back up with your legs & support her & ride her forward with your seat to get her on the bit. if you are having troubles w/ training aids, go back to the basics w/o them and work on the horses impulsion & head/frame in a snaffle

EDIT- draw reins are only used when ridden, NEVER on the ground, thats dangerous.

jenny- draw reins are supposed to be connected to the saddle (girth) and the bit, coming over the horses head, and back towards the saddle for the rider to hold. they are dangerous to use on the ground because you can’t help the horse frame up w/ your seat/legs. if used while the rider is on the ground, the horse could pull his/her head straight up & seriously injure himself/herself

bags are the classic cars of the fashion set

Handb

<a href=”http://www.leatherbags.blogspot.com”>leather bags</a>

ags are the new shoes, the must have “it” accessory that has all the fashion-istas clamouring for the latest offering from popular designers. It’s also a market that has more in common with the male-dominated world of classic cars than you’d realise.
Few of you will have missed the fuss a couple of months ago when Sainsbury’s sold 20,000 “I’m not a plastic bag” Anya Hind-march totes for [pound]5 each. Within hours those same unbleached cotton bags were selling for in excess of [pound]150 on eBay. “Every girl has a handbag,” says Christie’s specialist Monica Turcich, “and every girl wants one. Women now want the ‘it’ bag and the one nobody else is carrying. They’ve always been popular and they are the section of our 20th-century fashion sales for which we get the most phone calls, but now they are doing particularly well because everyone wants handbags, whereas 10 years ago there weren’t the ‘it’ bags like we have today, simply the classics.”
Like cars, most of the more recent designer handbags which sell through dealers and auction houses make significantly less than their original retail price, losing value the second the initial purchase has taken place. That is good news for both collector investors and handbag enthusiasts, but there are some exceptions to the rule.
Last March Christie’s sold a red Hermes crocodile skin Kelly bag for [pound]10,800, this had only been purchased in 1994 and was originally a bespoke product. The Kelly bag is the “holy grail” of the classic handbag world according to Turcich. “Chloe and other more contemporary bags are more driven by what’s popular now, but for Hermes and Chanel’s quilted bag, these are classics which never go out of style and are always useable.” Kelly bags can be bought for [pound]600 and can often be sold on for [pound]1,000- [pound]2,000, which isn’t bad for a bag which might have been bought back in the 1960s.
There’s no doubt that most handbags are being bought to be used, it’s not an investment market in the same way as many other collectables such as paul smith,Abercrombie and Fitch, dsquared etc, but again there are parallels to the car market. By buying a classic bag and looking after it, you are unlikely to lose money, rather see a steady gain with the added return of enjoying using it.
Hindmarch’s “I’m not a plastic bag” bags are unlikely to make it to “classic” status, they are after all mass-produced cotton totes, but other handbags from her range might well do so. So far Christie’s has-n’t sold any Hindmarch bags, but Turcich says she wouldn’t be surprised if they start turning up at auction soon and she wouldn’t turn them away. “Kylie Minogue was pictured carrying a Chloe bracelet bag around a few years ago which sparked a fashion and now we are selling the same thing at auction.”
There is a pristine one in the next auction which is estimated at [pound]800 to [pound]1,000 along with another Chloe handbag in the same lot. “I think Chloe has started the ‘it’ bag scene” adds Turcich, “I don’t know how long it will take for them to become classics of their own, but I’m sure these will hold their value in five or 10 years’ time. People just don’t seem to have paid attention to the fact that handbags have become the new shoes in the last few years, there is now an appreciation of the design that goes into them. There are shoe designers that are artists and so too with handbags.”
It’s not always about big names, a few weeks ago Ms Minogue was at the shop of Tony Durante, a handbag dealer at Alfie’s in London, and purchased a white raffia bag with a horse’s head on the front for around [pound]200. Brightly coloured raffia bags are in at the moment because it’s summer. Durante says that Kylie loved this particular bag because it was unusual. Buying it from a vintage fashion dealer she’s unlikely to bump into another celebrity carrying one. Durante says that his customers are looking for this “unusualness” factor.
If you do want to retain the value in your handbag then you should go for one that is in excellent condition, is a good design and beautiful. Some “it” bags will undoubtedly go down in value as fashions change, but the classics should stay steady.

any ideas? I have a very very old wrought iron horse stall gate. It’s pretty rusty. I was thinking of trying to get most of the rust off and using it as a head board. Maybe a sky blue ceiling, white fluffy comforters or pale quilts. What else can anyone think of?

I don’t know when did the oversize jewelry stared to be popular, but now I know the traditional appreciation of the beauty of mini size goods is backing, though little jewelry has less publicized character, it still can reveal female’s beauty by another specifics.

There is district stress in the matching between small size jewelry and clothing, if you wear many cloth, you are suggested to give up the little jewelry for it will be overwhelmed buy your clothes. So you should remember the following points which will be helpful for you.

a. The simplicity degree should be appropriate. Once simplicity clothing matches with not big size jewelry, the effect will be 1+1>2, especially the design of neckline and wristband parts of a cloth, the more simple the better. Heart-shaped neckline and three or nine quarter sleeve are better.

b. Clothing color, the less the better. Generally speaking, small size jewelry not in multi colors, so it determines the colors of one’s clothing cannot be too many, it’s better to choose little-cells upper outer garment.

c. Overlap wear is better. We always think that overlap wear is the monopolization of exaggerated jewelry, but it will supply a better effect to wear overlap jewelry, you wear see the elegance from them. It will reduce the contrast of high and short, so this matching method just fit for slender tall girls.

Maybe, many people think that small size jewelry can not be compared with big size, it is not right. The biggest distinguished point is the specific s in this year popular mini size jewelry. Little style gives us clearly views and each specific is designed carefully.

If you match them in a perfect way, greater effect will be seen from your body.

why do i see so many girls with really bad hair extensions!?

I don’t have anything against hair extensions in general in fact i have had some myself, but i seem to be seeing loads of girls with really bad extensions lately. They look awful, matted, dry etc i thought the point was for them to look real not like you spent all day cutting hair off a horse and gluing it to your scalp!?
you can buy clip in extensions made with human hair for £30 – £40 not that much more than synthetic hair. Would’nt it be better to go natural if you cant afford good ones than to go out looking like you just had a fight in a hedge!?

Honestly I don’t think I’ve ever seen any extensions that look good (probably cause if they were good extensions I wouldn’t notice them) and that whole thing where they’re just two piece of hair hanging down either side of the head is a really odd look. Personally I wouldn’t wear hair extensions but I understand why people do and don’t have a problem with it but they should definatly start looking after them more and not making them quite so obvious.

In Bible versus Quran: the Birds will eat horses and riders

The Lord God’s Invitation in Bible versus Quran (1)

In His strange Invitation (Ezekiel 39:17-20), the Lord Jehovah says;

And you son of man, Speak unto the birds of every sort, and to every beast of the field, Assemble yourselves, and come; gather yourselves on every side to my sacrifice that I do sacrifice for you, even a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel, that you may eat flesh and drink blood. You shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan. And you shall eat fat till you are full, and drink blood till you are drunk, of my sacrifice which I have sacrificed for you. And you shall be filled at my table with chariots, with horses and riders, with mighty men, and with all men of war.

It should be emphasized that the “Drunken Birds” of drinking blood of the princes of the earth is not mentioned therein in the Quran; and the Quran says that the birds in general live in communities like human beings. [Read the article: The ostrich in Bible versus Quran (1)].

On the other hand, Allah invites the People in the Quran, He says:

O people Keep your duty to your Lord; obey your Lord; fear the Lord and fear the torment of a day (the Day of Judgment) when no parent shall avail a child, thereon in any way; and no child, thereon, shall avail its parent in any way. Surely Allah’s promise of resurrection after death will truly take place.

So, do not let the life of this world deceive you. Let not the comfort and adornment of the life of this world beguile you, nor let the deceiver (Satan) deceive you concerning Allah, because of His forbearance and His granting respite for the disbelievers.

==================================

The Lord God’s Invitation in the Bible (1)

Ezekiel 39:17-20 (English Standard Version)

17″As for you, son of man, thus says the Lord GOD: Speak to the birds of every sort and to all beasts of the field, ‘Assemble and come, gather from all around to the sacrificial feast that I am preparing for you, a great sacrificial feast on the mountains of Israel, and you shall eat flesh and drink blood.

18 You shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth of rams, of lambs, and of he-goats, of bulls, all of them fat beasts of Bashan.

19And you shall eat fat till you are filled, and drink blood till you are drunk, at the sacrificial feast that I am preparing for you.

20And you shall be filled at my table with horses and charioteers, with mighty men and all kinds of warriors,’ declares the Lord GOD.

The Lord God’s Invitation in the Quran (1)

Verse 31:33 (Yusuf Ali Translation)

O mankind! Do your duty to your lord, and fear (the coming of) a day when no father can avail aught for his son, or a son avail aught for his father. Verily, the promise of Allah is true: let not then this present life deceive you, nor let the chief deceiver deceive you about Allah.

Trojan Removal Procedure.

Malware is a general word for all form of Viruses, Spyware etc. This procedure works for all Malware. Replace the Ewido program with the appropriate program.

You might be unable to access the Internet after removing the Malware so you will need to run LSPfix or Winsockxpfix (as appropriate). Download one and save to desktop, run it later.

LSPfix: all Windows OS except 95.

http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

Winsock XP Fix: Windows XP only.

http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html

Download and Update Ewido:

http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

– If you have problems updating see here:

http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/

Once the updates are installed do the following:

Let’s get cleaning

Part 1

• Temporarily show hidden files.

For Windows XP:

1.
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

2.
Click Appearance and Themes, and then click Folder Options.

3.
On the View tab, under Hidden files and folders, click “Show hidden files and folders”, and clear(uncheck) the “Hide protected operating system files” check box.

For older systems:

1.
Double-click My Computer, click View, and then click Folder Options.

2.
On the View tab, under “Hidden files and folders”, click “Show hidden files and folders”, and clear (uncheck) the “Hide protected operating system files” check box.

IMPORTANT: Files are hidden by Windows for a very good reason. It is not wise to experiment with these files. Unfortunately, to successfully remove modern spyware we must turn this protection off temporarily. Please turn the protection back on when you have finished cleaning your system.

Empty your Internet Explorer cache and your other temporary file folders:

1.
On the Internet Explorer Tools menu, click Internet Options.

2.
On the General tab, in the Temporary Internet Files section, click the Delete Files button. This will delete all the files that are currently stored in your cache.

3.
Select the Delete all offline content check box in the confirmation dialogue box that appears, click OK.

4.
Click OK again.

Restart in Safe Mode:

To do this you need to hold down or repeatedly tap the F8 key while the computer is booting (when the computer is displaying a black screen with white text). When the boot menu appears, use your keyboard arrows to select “Safe Mode.”

Safe Mode can look quite ugly. The color may look bad, and all of your desktop icons will be very large. This is normal.

Start Scan and let Ewido scan the PC

When the scan and removal are completed REBOOT COMPUTER. This will restart you in normal mode.

If you are unable to access the Internet after removing Malware you will need to run LSPfix or Winsockxpfix (as appropriate).

If you are using Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) and are unable to access the Internet after removing Malware, there is a command that may fix the problem, removing the need to run Winsockxpfix. It works by resetting the winsock catalogue. Click on Start, then Run and type CMD in the dialogue box that appears. Click OK. Type “netsh winsock reset” (no quotes)into the DOS window that appears.

The last steps

If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, and your computer has been successfully cleaned of Malware, there is one more thing that needs to be done.

Delete any old restore points and then create a new restore one. The old ones may, of course, be infected with the Malware and cannot be used.

First, start and then stop the Restore Service. This is done differently depending on what operating system you are running.

Windows XP:

1.
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

2.
Click Performance and Maintenance, click System, and then click on the System Restore tab.

3.
Select the Turn Off System Restore check box, click Apply, then restart your computer.

4.
Return to the System Restore Tab and turn System Restore back on.

Windows ME:

1.
Click Start, click Control Panel, click System.

2.
Click Performance, click File System, and then click Troubleshooting.

3.
Enable the option Disable System Restore, click Apply then restart your computer.

4.
Return to the Troubleshooting tab and turn System Restore back on.

To set a manual restore point complete the following steps:

1.
Click the Start button.

2.
Point to Programs, then navigate to Accessories, then System Tools, then click System Restore.

3.
Choose Create a restore point, and then click Next.

4.

5 Tips to Successful Horse Training

<!– @page { margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } –> <!– @page { margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } –>

Training of horses is a very difficult task. An effective trainer should be well equipped with the understanding of general approaches in handling horses. Also an experience and proper education on teaching horses basic skills is necessary in order to become successful.

With these, here are some helpful tips one can do in order to become efficient in teaching horses:

1. Get to know the horse which will be trained.

Not all animals are the same and their temperaments vary. A good trainer will be sensitive enough to distinguish a tamer and properly behaved horse than one who is not. A clear assessment of the animal will guide the trainer on the approach which must be used during training.

2. A trainer must show authority during training sessions.

To gain the respect and to properly execute commands, the trainer must be confident enough to gain respect from the animal. When the horse has recognized the trainer’s control, it will easily follow orders.

3. Avoid any extreme forms of intimidation.

In doing tip number two, one should avoid using any extreme forms of intimidation that might instill a permanent fear on the animal. Respect, trust and recognition of the master are what one should aim to establish with the horse.

4. Use consistent signals and languages to command the horse.

By using the same signals and languages, confusing the horse will be avoided. This can help the horse to understand what the handler is commanding it to do.

5. Give rewards after a job well done.

Carrot sticks and other food will be appreciated by horses. Using rewards can encourage the horse to continue its good performance.

There are many other things to remember when training a horse and these things are experienced during the actual training sessions. Learning from others’ experiences can contribute as well in helping one become successful in horse training.

Opening a Horse Barn?

I am looking for a gift for a friend whose dream is one day to open her own barn for boarding and training horses. Do any of you know of any how-to books, or do you have any other gift ideas for this person? She has been riding for nearly 20 years, so she doesn’t need any general horse education.

Let’s see.. someone who has 20+ years under their belt… I couldn’t think of anything. She probably has the best idea of what would work best for her. Maybe some kind of 3-D Building computer program? So she can create stalls and landscaping and then view it. Check at a store that sells computer programs.. like Best Buys (US based computer/software, etc store). There probably isn’t a “Dream Horsebarn” program.. but you might be able to find one for a house and yard and just give her a card with it and tell her she can build and view her future horse barn.

How To Sit The Canter Horse Riding

How to canter balanced on a horse

The canter is a 3 beat movement. The well balanced elevated canter is a beautiful pace to ride. As a rider you feel elegant
skilled and wow ‘look at me’.

This is how it should feel
A rider without balance or stability will interfere with a horses natural rhythm. The horse will tighten his back, raise his head and lean on the bit “resist”.

To ride the canter well. A rider needs lower back flexibility, upper body strength endurance and deep core stability. The hamstrings need to keep the impulsion as the hands hold a gentle contact. The riders pelvis tilts forwards and
backwards as the horse rounds his back and then stretches into the next stride.

A rider can learn this movement out of the saddle by training movement and stability on a physio ball. The functionof core stability at the canter can be broken into stages and trained. A good rider needs a flexible lower back with movement through the pevlis and hips. The upper back is best kept upright, this takes good muscle strength and
endurance from the holding muscles.

Applied Posture Riding teaches rider to ride. It does not teach you how to train a horse but ‘How to ride a Horse’. How to ride the canter is one specific exercise this prgram will teach you. The ball exercises are specific and will teach movement patterns you can practice. The how to canter exercises involve moving the ball in circles to gain mobility and core strength. The more often this is practiced the better a rider will become. The how to canter exercises on the horse are easy and give the rider that ah haaa feeling.

I have had huge success with tis prgram Go to the website and read the testimonials you to can learn to canter and ride well.

Arrgh.. I need to complain right now.?

My friend makes me so mad sometimes, she has only been rideing for 2 mounths now and has only leased one horse, her parents decided to get her a horse right, and ever since she has gotten that horse she thinks she knows everthing about horses! She keeps braging to me about her ” NEW Jumping Saddle” and saying that my tack is a pile of junk, and she goes around picking out all the flaws that my horse has ( my horse is nicer then hers, trained better, nicer, ext…) , she also just goes and uses my tack and grooming supplies including MY HORSES jolly ball, blankets, treats ect… I have tried talking her about it and she wont admit to anything and when she says she really needed it because she could not find her whatever it was. I need advice on what to do. Help me I’m sick of this!

Neon is right, a real friend doesnt treat you like that, nobody should be treated like that.

Have you ever heard the saying “People make fun of others to make them seem better?” well in this case i would consider that saying true. Maybe shes insecure about her jumping, or about her horses, or about her supplies and thinks that if shes better than you, then it doesnt seem so awful. Have you ever been upset because someone said u had ugly hair, so you tried to find someone else with greasy hair and hoped you were better?

Next time she decides she needs to rain on your parade, dont get mad. She either wants a reaction or she wants to feel better about herself. Just smile and say “Thats great, i like my tack. but thanks for your input.” SMILE.. dont look mad.. infact dont get mad. Just think how much you love your horse..

Horses arent a contest. Who cares about who is better? shes supposed to be your friend. And what friend uses your things? get a tack box that you can lock, or take it with you so she cant have access to it. You arent supposed to share grooming supplies either – it can cause her horse to break out, or even yours. it can cause rashes..

be the bigger person, dont insult her back, that will just make you look as bad as her

ADD:
i love my qh horse… you’d tell her she had a ass full of junk and then talk to her parents… id be furious

The History Of Horses And Texas

When you say the word horses a few places come to mind, Montana, Wyoming, but none as much as Texas. Texas and its horses have quite a history. In this article we will introduce you to a little Texas history and the horses that are involved.

First, we have to go into a little Mexican and Spanish History. Texas was, for a long time, under Spanish rule. Spain ruled Mexico and Mexico ruled Texas you might say.

Spain’s introduction of warfare on horseback is very well known. The horse helped the Conquistadors conquer more and more territory throughout South America. Their territory once extended from Peru and Argentina all the way up into Texas and Louisiana.

Most of the groups the warriors from Spain encountered had no horses and were at a huge disadvantage in battle. The image we always see of the Spanish Soldier is one of him in armor and on horseback.

Another image that is conjured up when mentioning horses and Texas is Indians on horseback. What many do not know is that the Indians in Texas had no horses until they were brought in during Spanish rule of the area. Most hoses the Indians rode were ones stolen from settlers and soldiers after seeing the advantage the soldiers had over them.

When Mexicans first began to settle in Texas around where the Friars built their missions to bring religion to the Indians, most of them didn’t bring horses either. People walked hundreds of miles to get to where they would eventually settle and build their homes. Many had mules or donkeys, but few had horses.

It was the same for those who came from various places within the new United States. They came by boat to New Orleans many times, but then had a long walk to get to their new Texas home where the Mexican government was giving land away for free.

The settlers soon discovered there were wild horses in Texas. What we now call Mustangs were abundant and were free if you could catch them and train them. These horses were not as big as other horses, but they were very sturdy and strong animals that became a huge part of Texas history.

You have to see it how it was then. There was not that much actual cash money to be had anywhere in Texas. There was free land if you were willing to go there and claim it. There were free horses if you were willing to catch and train them. There were even free cattle if you were willing to round them up, the Texas Longhorn.

So many settlers made the long trek to Texas, converted to Catholicism, which was required by the Mexican government if you wanted free land, then captured and trained free Mustangs, which they then used to round up the free cattle.

It sounds great, huh? Just go grab some free land, free horses, and free cattle and you were on your way! Not exactly. It was a very rough life. One that not many people today could even fathom. There was not many people in Texas, some Indian tribes did not want settlers there and showed it through violent attacks, and the work was hard.

To make money from the cattle or horses that were collected they had to be driven all the way to New Orleans for sale. This drive took months to accomplish. The travel we do today spoils our ability to understand the way it was for these settlers.

Some of them spent more than a year traveling to find where they and their families would settle. They then spent at least another year building their house and gathering the horses and cattle that might make up their rancho. Then figure at least a 6 month round trip to sell cattle or horses just to make enough money to buy supplies that were not available free on the Texas range.

The Mustang Horse proved to be one of the best horses for soldiers. It was sturdy enough to handle the rough terrain that larger horses could not handle. They could go without water longer than other horses. They were not skittish when it came to gunfire and battle.

The Texas Rangers rode Mustangs while roaming Texas in search of Banditos and Outlaws. Many men riding Mustangs fought the Battle of San Jacinto. The Apache Indians used them somewhat, but the fierce Comanche Indians had many Mustangs and were some of the greatest horsemen to ever live anywhere. But that is another story.

I hope this short article gave you at least a glimpse into where horses in Texas came from and how they were used. Look in your favorite search engine for more about the Mustangs that still run free today and for more about Texas history and horses. You’ll find the topic interesting and entertaining.

Model Railroad Supplies For Beginners – What You Need To Get Started With Model Trains

Starting any new hobby always brings a sense of anticipation and Model Railroading is no exception. Once they have been to a train show, or have simply seen a model train layout displayed somewhere, many people become excited by the possibility of operating their own train setup. This excitement often leads to a sense of being overwhelmed and sometimes sticker shock, after visiting a hobby store and looking at the huge array of model railroad supplies available and the wide range of prices.

Well, it doesn’t have to be overwhelming and it doesn’t take a fortune to get started with model trains. The simplest layouts consist of a small oval track and an locomotive with a few cars. It can be set up on the floor, a simple table, or even an old door or piece of plywood on two saw horses! Often when you talk to experienced hobbyists, they talk about the need for a strong custom bench and lots of room to set up your layout, but don’t let that stop you from getting started. You can graduate to a more complex and expensive setup as you get more involved in railroading. As a beginner, you may not even know in what areas you are most interested. Do you enjoy the different locomotives and rolling stock which comprise your trains, or do you prefer building the scenery and making the miniatures look realistic? Maybe you prefer wiring the electrical control parts of the track or configuring the software to work to your liking. One of the best things about model railroading is the wide range of skills that you can learn and put to use. There is something for almost everyone to enjoy.

The other nice thing about this hobby is that you can do as much or as little of it yourself as you like. Some of the most popular model railroad supplies are kits for just about every aspect from trains to tables to scenery, to electrical wiring and software. These range from simple all inclusive starter kits to kits for individual parts designed for the more advanced modeler. You can buy train and scenery kits separately or kits that include both. The kits themselves can be either completely finished and ready to set up and run, or do it yourself kits that require more complex construction, painting and assembly. Once again, it is easy to get started with a simpler kit and upgrade to something more complex as your needs dictate, and budget allows. These kits also vary in price and complexity depending on the scale or gauge with which you decide work.

Starter train kits can be purchased for as little as $80 or $90 but most will want one of the kits in the $200 range. These train kits can be specific to an industry or a type of train, steam or diesel for example. Starter kits typically come with a 4′ by 3′ oval track, a locomotive, several cars and a simple transformer and controller.

Scenery kits, building kits and layout kits vary widely depending on the components and how much do it yourself work you want to do. A building kit for a simple small town with 15 buildings can be purchase for about $160. Layout kits, which provide the base for your layout including materials for hills, valleys and tunnels start at about $250. Scenery kits which contain materials for trees, grass, rocks, etc. start at about $65. Each of these can be purchased individually as the need arises.

Software for model trains starts at as little as $20 for simulation software, and layout controllers at about $200 but you don’t have to have either of these for your first train setup.

Any of these model railroad supplies can be purchased at your local hobby store. Hobby shops are usually very helpful because they want you to keep coming back . They can provide a hands-on experience and the chance to talk to others who know what it is like when you are just getting started. They can often help you avoid common beginner’s mistakes that they have already made. These items can also be found at local model railroad shows and conventions.

You may also find these items locally advertised or at yard or garage sales or auctions. All model railroaders were once beginners and you can often find bargains on trains from the hobbyist who is ready to trade-up. Be sure to do your research before buying from these sources so that you know the value of what is being offered.

As you can see, there are many sources of model railroad supplies for beginners on any budget. One of the great things about this hobby is that you can get involved as deeply, or as little as you like. You can begin with a simple kit and advance in whatever direction your interest takes you. Some hobbyists never make their own scenery, preferring to enjoy simply running their trains, while others get involved in every detail down to making their own coal and logs and plants! So get started. You’re going to love this!
