Winter Horse Blankets – How to Choose a Turnout Blanket for Your Horse

Because horse blankets are used for so many different situations, it shouldn’t be surprising for you to find that there are many different types of horse blankets and sheets.

Horse blankets typically come in three different weights. A lightweight, known as a sheet, a medium weight for cold weather and a heavy weight for very cold weather. Medium and heavy weight blankets are filled for warmth, whereas sheets do not have any filling. When shopping for blankets, you will also see something referring to “denier” with a number beside it. This is a term used to indicate the size or number of filament or yarn. Sort of like thread count in sheets. The higher the number, the heavier the yarn or fiber. I had a young gelding that was always playing and ripping his blankets, so I always opted for blankets with a higher denier. I found one manufacturer that would guarantee their blankets against rips or tears for up to two years. These still ripped, but when they did, the manufacturer would replace the blanket.

If your horse needs to be protected from the cold but will be spending time in the pasture, you will want to use a turn out blanket. These blankets are made with waterproof materials and are designed so that it is hard for horses to become twisted around if the horse decides to roll around on the ground. Except for these added features, the turn out blanket is quite similar to the stable blanket.

Obviously the weight needed for a winter horse blanket depends on where you live and how cold it gets. On extremely frigid days, I have been known to layer multiple blankets on my horse, if needed. Blanket manufacturers will typically tell you what temperatures their blankets are good for. I often place my hand between the blanket and the horse to see if the horse feels warm. If her body temperature feels cool, I know I need to move to a heavier weight. In general, I use a sheet for weather in the 50’s a medium weight in the 30s and 40s and a heavy weight for weather in the 20s and teens. I might also use a sheet if it is in the 60s and raining. Wind chill can warrant the need for a warmer blanket. Every horse is different. Older horses or horses that are clipped may require warmer blanketing. So, you have to gauge what is best for your particular climate and your horse’s needs.

There are horse stable blankets and sheets that are worn by the horse while it is in the stable or stall. It is not waterproof and should not be worn while the horse is turned out in the paddock or pasture. While these are nice to have, there’s no reason why you can’t use a turnout blanket while the horse is in the stall.

What are the main differences between a Clydesdale and a shire?

I know that they are different breeds but are there any distinct characteristics separating these breeds? (besides the facts that they came from different lineages of breeding of course).

Physically? Genetically? Etc

I just hate to admit that if presented with one of each of these horses, I probably wouldn’t be able to tell the difference with out someone telling me.
OMG! This is off subject but look at this shire I found: http://www.brookview.karoo.net/Sellafield_Zoo/Shire_horses/shire_horses.html

Doesnt his forelegs/hindlegs look fake? And his face is tiny. I bet its fake

The Strangest of Bed Fellows: Malcolm X, Chuck D, John Wayne and Me

After 45 years growing up as a black, former Black Muslim and current Muslim American, I have come to realize that I am a product of my environment. The good, the bad and the ugly.

Being raised as a Black Muslim during my formative years I was taught to believe that the “White Man” was the devil, this belief was shattered when after converting … again, to main stream Islam, I saw white folks who were Muslims as brothers but the damage was done on some levels. And then came Hip Hop, I was raised during the beginnings of the craze which would eventually go global, who knew?

One of my favorite artists was Public Enemy who spoke to my militant upbringing by rapping:

Elvis was a hero to most but he never meant **** to me, straight out racist the sucker was simple and plain, Mother Blip him and John Wayne…

Ever since then I was turned off by John Wayne and wouldn’t watch a movie with him in it. My views on race relations would continued to be shaped by what I came to call “Kill Whitey” movies, these are the so called up lifting movies where a black character gets to overcome horrendous odds just to get a small piece of the action. Movies like, Remember the Titans, Glory, Tuskegee Airmen and of course the mother of all “Kill Whitey” movies Roots would make me both proud of our determination as well as angry at those white folks who would deny others based only on the color of their skin. These movies would make me wonder, why we have to fight so hard just to get a chance to do things that white people take for granted and only after humiliation and heartache are black folks allowed to overcome. Thank god I was just militant and not violent.

Whenever I watched movies of any type, I would look for myself and how I was being portrayed, I hated the pimping, whorish and bufooning roles and favored those strong characters who didn’t take crap. I felt that if white folks saw us on the screens as buffoons then they would paint the whole race that way, even though I know that all white folks are not like some of the racist character portrayed in my “Kill Whitey” movies. I also know that growing up in my hood, we had pimps and whores as well as successful business men and two parent families.

Now all of this came to a head when the remake of True Grit was released. I knew the original stared John Wayne but I had never seen it. My wife who was born and raised as a Sunni Muslim expressed an interest in seeing the remake as she had seen the original and then confessed to me that she enjoyed John Wayne’s movies. I was stunned and proceeded to recite the previous line from Public Enemy, which she hadn’t heard even though she too grew up in Brooklyn, NY just like me. So, I take my wife to see the movie and we both enjoyed it. I enjoyed the feisty Mattie Ross and craggily Cogburn. With my “Black Eye” I looked for myself and saw the black guy who helped out the Ross’s and the black kid who was training Little Blackie, Mattie’s horse. I was saddened at the end with Mattie not being able say goodbye to Cogburn who had passed away.

After watching the movie, I asked my wife, Zainab, which version she liked but she refused to tell me and suggested that I see the original for myself and answer the question myself. So who would win out, Chuck D and Public Enemy or my wife of 15 years? Several days later to celebrate our 15th year wedding anniversary we sat down to watch True Grit starring John Wayne. I’m sorry Chuck but John was great in that movie! I liked it over the remake. I was more than shocked to see a brother playing a well spoken court assistant in command of the court.

After the movie, Zainab and I began to talk about how we were raised and our differing views. With her being raised as a Sunni Muslim I thought she would have similar views regarding white folks but to my surprise she was more opened minded then me. As a Muslim, Zainab was taught to view people as individuals first while knowing full well the racism that exists in this country against Blacks as well as Muslims. I, on the other was influenced to lump all white folks in the same racist boat and separate out the good ones.

The Muslim holy book, The Quran, includes a verse that states in part; truly, none of you is a believer until he wants for his brother what he wants for himself. This is echoed in the Biblical saying of Do Unto others as you would like done to yourself. If we all, Black, White, Muslim, Jew or Christian heeded the simple sayings of our respected books there would be no need for Public Enemy to Fight the Power or for John Wayne to bring justice to the young Mattie Ross.

As Zainab and I finished True Grit with John Wayne, she remarked how impressed she was that I had evolved; I guess there is hope for me and for all of us. Who knows, I might even ask Chuck D to hit a John Wayne marathon with me, if he’s not available I’ll be more than happy to take my wife. I’m sure she will enjoy it.

Horse thats right for me?

I’m looking into buying a horse/pony this summer and i just wanted to get some advices on any specific breeds that may work for me. I am going to look with my parents and trainer just wanted to know what you guys think.
I’m about 5′2 and about 90llbs. I am 14 and ride english. I do jumper/ hunter and jump about 3′ hoping to jump higher as i improve. I have been riding about 3 years but have lots of experince with training horse and things like that. I also want to buy him or her not to far from ny or ct. I also want him to already be trained (jumper).
Thanks for any ideas you have

I agree with Emily. Welsh’s and Welsh cross ponies are the way to go. They are also the easiest to sell since a great pony is worth a lot to to parents with little kids. If you want to jump find a pony that is leggy and some what thinner boned. Don’t get a stockier pony, they TEND not to as athletic jumping wise. One between 14h and 14.2 just make sure they have their pony papers or you measure them on flat ground. My old trainer is out of the Charlotte, NC area. She specializes in ponies and Welsh’s, and has some GREAT ones for sale right now. It might be a little farther than you wanted but their are videos so you can check them out and decide for yourself.

Mascota, Rich in Heritage and Horses

When you stay in a luxurious rental villa in Puerto Vallarta, it’s pretty easy to grow so content with your surroundings that you don’t venture far from the villa. Believe it or not, the city has a very interesting past. Situated on Mexico’s Pacific coast, Puerto Vallarta’s is a story of modern economic prosperity – whalers, silver mining, fresh fruit exports, and today, tourism all help explain the city’s growth. The region’s cultural roots are deep, however, as a day trip to the Mascota region will show.

Some people believe that the first settlers in Puerto Vallarta migrated from Mascota, in the highlands, to the coast. A lush green agricultural region, Mascota lies approximately two hours inland from Puerto Vallarta. People of European descent have been living and working in this beautiful valley, which today is famous for the horses it produces, for more than four centuries. Horse lovers from all over Mexico travel to Mascota to purchase fine animals, and many bring their horses to the valley to be trained.

Europeans were not the first inhabitants in the Mascota area, situated in Jalisco’s western highlands. Ancient peoples who made their homes here left a vivid record of their lives and ceremonies carved in the rocks in the form of fascinating petroglyphs. Artifacts from their ceremonial sites and cemeteries also reveal the rich cultural heritage of the region. The region’s pre-history has made it the subject of serious archaeological research for many years; local treasures are housed in Mascota’s museum, a terrific collection of dolls, pottery and a lovely faceted gemstone.

It is possible to get a glimpse of Mascota’s past at the Mascota Museum and the Mascota Casa de Cultura. The museum represents the fond labors of Raoul Rodriguez, his personal collection. Much of his collection reflects modern Mascota, including mementos of Mascota native and film star Ester Fernandez, who filled the screen during Mexico’s Golden Age of Cinema. The collection also features the oil paintings of Mascota artist Gilberto Guerra. A half-block up the street, the Mascota Casa de Cultura houses a permanant exhibit of photographs that explore some of the 12,000 petroglyphs left by ancient inhabitants that pay homage to sun, water, and fertility.

It is very easy to get to Mascota from Puerto Vallarta, although it’s a very long day trip. Buses from town make the trip daily, or if you prefer, you can drive your own car on the newly finished road. For travellers with a taste for upscale adventures, it is possible to jump on a special charter flight and tour the entire region, including stops in San Sebastian, Talapa and Mascota.

When you finish your tour and you’re back in Puerto Vallarta, settle in for a pleasant night at your luxury rental villa. Relax on your private patio with an icy beverage and watch the sun set over Banderas Bay. If you’re still looking for the perfect villa rental, do a keyword search for villa rental Puerto Vallarta to find accommodations that suit you perfectly.

What is the meaning of Franz Marc’s Paintings ‘Large Blue Horses’ and ‘The Steer’?

Both oil on canvas with abstract colours. ‘The Steer’ is also known as The Bull. Does anyone have any ideas on what they symbolise/ represent?

Firstly, don’t say ‘abstract colors’ there is no such thing. There are two type of color depiction – one known as local color – where an artist tries to depict the true color of an object or a surface as seen in typical daylight; the other is expressive use of color – as in Marc’s paintings where he chooses any color that he wanted to express the atmosphere of the painting, his feeling towards the object he is painting, an idea he wanted to express. ie. Marc used color as an expressive means (didn’t use local color as I have described above).
In the case of both these animal paintings Marc wasn’t looking to express symbols, but to arrive at the the spirit of the animal as it appeared to him. I quote: Franz Marc devoted much of his artistic energy to creating images of horses and other animals. The allure of animals was not, for Marc, simply a formal or zoological interest, but stemmed from a deep fascination with the dynamic connection between animals, humans, and the natural world they shared. Longing to understand the spirit driving his own being, Marc looked to the horse in nature to perceive what he could not recognize in the human world. Through radical compositions and bold experiments with color, he strove to express the primary energy of the animals. http://www.walkerart.org/archive/4/AC73699A4A947C676161.htm]
Hope this is helpful.

Horse Lovers Can Now Get Their Own Horse T-shirt

Horses have been among the first animals domesticated by mankind; they played an important role in economy, transportation, agriculture and welfare, before the introduction of mechanization. Their significance in the history has been proved by the fact that many early religions and mythologies have depicted the horse as a prominent figure. Horses have also been portrayed in many works of art. For many of us, the image of wild horses running freely is an ideal image of freedom. These are only a few reasons why horses are still popular today. Many people love horses and would gladly wear a horse t-shirt to show their sympathy for these proud and beautiful animals.

Humans and horses have lived together for many years and a strong bond was created between them. A proof of this connection is the poll conducted by Animal Planet about the World’s Favorite Animal, which situated the horse on the 4th place (after the tiger, the dog and the dolphin). The horse is one of the 12 animals featured in the Chinese zodiac. Those who are born in the year of the Horse are believed to be intelligent, independent and free-spirited, qualities that are associated with the horse. If you are a horse lover, if horse riding is your favorite sport or you have always dreamed to have your own pony as a child, then you may fancy a horse t-shirt. There is a large variety of models available in the online shops so you can certainly find the right horse shirt for you.

When we buy clothes, we usually choose something that is fashionable and we feel comfortable in, something that suits our style and fits the image of ourselves that we want to show the world. For example, when choosing a shirt, there are many things that influence our choice, such as the color, the material, the print, the style (formal or casual) and of course, the price. Wearing a shirt in a bright color may enhance your optimism. For a little variety in your look, choose a printed T-shirt instead of a plain one. There are many awesome models which are suitable for different occasions. You can wear a horse shirt at a family dinner, but also on a night out with friends or on a romantic date.

The print of the shirt can be funny, inspirational or witty, according to your tastes. It will reflect your preferences and personality. Animal prints are fashionable and agreeable. Wearing a shirt with your favorite animal printed on it will increase your self-confidence, as you may identify yourself with certain positive features of the animal (like the Native Americans did with their totems). For instance, a horse t-shirt can set you in an adventurous and wild mood. If you have a friend who is keen on horses, consider giving him or her a printed t-shirt as a birthday present, or for any other occasion. Any true animal lover will appreciate a horse shirt that makes you feel like a cowboy riding on a prairie while wearing it.

For some people, horses are just animals that are used for leisure activities, working purposes or as a means of transportation (in poorer countries), while for others they are beloved companions. In many countries, horses compete in different sporting events and races, for recreational purposes. A less known fact about horses is that they can be used for therapeutic purposes. Horse riding has been proved to be beneficial for people with disabilities. Some therapies include horses as companions for people with psychological problems. As you can see, they are very special animals. Unfortunately for horse lovers, horses are scarce to find in a big city. Wearing a horse t-shirt, however, will make you feel more close to your favorite animal. For a wide offer of horse shirt models, try the Internet; you will find affordable and quality T-shirts in the online shops.

How do you take apart a plastic model horse without breaking it?

I have tried soaking it in hot water to melt the glue but that doesn’t seem to be the problem. It is attached inside with little plastic prongs. I want to get it apart to re-hair it. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you everyone for your great answers!

I hate to tell you this but the little plastic prongs are most likely glued with a plastic glue and they are now the strongest part of the model. There are ways to disassemble it but it will mess up the re hair part of the project.
Here’s what I would do. If you can get to the prongs you can cut them and then separate the parts. When you’re ready to reassemble lightly sand the area where the prongs where and reglue. It wont be quite as strong but it will hold. If when the prongs are cut they can’t be reglued you could add additional plastic strips on each half and glue to that. Wrap the model in some tape to hold when you reglue. Good luck and I hope this helps.

The English Horse Racing Classics – A Quick Guide

There is often much confusion as to what exactly are English Classic races and what are simply Group One races. The first aspect to remember is that there are five English Classic races and they are all carry Group One status, but due to the history of these races they carry a much higher prestige and status in the Racing world. The second point is that they are only open to three year old thoroughbred horses. The Five Classics are:

2000 Guineas

This is the opening Classic of the season and it is open to three year old colts and fillies. It is raced over the famous Rowley Mile at Newmarket and is a big test of speed, stamina and courage over an undulating straight course. Although it is open to fillies they very rarely run, they are normally entered for the 1000 Guineas (See below). For the colts it is also the first leg of the triple-crown; which is made up from the 2000 Guineas, the Epsom Derby and the St Leger. This year the race will be run on 2nd May, which is the opening day of the Guineas Festival.

1000 Guineas

The second Classic of the season, which is open to 3 year old thoroughbred fillies only and is also raced over Newmarket’s Rowley Mile. The race also forms the first leg of the Fillies triple-crown, which can be completed by winning this race, the Epsom Oaks and the St Leger. It is raced on the second day of the Guineas Festival, which this year will be 3rd May.

The Epsom Oaks

The third Classic is the Epsom Oaks, which like the 1000 Guineas is only open to 3 year old fillies. However this is raced on the Epsom Downs race course over a distance of 1 mile 4 furlongs in length. The Oaks forms the second leg of the Fillies Triple Crown and is one of the most valuable fillies only races in the world. This year it will be run on June 4th.

The Epsom Derby

The Derby is probably the most famous and prestigious race of the five English Classics and is renowned the World over. Although it is open to fillies as well as colts, it is rare for them to be entered, with the Fillies usually opting for the Epsom Oaks. Like the Oaks, it is run at Epsom Downs race course over a 1 mile 4 furlongs and forms the second leg of the colts triple crown. The race will take place this year on June 5th.

St Leger

The fifth and final Classic race of the season is the St Leger which is open to three year old colts and fillies and is raced at Doncaster race course over the longer distance of 1 mile 6 furlongs. It is a big test of stamina and often its winners stay in training for the following year. In some respects the St Leger has lost some of its importance, due mainly to its distance. The last colt to have won the Triple Crown was the great Nijinsky in 1970 and the last filly to have won the fillies version was Oh So Sharp in 1985. The St Leger takes place on 12th September.

The importance and prestige of the five classic races is underpinned by not only the prize money available to the winner of each races, all of which are well in to six figures (the prize money available for the Epsom Derby is £1.25 million) but also by the potential breeding values of the winning horses. Any horse that wins any of the classics will automatically increase in value at stud in the hope that they pass their winning genes on to future progeny.

Ask anyone to name the world’s most famous horse and the answer will most likely be Secretariat. His true story is still the stuff of legend. His astonishing 31-length victory in the Belmont Stakes, accomplished after winning the first two racing jewels in the Triple Crown, has yet to be repeated. In the Kentucky Derby, Secretariat set a speed record of 1:59 2/5, and he captured the Preakness Stak…

Picking Up The Best Horse Racing Betting System

In the next phrases I will show you how you can pick up the best horse racing betting system in order to create a method to make money online. From the multitude of sports bet I’ve chosen the most workable betting type which is the horse racing betting. As in any field, there are betting methods that are good, but others that are going to take your money. Despite all of that there are few successful betting systems in the area of horse betting. In the following phrases I will make a review of things you should do in order to find the best betting system possible. I did them and it gave me the success I need it to win.

I will tell you that before choosing the system I read all the horse racing papers and magazines. I went through all the websites and I found few of them which gave me lot of interesting and helping stuff. If you get a clear picture about horse betting and racing you will have the ability to pick up the winner and most of all you will get the skill to choose the best betting system.

One of the most important criteria when it’s about choosing the horse betting system is the last race horse outcome. It is possible, for a horse with wick results in its last course, to make a good figure next time when it runs. The horse can really have a breakthrough performance in that day.

Every time there is a chances table. Stay focused on this one. It could happen for chances to be suddenly changed. That means some of the gamblers put their bet on a horse which might have an incredible performance. The betting system you choose has to be able to show you that. This type of system which uses software to show you this, it is way beyond the systems where you manually have to calculate this. It prevents the mistakes that can manually be done and you earn time.

A software betting system will take into consideration all the information and data when it’s about picking the right horse. But pay attention to these type of systems. Lots of them are just to provide a rapid and easy income for the producer only. Search a review for every system you want to pick up. Someone else might already achieved the system and will give feedback.

Search for the experienced and successful gamblers posts, blogs and so on in order to have a good advice about a system. They are already using the best horse racing betting systems.

If you would like to know more about using an automated horse racing betting system, that will show you the route to take by an experienced punter, then visithttp://www.besthorseracingbettingsystem.info.

how does the american horse racing style/position differ from other places ie aussie/nz?

iv heard the style is differnt from the nz/aussie position/style.Iv seen the races as well and it does look different,i just cant figure out why though.

a lot of american racing is done on dirt… were oz and nz is mostly on turf,
some states in america allow some drugs (steriods) (assex) those substances are banned in oz and nz,
american jockeys ride a litte different to……. EXAMPLE, kent dourmasoux the jockey for big brown recently in the kentucky derby, the preakness and the belmont stakes sat 3 and 4 wide the whole race, those kind of riding tactics are un heard of in oz and nz, if that was blake shinn or corey brown they would get an a*rse kicking!

Pony and Horse Color Explained (or ‘Horse Colour Explained’, depending on where you are from )

There are many horses colours and pony colours and this horse colour chart explains the basic colors and also a few more unusual horse coat colours.

Did you know?!

The coat colour of your horse or pony can tell you what colour they are. If you are not sure what color your horse or pony really is, have a look at the colour of the ‘points’.

The ‘points’ of your horse are the muzzle, tips of the ears, the mane, the tail, and the lower part of the legs. Remember they could have white markings on some of these points that may trick you!

The colours of horses include:

Black: black all over including the points, mane and tail. Look at the colour of the muzzle – it will be black. In this horse colour your horse or pony will not have brown around the muzzle!

Brindle: this rare horses colouring has drippy striping that is not regularly spaced on the horses coat, and brindle horses often have a vertical flank striping. Brindle horses are unlike other colour of horses and once seen are not forgotten!

Brown: brown or dark brown all over, sometimes nearly black. The colour of the muzzle tells you they are brown even if the mane and tail and legs are black.

Bay: a light brown or a red brown colour with black points and black mane and tail. This is a common horse color that is often call ‘brown’ by someone who is not familiar with horses.

Chestnut: a ginger or yellow brown colour. The points of the horse are brown – similar to the coat colour or lighter. Chestnuts are never black.

Grey: a mixture of black and white hairs. Variations of grey include: ‘dapple grey’ when there are more black hairs than white; ‘light grey’ when there are more white hairs than black; and ‘flea-bitten’ has flecks of black or brown hairs on a white coat. The foal colours in grey horses and ponies vary. They are often born much darker and become lighter as they get older.

Piebald: large patches of black and white. This is a horse coat colour that has different names in different areas of the world. This equine colour can also be called paint or pinto

Skewbald: large patches of any other colour than black and white. This is another colour in a horse that has different names in different areas of the world. This equine color can also be called paint or pinto

Palamino: Golden yellow coat, (ideally the colour of a newly minted gold coin) with a white mane and tail. This one is my favourite pony color!

Appaloosa: spotted coat mostly either brown spots on a white coat or white spots as a blanket on a brown coat. This is another horse color where the foal colour can be different at birth, and some are born with no appaloosa markings.

Dun: mousey brown to golden yellow with black points, mane and tail.

Blue roan: white hairs through a mostly black or dark brown coat. The points are black.

Red roan: white hairs through a bay coat. The points are black.

Strawberry roan: white hairs through a chestnut coat. The points are the same as a chestnut horse.

The horse colorings of grey horses and roan horses are often confused, but the roan has a solid color head and legs. Roan foals are born roan, while grey or gray horses are often born much darker and grow more grey hairs as they grow older

My horses tail became short little by little? I have lose goats running around could they be the problem?

I have 3 horses and one them lost his long tail little by little. I looked every where for signs of what might of happen. I still dont have an answer. I have goats running around and i was told goats like to eat it, but why only one horse and its cut off all the way to its bone pretty high off the ground. I also have not deworm him in 3 1/2 months could this be it?

Yep that could very well be it i have horses also and some of the goats and cows do it to my horses or it even could be another one of the horses
