Horses – Nuts about Cobs

No matter what level you compete at or what type of horse you favour, there is one type that has universal appeal, and that is the cob.  They’re the horse that puts a smile on your face, whether you’re looking for a showing star, a riding club all-rounder, a horse who can find a fifth leg out hunting or a partner for the lower levels of affiliated dressage and show jumping.

Cobs are chunky, cheeky and addictive. Whatever you do, there’s a cob to suit, whether it’s the strimmed and trimmed show variety or one with flowing mane, tail and feathers. With the exception of the Welsh section D or Welsh Cob, which is a breed, cobs are a type. They originated as relatively small, workmanlike horses who could pull a trap to market one day and carry a rider out hunting the next and it’s this versatility that helps make them so popular.

Definitions

A show cob in the classic sense is a deep-bodied horse with relatively short legs and plenty of bone. They can be lightweight and able to carry up to 14st or heavyweight and able to carry more than 14st.  In both cases they should exceed 148cm but not be over 155cm.  Traditionally, it’s shown with a hogged mane to display its powerful neck.

Show cobs

Avril Bartolomy bought her first show cob, Miss Minnie, by chance. At the time, she didn’t even know what a show cob was; now, Avril is one of the most successful and popular amateur competitors on the circuit and in the nicest possible way, a true cob nut.
She and her husband, Robin, have seven cobs at their Sussex home, ranging from the prolific winning maxi cob, Clantara Shadow Play, to a home-bred coloured youngster, Simply The Best — known as Tina. Both Tina and another maxi cob in the Bartolomy string, Robert The Bruce, are out of Miss Minnie, so Avril has a lot to thank the mare for.

It all began about 15 years ago when she wanted a dapple grey cob to hack in Ashdown Forest.  “I looked in the paper and there was an advert for just the right one,” she recalls.
Although she had ridden for many years, Avril decided she needed to brush up her skills and went to the multi-talented Ali Remmen — show jumper, course-builder and trainer — for help. Ali told her that Minnie would make a nice show cob.  “My first reaction was: ‘And just what is a show cob?’” remembers Avril.

Minnie took her all the way to what is now the British Show Horse Association’s national championships and after retiring from the show ring, produced three foals. Avril continues not only to compete against and often beat the professionals with the established Clantara Shadow Play and her coloured lightweight, Benetton, but also produces her horses from home, with Robin’s help.  “I’ve always gone for the cob type, even before I started showing,” she says. “They tend to be sensible and sane and have plenty of character, but no badness. ‘Benny’ is the naughtiest cob out and will take another horse’s rug off over the fence. But I love him to bits. He’s a real showman and a pleasure to own. I couldn’t manage without Robin’s help. He hacks out with me, but I can’t get him into the ring.”

Avril believes that if you want to succeed with a young show cob, you have to put in time and patience. “Compared to other types, they’re slow to mature and take longer to produce,” she says. “I don’t think they’re as naturally flexible as, say, a Thoroughbred and it takes time to get them off their forehand. I don’t spend a lot of time in the school, but we do a lot of hillwork.”
Another attraction of cobs is that if you have an eye for the right type, you can spot a potential star many people would pass by. This is what happened with Benetton, though Avril insists that she was lucky.  “He was in a local dealer’s yard,” she says. “Someone had asked for a cob and decided when they saw him that he didn’t move well enough. He certainly does now, so their loss was my gain!”

“For our society, the only difference between a traditional cob and a show cob is a mane, tail and feathers,” says Lynda Lodge, chairman of the British Skewbald and Piebald Association.

However, Jacquie Bland, who owns Paintball Gypsy Cobs in Cumbria, says they tend to be shorter in the neck with a higher knee action than mainstream show cobs. As well as having their own societies — the Traditional Gypsy Cob Association holds its second annual show at The College, Bedfordshire, in September — they have plenty of devotees.

Welsh cobs
Meirion Jones is as Welsh as his name suggests, but his passion for breeding Welsh Cobs has its roots in America as well as north Wales, home of his Machno Stud.
“My parents and grandparents both had Welsh Cobs, so I grew up with them,” he says. “When I was 17 I went to work in the USA, first on a ranch in Wyoming, then in St Louis with Clydesdales for Budweiser and polo ponies. Everyone said Welsh blood was the foundation for good working stock.”

Meirion’s aim has always been to breed sport ponies and he believes the Welsh breeds can do everything and anything.  “Good ones are athletic and also easy keepers — what more can you ask?” he says. “They also have character and presence.”  His aim is to breed the Ferraris of the sport pony world and his stallions and mares are chosen with that in mind. At the same time, he’s strict about only having ponies with good temperaments and native hardiness.  “There are no bad characters here,” he says.

How can I make my horses mane and tail thicker?

When I bought this horse her mane and tail looked very thin. Does anyone know how to make it thicker ? ?

believe it or not, they actallu make hair extensions for horses now…i’m sure you culd add them to make the hair thicker. My horse has thin hair (her forelock is basically a wisp of hair), and I LOVE how manageable it is! So much easier to comb and get burrs out of etc…so you may want to consider that. Also I have never tried it, but you could try “teasing” (backcombing) the hairs which people do to make thier hair have more volume…but be carefull that you dont damage the hair in teh process! For my horse, i use Show Sheen on her hair and make it sleek and shiny and that looks fine….

EDIT: also look for supplements for hair (they usually are to make the hair shiny but there may be one to help hair growth…) and make sure it gets all teh nutrition it needs!

why do i see so many girls with really bad hair extensions!?

I don’t have anything against hair extensions in general in fact i have had some myself, but i seem to be seeing loads of girls with really bad extensions lately. They look awful, matted, dry etc i thought the point was for them to look real not like you spent all day cutting hair off a horse and gluing it to your scalp!?
you can buy clip in extensions made with human hair for £30 – £40 not that much more than synthetic hair. Would’nt it be better to go natural if you cant afford good ones than to go out looking like you just had a fight in a hedge!?

Honestly I don’t think I’ve ever seen any extensions that look good (probably cause if they were good extensions I wouldn’t notice them) and that whole thing where they’re just two piece of hair hanging down either side of the head is a really odd look. When I was a little girl, my father used to take me to the sea. This was not just any ordinary visit, we had to make sure it was the fourteenth night of the moon, so I counted all I could on my little fingers that the moon would come faster, but the moon only came when it will. He brought her all the right gifts, on all the right birthdays, took her as a princess on those sun-died days. I know that my father bought me the white horse I couldn’t get my eyes off of, the one that had a magical carriage behind it, so it could trail behind the horse like the magic that is dust-shine behind Cinderella’s pumpkin-carriage.

He got it for me, not caring it was expensive, or inappropriate. [I mean, it was a horse, with a golden mane, and a fierce blue red light on its forehead, it struck me then, it was an ordinary horse that could become a unicorn at will, upon a lighted touch.] It was important for me, his little girl, and he made sure I had it. Just like he made sure I had silver earrings, matching shoes, and an exquisite bracelet.

When one grows older, these things shouldn’t slip off our minds, like old shoes. It is so important an hour for a father. He is going to miss this for the rest of his life.

I think between fathers and daughters, is a sacred trust – but I also think, if this trust doesn’t reach its own avenues of beauty, and change shape over the years, then the life that is lived, will be lost to the life that could have been lived. In my case, it was my poetry that did it. When I had my book of poems ready, I called my father after several months of agitated absence and said: “Abu now I am like you, I’m an entrepreneur too. I wrote my book, it’s a risk I took on life, just like you.”

Little girls want to be like their fathers too, it’s not just the boys that harbor this desire. I was a poet to the moon, he was a sketcher of graphs that made sense to no one but himself. We did have a meeting point, it’s just that it took us several years to realize this. A woman in love, is altogether a mystery to a father, he approaches it like someone coming near mysterious white birds on the Karachi sea, that will disappear the moment he says “Can I sit here with you?” The sea is lost, it’s uncertain, it’s always present. This is what I am to you, father, is it not. It’s what you are to me, as well. It’s what you are to the white bird, the sky on the Karachi retreat, to Bali’s haunting voice that keeps singing, over all of my life and yours. He is with us as well.

Abu didn’t realize I was going to be Bali for him, when I grew up. He didn’t see it coming, but friends like metamorphosis on Greek nymphs, can take place anywhere. We are to be friends, I just know it.

At the lower levels of competition the rider can choose between a black or brown colored saddle and they have the option of using a dressage saddle or a dressage saddle. Under the saddle their should be a saddle blanket, the blanket can be black or white and be either a square cut or can be shaped to follow the line of the saddle.

Once a rider has reached the upper levels of dressage competition their are a few subtle changes in their show attire. FEI rules require that they wear a pair of white britches. Hunt coats are no longer allowed, riders are required to wear the longer, more elegant shad belly. Although their is no rule banning the wearing of a helmet most riders choose to wear a derby style hat. Black gloves are replaced with white gloves.

Just like the riders show clothing there are some changes made in the horses tack. I put my horses in a boarding facility, I’ve boarded there before though, and one of my horses had a huge chunk chewed out of her mane. My other horse has about half of his tail left.

I’ve used stuff called MTG by Shapleys. It doesn’t smell wonderful (maybe use latex gloves when applying it) but it definitely helped with the growth process. However, some horses can be allergic to it so only try a little bit on a small section the first time. Apply starting at the roots/tailbone and work it through the rest of the tail. Same for the mane. After applying it to the tail, braid and put the tail in a tail bag.

How can I get my horses mane and tail to grow long and thick?

She’s a five year old paint, stall kept and has a long mane (to the bottom of the neck), but its pretty thin, and not very flowy. Her tail is dirty from the winter, and nearly impossible to brush, and extremely grimy. Is there a way to wash it without a wash rack (its still cold here)? Any advice would be helpful.

You could take a bucket of warm water and some horse shampoo to her tail to help with the grime. To help grow her tail, get a tail bag and braid it. This helps the tail stay protected as well as helping it grow.

Have you ever hitched? Of course we are not talking about the art of sticking your thumb out to catch a ride. Hitching does involve a ride of another kind, a horse. Hitching involves the use of horsehair. A hitcher will start with each hair and combining each strand of hair together, create the desired results. Very much the same as construction of a rope, hitching is done by hand and requires much patience. Twisting the hair into a strand and then again into a larger design can take many, many hours. The art of hitching dates back to Spain in the 8th century, and was brought over to America by the early Spaniards. Many early American hitchers were actually prisoners in western prisons. Of course it is amazing how much patience one has when locked in Yuma Territorial Prison for a 5-7 year vacation.

By now a cowboy tradition of the west, hitching can be found in the form of hatbands, belts, horse bridles and many other forms. Many pieces will often take hundreds of hours of hand made work to complete. Some will incorporate differing colors and designs, this being accomplished by the dyeing of the hair.
