Keeping Your Dog from Chewing: Kuranda Dog Beds

Got a precious doggie who loves to gnaw on his bed to the point of no recognition — and then look at you with these big eyes asking “where do I sleep now?”  Kuranda USA offers a patented solution for your rambunctious pooch!

The Kuranda dog bed sports a patented design featuring a protective poly resin or aluminum sleeve which is also the frame that the fabric slides into.  This protective sleeve leaves no corner gaps or fabric exposed so there is nothing to chew…or so the dog owner thinks.  There are times when a persistent chewer will work his way from the fabric, which is inaccessible, to the corners.  There they will meet up with reinforced PVC corners that can stand up to some of the most persistent chewers but in the rare instance they don’t a one year ‘chew proof’ guarantee comes standard with each bed. Kuranda guarantees the structural integrity of the frames and any or all parts will be replaced including corners and legs even the 40 oz. Vinyl and Cordura fabrics are guaranteed for one full year.  

With three excellent choices in materials to choose from how does one decide?  There are advantages to each fabric.  First, the vinyl weave is likened to the fabric used in patio furniture; it is breathable and allows water to drip through it.  This feature alone allows it to stay cooler than the other two fabrics. However, there is always a catch, it is the least durable and is not recommended for jumping, chewing or rough housing dogs.  Cordura is a tough nylon canvas that is similar to the fabric used for horse blankets and backpacks.  Cordura fabric is twice as durable as the vinyl weave however, it is not porous so water will puddle on this bed and it does not breathe.  Then we have the 40 oz. vinyl which is the most durable and highly recommended for the digger, scratcher, chewer in your life!  This sturdy fabric is thick and smooth with a very easy to clean surface.  It like Cordura will not breathe and will puddle if rained on.    
So has Chomper met his match?  Kuranda dog beds are cot style beds that lift your precious pet off the ground between six to nine inches depending on the size of the bed.  Many people are perplexed about which frame to get aluminum or poly resin?  The answer to that question depends on the dog.  The aluminum bed is the strongest and most durable especially for kennels, doggie day spas or veterinarian offices.  The around the home dogs will be more than pleased on either the poly-resin or the aluminum beds.  Kuranda also offers wooden framed dog beds which are nice looking and quite comfortable but are strongly not recommended for chewing dogs or for outdoor use.  

Because Kuranda dog beds are cot style there is a space beneath the bed which helps keep his sleeping space sanitary.  Oh that reminds me I haven’t mentioned how to care and maintain the Kuranda dog bed.  Convenience is the name of the came for care and maintenance simply  hose it down, little soap and water for any persistent stains and the bed is back in action.  Kennels and Veterinarian offices swear by the convenience and durability of this extremely functional, durable and innovative pet bed.

Would this be safe for jumping?

I was wondering if it was safe to use pvc pipes for poles when jumping your horse, I know some people use them to jump, and others use wood covered in pvc piping, or just use plain old wood. But wouldn’t the piping shatter on impact?

This is entirely dependent on your situation and experience. I personally do use PVC poles with caps, but I am very sure of my horses abilities and contentious when moving them up. I chose PVC specifically because I have to move my poles often and alone so I wanted something light. Wood is better, it lasts longer and won’t break and hurt the horse if there is an accident. PVC will shatter and could injure a clumsy horse or a horse with a clumsy rider. So you have to make a judgement call on it. I have never had any problem with PVC poles, they work fine, are easy to handle, and hold paint pretty well with a proper primer, but have heard that if a horse falls on it, then you have a problem.

Riding my horse bareback?

So I have a kind of nervous horse. I’d really like to be able to ride her bareback, but she is pretty nervous and I don’t think I’d be able to just hop on with no saddle (I’m definitely only going to ride her bareback with my trainer.) Does anyone know how I can get her used to bareback riding? Is there a training technique? Any tips are greatly appreciated!!!!

Well, don’t do any fancy mount or anything (no brainer) but just start out sitting on her, if she is uneasy, don’t sit on her to long, but just mount, dismount and remount tons of times until she is comfortable with you on her back without a saddle.
Then, start with a walk, and do the same thing, mount, dismount and mount again-then ask her to walk foreward a couple of paces before you get off, then work your way up to higher gaits and do the same thing.

I measured my head and it’s 22 inches……..so what size helmet do i need in a Troxel spirit riding helmet ? Because someone is selling one and they said it’s a size small….would that be the right size for my head? I know i have to check and make sure it’s not stretched out or anything…..but if it’s nice, would it be the right size for me? lol i want to make sure before i buy 1….and in general, what helmet size would i need (6 and a half or what) there are so many different terms for the sizes and it’s really cunfusing!!!! help please? =}

Here’s a tip, go out to your local tack store and try some helmets on! All helmets are sized differently, much like shoes, so it’d be hard to tell you what size you would need. I wear a medium in my Troxel, but when I try on other brands medium is sometimes too big/small. So just go and try on some helmets at the tack store, you might also find you enjoy another brand better.

Does anyone know where I can get this horse riding hat/helmet???

Recently when at a local showjumping competition, I saw a rider with this really nice riding hat/helmet. It was grey, and like some of the other hats that have the silver strip through the middle of the hat/helmet, the hat had one too. Except it was a baby pink colour.
I would REALLY like to know where I can get this helmet, because I REALLY liked it and have been dying to find it for months!!

I have a qustion about horse boots…

Soaking boots- boot to soak your horse’s hoof for abscesses and other inflammations (it’s just easier than keeping the horses foot in a bucket) you usually add epson salt along with warm water into the boot or bucket.

wraps – wraps can be used for different purposes such as for travel in a trailer so the horse doesn’t get cuts on their legs etc. different types of wraps can be used for medical care as well to keep bandages on cuts, etc.

ankle boots – ankle boots protect the ankle from getting sliced by the other hind foot or shoe. If you horse is doing a lot of galloping and jumping, etc

hock wraps – hock wraps are used for injury wrapping or icing the hock

front boots – well, depending on what your talking about they could be boots for trail riding that actually go on the hoof if a horse is shoeless and tender it is always a plus) or for eventing front boots that go around the tendons are just to protect them.

hind boots – basically the same as I wrote for front boots.

sport boots – sport boots do the same, preventing injury and support/protecting the tendons in the horses lower legs if jumping, galloping, etc.

bell boots-these prevent tearing off the shoe of a front hoof when a horse with shoes on over reaches which could cause clipping or pulling the shoe off. trust me this has happened numerous times with my mare and when ever I go galloping or jumping I use them.

ice wraps- to ice the area, keep down swelling of an area, etc.

Horse Jumps What Are They Composed Of

Horse jumps are the equipment used to set up jumping courses either in a show ring or on a trail. The abilities of horse and rider are both challenged. A beauteous animal jumps over a fence and you want to make sure he can clear it and land safely on the other side. Buy your jumping equipment from reputable manufacturer for safety sake.

In addition to safety, the cost of the jumps and accessories are important. Some companies guarantee a low price and will meet or beat their competition s prices. As long as the buyer gets the same quality, of course he is delighted to pay less.

It is of the utmost importance to buy quality equipment. Wood or PVC, a man made type of plastic material, is used to build the jumps. Horse show planners consider PVC superior in many ways. It cannot rot like wood. It is long lasting and can be left out in inclement weather. It is very durable.

The PVC material itself is more expensive to begin with, but the manufacturing methods are superior to those used with wood. This keeps the price of the finished product lower. Therefore it is preferable.

There are many things about this industry that the average person does not know. There are a variety of types of jumps. Cavalletti jumps are used in dressage exhibitions. The horses trained for dressage, also known as dancing, are different than those used for Western trail competitions for example. Those jumps are similar to natural things found on trail rides, such as logs.

Horse show planners know the specifications for each type of jump. A beginner may want to set up a few low jumps to learn with. You can set of your own jumps if you are cautious. Make sure no nails or sharp protrusions exist in the material you use. Try a cross rail jump with two poles of an upright fence meeting at a cross in the center. This trains the horse to aim his body at the center of all jumps.

A pyramid jump and oxer jump are two other types. Any combination of two or three jumps in a row requires careful measurement of not only the height but the distance between the jumps as measured in strides. An upright fence must be correctly spaces as it is a difficult jump.

Measure the distance between jumps at approximately twelve feet for a horse or ten feet for a pony. Alternatively, you can measure your own horse s exact stride. Use a tape measure and set up the distance between jumps according to your horse.

Never place a pole behind any jump. This will confuse your horse greatly. By creating a false ground line, it makes the horse see the jump as being further back than it is. The judgement of the horse is crucial to avoid jumping being a dangerous activity.

Open water jumps must conform to specific size regulations for different courses. The jumps can be purchased individually or in packages to be set up on site in various ways. There are also additional accessories that include extra rails, cups, wings and flower boxes to create an attractive jumping course with. Although appearance is not the primary consideration, it definitely enhances the look at any horse show.

Horse jumps bring joy to the people watching these magnificent equine competitions. They may or may not appreciate the work and training behind the acquired skills, but they certainly derive pleasure from watching how gracefully they do it. The beauty of the horses is enhanced by an attractive show ring as well.

Help teaching horse to move from pressure when backing up?

I have a horse that has never been trained to take pressure downward (to back up, collect, etc) from a bit. He can be checked up both sides, but when backing up he tosses his head crazily (dangerous) and really cannot stand it. I just started working with him on it.. I’ve been backing up and releasing and patting and working on the ground. Please if you have any other suggestions please do help..any equipment suggestions?

Ok ( : here is how you go about this! I had the same problem with my horse, resiting the bit, throwing his head, and being a total idiot! So my trainer told me maybe I am using too much rein and I should stop pulling but when they are good release. Once you get them doing what you want release. Now back to the problem! First Of all… do a circle in a walk say ‘woop’ or “hoe” to get him to stop cues are very inportant when teaching a horse to back. Once he is at the halt don’t stop keep the horses mind working or he will get bored. Ask him to back by pulling straight back with both of your reins and squeeze with your legs. While he is doing that keep saying “back” and when he does release presure and ask him right back into the walk stop again back and say “Good Boy” and pat him! !!!TIP!!! Never end the training backing the horse trot more and then cool out.
