WALL-E, My Touching Story

One of The Disney Classic Collection WALL-E is a lonely little robotic trash compactor who was left behind after Earth was abandoned some 700 years earlier. He has been methodically cleaning up the trash-ridden planet ever since, and harboring a tiny plant he has found among the garbage. Eve, meanwhile, lives on the immense spaceship Axiom, which is also home to the fat, blob-like remains of the human race. She is a probe robot that flies to Earth to determine if the planet is ready for habitation. WALL-E takes one look at the streamlined, angelic Eve and falls in love.

For adults, WALL-E is not so much about a cute little robot as it is about the future of man. What happens when humans become such creatures of the consumer culture, so fat they can’t even stand up without assistance, living literally on auto-pilot, that they do nothing but buy cheap merchandise, stuff their faces at the Regurgitated Food Buffet and lie around watching video screens? Can they ever get back to the land and set their souls free?

The Disney Classic WALL-E left us these questions.

WALL-E has so many admirable touches! After the little apprentice is answerable application his solar panels, he “turns on” with a complete any Macintosh buyer will recognize. The robot’s calm objects, abundant like the thingamabobs of The Little Mermaid’s Ariel, are things that are abnormally human: balloon wrap, an iPod, a Rubics cube, a singing artificial bays angle and — blink and you’ll absence it — a carrousel horse from Walt Disney World. Especially aggressive are the two things on this approaching Earth that are absolutely indestructible.

Im thinking about the games
Horse Trainer
My Horse & Me

But I wanna know your opinions on it or if you reccommend a different one.

Hmmm, I have My Horse And Me for the WII, but I don’t know if it’s the same for the DS, but I like it a lot, I think it’s fun. I have never heard of Horse Trainer, so I don’t know about that one. I also have these horse games that I think are fun: Petz horses 2 and Horse Life. One new game that looks fun is Ener-g Horse Riders.

Self Portrait stands as a truly perverse collection. Released in 1970 at a time when those on the radical left were hungering for their then-unimpeachable hero to reclaim his role as the conscience of his generation, Bob Dylan instead delivered a pop-inflected collection largely made up of rather indifferently performed covers.
13 Things Not to Do at the Races – Followed by 8 Things to Do!

1. Don’t bet after heavy drinking

2. Don’t bet after heavy rain

3. Don’t bet on races with little exposed form

4. Don’t bet if your horse has a bad draw in a sprint race

5. Don’t try to chase your losses

6. Don’t think you have to have a bet in every race

7. Don’t back trainers and jockeys out of form

8. Don’t back horses that have not had a recent run

9. Don’t use just one bookmaker. Check all prices on offer including the tote

10. Don’t take your credit card to the races. Set aside a separate betting bank

11. Don’t forget to check the paddock to make sure your horse is fit

12. Don’t forget to compile your own betting forecast and only bet if you find value odds on your chosen selection

13. Don’t forget to keep multiple bets to a minimum and if you must keep stakes low.

Some things you should do at the races

1. Pay particular attention to C+D winners

2. In big handicap races rather than back 1 horse each way back 2 or even 3 horses

3. Make sure your selection acts on the going

4. Keep an eye on Tony McCoy’s mounts during the summer NH season. He is even better in the summer season

5. Take note of heavily backed horses at the big meetings (especially if they have halved in price)

6. Always keep a record of you bets. We can provide you with results sheets if you need them. Just ask and we will provide them for free

7. Stick to unraveling 2 or 3 races a day rather than than trying to plow through the form of every race.

8. Remember no bet is a certainty

Horse Blankets…?

I have a horse that stands in the rain all the time and is always soaked. Im looking for a blanket that is VERY water proof and has a hood (preferable attached). I just cant seem to find a brand that makes this for in the stall, not a rain sheet for cover by the ringside. Any ideas…

I’m a big fan of Weatherbeeta blankets and they are much more affordable than Rambo or Buccas. The Orican, Arion or Taka line rainsheets from Weatherbeeta are great and come with hoods that are attached or you can get them separately. Check out Dover Saddlery, Stateline, etc. I have heard that the Rider’s brand of blankets from Dover isn’t bad too. I usually stick to name brands that I trust and always buy 1000+ denier, waterproof and breathable. I also like to retreat my turnout blankets and sheets with Scotchguard once a year – usually after I get them washed and ready for the next season.

WHAT IS MOBILE ELBOW?

The mobile elbow results from using the mobile for long hours. Called the ‘cubital tunnel syndrome’, it is also called cell phone elbow’. The problem occurs when the ulnar nerve, which runs across the elbow, down to the ring and little fingers, gets over-stretched and blood supply is restricted, sparked by holding a phone to the ear for long periods.

WHY DOES STEEL GLOW WHEN IT’S HOT?

Hot steel glows red when hot because its atoms vibrate with a lot of energy. The amount of energy varies in atoms re- sulting in a range of colours.

WHAT DOES JANUARY MEAN?

The original Roman calendar had 10 named months from March to December and two unnamed months during winter. These two months were named January and February by Numa Pompilius, the second king of Rome circa 700 BC. January is named after Janus, the Roman ‘god of gates, doors and the beginnings’.

WHAT’S THE AAFBAU PRINCIPLE?

The physical and chemical properties of elements are determined by the atomic structure. This, in turn, is determined by electrons and the shells, sub-shells and orbitals they reside in. The rules of placing electrons within shells is known as the Aafbau principle, which originally means ‘building up’.

WHY DOES THE JASMINE BLOOM ONLY AT NIGHT?

Like all other flowering plants, jasmine also produces a flower inducing hormone in its leaves when exposed to bright sunlight. This hormone is called florigen (flower-generating hormone) and it migrates from the leaves to flowering shoots during the day. It accumulates in the flowering shoots of the jasmine plant and induces flowering during the night.

WHAT IS A ROMAN CIRCUS?

It was an open air stadium used for public events in the Roman empire, empire. The events usually held in such a circus were chariot and horse races and performances commemorating historical events.
WHAT DOES THE PHRASE ‘CHICKEN OUT’ MEAN?

To chicken out is to stop doing something because of fear or lose courage while doing something. Sometimes, it is also used to ask a person, “Are you chicken?” or even as “Jack chickened out…” The chicken is a timid bird, which also gave rise to ‘chicken-hearted’.

WHAT IS CONTACT SCRAPING?

Social networking has brought about a new trend called contact scraping, where an online company with access to a person’s mail account goes through the contact list and sends out an invitation to all to join the site. Once a person enters his/her credentials, like user name or password, the company sweeps through the contact list. The company gets free publicity and widens its user base, but could put the person concerned in an embarrassing and annoying situation, especially when there are friendly mails from strangers in return.

HOW ARE DEEMED UNIVERSITIES DIFFERENT FROM OTHERS?

Ordinary universities are officially approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India as per the latter’s guidelines for the universities’ overall supervision and administration. ‘Deemed university’ is a term indicative of status of autonomy granted to high performing institutes and departments of various universities. Such status enables deemed universities not only full autonomy in setting course work, syllabus and research centres, but also allows it to set it’s own guidelines for admission, fee and instructions to students. Parent universities have no control over deemed universities in matters of overall administration.

WHY IS SEA WATER VERY HIGH IN SALT CONTENT?

The average salinity of sea water is about 3.5%. One cubic mile of sea water contains 166 million tonne of salt. The salts of the sea come from the breaking up of rocks and gradual wearing away of mountains releasing salts that are washed down by rainwater. It is estimated that more than 400 million tonne of dissolved salts are brought to the sea every year by 27,000 cubic km of water. The second source of salt is rocks beneath the ocean bed. There has been a constant slow addition of sea salinity due to evaporation from the ocean surface, combined by discharge from land.

WHAT IS A CHEMICAL BOND? HOW IS IT FORMED?

A chemical bond is one in which atoms of different or same elements combine to become stable. There are two types of chemical bonds —electro-valent bond and covalent bond. In an electrovalent bond, a metal donates an electron to a non-metal and forms the bond. Such bonds are very strong. A covalent bond is formed between non-metals only. These are easy to break.

WHY DON’T THE TEETH OF ANIMALS DECAY THOUGH THEY NEVER BRUSH THEIR TEETH?

According to WHO, decaying of teeth is a localized, post-eruptive pathologic external process, involving hard tooth tissue and formation of cavities. There is demineralization of teeth by acids produced in the oral environment, due to action of oral acidogenic bacteria on carbohydrates found in cooked food and drinks. Animals are either herbivorous or carnivorous or both, and survive on uncooked, raw food, rich in fibre, which needs a lot of chewing to digest, thereby cleansing the teeth naturally It is like brushing teeth and massaging gums the natural way But tooth decay is common in pets like dogs, which eat cooked food and junk food like biscuits etc.

WHAT IS THE GOLDEN ANGLE?

The golden angle separates the florets of a sunflower. Ills an approximation, since three golden arcs add up to slightly more than enough to make a circle. One of the old leaves overlaps and is pushed out in a radial line. This makes space in the inner system for a new leaf to form. New leaves move into the spaces opened as old leaves diverge.

WHAT IS A BLACK BLIZZARD?

During the drought of the 1930s in America, with no natural anchors in place, the soil dried, turned to dust and blew eastward and southward in large dark clouds. They blackened the sky and reached all the way to East Coast cities such as New York and Washington DC. Much of the soil ended up as deposits in the Atlantic Ocean, and were called ‘Black Blizzards’ and ‘Black Rollers’, and reduced visibility to a few feet. The Dust Bowl or Dirty Thirties —1930-36 and even up till 1940 — were caused by drought and decades of extensive farming without crop rotation.

WHY DO NEWSPAPERS PRINT A COMBINATION OF FOUR DOTS —BLUE, PINK, YELLOW, BLACK— AT THE BOTTOM OF EACH PAGE

The four dots — blue (cyan), pink (magenta), yellow and black are registration marks used during printing to help ensure the print is aligned properly In offset printing technology which newspapers use, the inked image is transferred from a plate to a rubber blanket, then to the printing surface. These primary colours go into printing a multi-coloured image and have separate plates. Each plate has its individual mark, like the colour dot.

WHAT IS THIGMOTROPISM?

Thigmotropism is the growth of a plant around a support. Tropism is a phenomena by which a plant, usually climber like money plant and ivy, responds to a stimulus. Stems of the pea plant, for instance, are weak and have coil-like structures called tendrils. When tendrils approach a support (stick), a phytohormone called auxin is released in the side of the tendril away from the support. Auxin, a growth hormone, elongates the cells of that portion and makes it strong. The other portion, devoid of auxin, becomes weak and coils around the support.

WHY DO THE EYES OF SOME ANIMALS GLOW IN THE DARK?

Some animals have a special, reflective surface right behind their retinas, called the tapeturn lucidum, which helps animals see better in the dark. When light enters the eye, it hits a photoreceptor that transmits the information to the brain. But sometimes light doesn’t hit the photoreceptor, so the tapetum lucidum acts as a mirror to bounce it back for a second chance.

WHY DON’T WE FEEL THE TONES OF ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE?

Atmospheric pressure, which is about 1 kg per’sqcm of area, presses down on our body from all sides, but we don’t feel it as it is balanced by fluid pressure from inside our body We can feel the difference during rainy season or when we go. to places where atmospheric pressure is less, like hill stations, where due to higher fluid pressure, blood oozes out in blood vessels, making the skin over those pink. The reverse happens under water.

Many small spiders use silk threads for ballooning, the scientific term for the dynamic kiting spiderlings (mostly) used for dispersal. They extrude several threads into the air and let themselves get carried away with upward winds.

WHAT IS A SICK-OUT?

A sick-out is concerted action by a group of employees, who call in sick to protest against the company and its policies. It is meant to hold the company to ransom. In ordinary language, it is a strike to show the power they hold over the company’s working. It is a slightly more devious method than taking to the streets openly and raising slogans. Employees hope to put pressure on the company and force it to meet their demands.

WHAT IS UNBREAKABLE GLASS MADE OF, AND IS IT REALLY UNBREAKABLE?

The presence of micro cracks on the glass surface (called Griffith’s micro cracks) makes glass breakable under tension or impact. Such micro cracks are unavoidable as the glass surface comes under tension while cooling from a high temperature into various shapes. However, one can increase its impact resistance by various methods, so it can withstand even the impact of a bullet. The idea is to remove the surface micro cracks by chemical etching, or putting the glass surface under compression by physical or chemical toughening. One can even laminate two such toughened glass plates with resin in-between. These glasses are unbreakable, but when the threshold value is very high, it eventually breaks or cracks.

WHAT IS UNIVERSAL TIME COORDINATED?

Universal Time Coordinated (UTC) is a time standard based on International Atomic Time with leap seconds added at irregular intervals to compensate for the Earth’s slowing rotation. A leap second is a positive or negative one-second adjustment to the UTC scale that keeps it close to Mean Solar Time at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. The difference between UTC and Mean Solar Time is not allowed to exceed 0.9 seconds, so if high precision is not required, the general term Universal Time may be used. Time zones are expressed as positive or negative offsets from UTC. While each day contains 24 hours and each hour 60 minutes, the number of seconds in a minute can be 60,61 or 59.

HOW DO SENSOR DOORS WORK?

Sensor doors use motion sensors or presence sensors. The first are used to activate the door when it detects a moving object, such as a pedestrian or shopping cart. Motion sensors can distinguish between objects moving toward the door or away from it. They use microwave technology and utilize the Doppler Effect principle. The sensors emit a high frequency microwave signal — when the wave encounters a moving object, it bounces back and its frequency changes in proportion to the object’s speed; Presence sensors detect both moving and non-moving objects in the path of the door. Presence sensors use infrared technology — they emit an invisible pulsed light signal. The receiver looks for the reflected signal and reacts.

WHO DISCOVERED COMETS? HOW IS THE TAIL FORMED?

Comets have been known to mankind since eons, hence it cannot be said that comets were discovered by any single individual. A comet, like planets and asteroids, orbits around the sun — with fee orbital period varying from a few years to thousands of years. A comet is formed of rock, ice, dust and a few frozen gases like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and methane. When a comet is close to the sun, the radiation from the sun causes the volatile matter in the comet to vaporize and spread out into space in the form of its tail, its dust particles and ions glowing due to sunlight falling on it.

WHAT IS HAY FEVER AND WHY IS IT SO CALLED?

Hay fever is a form of allergy belonging to a group of maladies including hives, asthma and skin problems caused by protein sensitization.During certain seasons, many plants, grasses release their pollens into the air in large quantities. A person is said to have hay fever when he/she is sensitive to these pollens and other substances present in the air. It is called hay fever because the symptoms of the disease appear during spring and fall in England.

HOW IS THE HEIGHT OF WATER TIDES PREDICTED?

As astronomical data is not sufficient to calculate tides, predictions are also based on actual tidal measurements in many areas, over ah extended period. A network of tide stations is equipped to take the following measurements every six minutes: tide levels, wind speed and direction, water current speeds, directions, air and water temperatures and barometric pressure. Stations that provide these daily predictions are called reference stations. Other stations are subordinate stations, which obtain predictions by applying a specific formula to this data. The formula is derived by observing how tides at the two stations related to one another in the past.

WHAT IS A MINSKIAN PONZI DEAL?

The Minskian Ponzi deal was a theory propounded by American economist Minsky, in 1986. Such deals are both unsustainable and hazardous. In Minsky’s view, periods of economic and financial stability lead to a lowering of investors’ risk aversion and a process of releveraging. Investors borrow excessively and push asset prices excessively high. In this process, there are three types of investors/borrowers. First, sound or hedge borrowers who can afford to pay on their own. Second, speculative borrowers who can only service interest payments out of their cash flows. Finally, there are Ponzi borrowers who can service neither interest nor principal payments, and need to keep on refinancing their debts.

WHAT IS A SINKING FUND?

It is a fund set aside as a means to repay funds borrowed through a bond issue. The issuer makes periodic payments to a trustee who retires part of the issue by purchasing the bonds in the open market. Rather than the issuer repaying the entire principal of a bond issue on the maturity date, another company buys back a portion of the issue annually, and usually at fixed par value or at the current market value of the bonds, whichever is less. From the investor’s point of view, a sinking fund adds safety to a corporate bond issue: with it, the issuing company is less likely to default on repayment.

WHY DOES SNOW LOOK WHITE BUT WATER IS COLOURLESS?

Snow is a block of individual ice crystals arranged together. When a light photon enters a layer of snow, it goes through an ice crystal on the top, which changes its direction slightly and sends it on to a new ice crystal, which does the same thing. Basically, all the crystals bounce the light all around, so that it comes right back out of the snow pile. It does the same thing to all the different light frequencies, so all colours of light are bounced back out. The ‘colour’ of all the frequencies in the visible spectrum combined in equal measure is white, so this is the colour we see in snow.

HOW IS THE TIME DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TWO COUNTRIES CALCULATED?

The earth has 360 imaginary lines called longitudes or meridians running vertically between the poles. Each of these longitudes is called a degree. The 0 degree longitude passing through Greenwich, near London, is considered as standard and the time of all other time zones are calculated accordingly. The time difference between each longitude (each degree) is 4 minutes. So if it is 12 noon at Greenwich (0 degree), it would be 12:04 pm at 1 degree meridian and so on. In India, the standard meridian is 82-and-half degree. So the time difference between Greenwich and India is 82.5 x 4, which is 330 minutes (5 hours 30 minutes).

The ozone layer contains ozone molecules — 03 molecules — which are formed by the action of ultra-violet rays on atmospheric oxygen. This oxygen, which is 02, converts into 03 when UV rays fall on it. When these rays fall on the surface of the atmosphere, they are absorbed in the conversion of oxygen into ozone. As a result, ultra-violet rays are blocked by this ozone layer.

HOW IS THE TEMPERATURE OF A STAR MEASURED?

As stars are very far away, their temperatuce cannot be measured directly. Fortunately, the light coming from stars can be analyzed through several scientific instruments. Although all stars appear white, they have different colours when carefully viewed. The variations are a result of their temperature — cold stars appear red, and hot ones blue or white. The colour of a star is measured by an instrument called photoelectric photometer, which involves passing the light through different filters and finding the amount that passes through each filter. The measures from the photometer are converted to temperature, using standard scales.

WHY DOES A FALLING OBJECT HAVE NO WEIGHT?

Every body on this earth is attracted by the gravitational pull of the earth. A freely falling object has weight W=mg, where W-weight, m-mass of the object and g-acceleration produced due to the earth’s gravity An object kept in a lift which falls freely, weighs zero on the weighing machine, but its actual weight is still mg. This happens because the normal reaction force exerted on the object in the lift is equal to zero, and normal force equals to mg, which in turn equals the weight of the object.

This curiosity from the mid-1970s is breathtaking in its dreadfulness. Directed by Hal Needham, this was an attempt at creating a Roadrunner cartoon with live actors–except that instead of a live actor they got Arnold Schwarzenegger, before Hollywood smoothed his rough edges (and his Austrian accent). He plays the invulnerable sheriff who rides blithely through life, unaware that the evil Kirk Do…

Christmas in Cappawhite

CHRISTMAS IN CAPPAWHITE

Elizabeth McNamer

With the autumn leaves swept up, and winter fires glowing in the chimney place, the first sign of Christmas appeared, the baking of the Christmas cake. Early in November (the month of the holy souls was temporarily forgotten), shop keepers shelved raisins and currants and sultanas and nuts, and self- raising flour, and the hens were busy laying extra eggs. Publicans ordered in the indispensable just-once- a-year brandy. Housewives sought out the recipe passed down the generations.

Aproned women eagerly set about the happy ritual: the pudding bowl was taken down from the shelf and the black cast-iron baking pot wiped clean, oiled, and fitted with grease-proof paper and the fire was poked and topped with damp coals. And then the soaking of the fruit in boiling hot water, the beating of the eggs, the creaming of the butter and sugar, the sifting of the flour, and the crowning of the mixture by the liberal soaking with the brandy ( always reserving the “sup for the cat.”)

“Cats don’t drink brandy” the children said.

“Oh but they do” said their fathers.

“Saint Bernard’s dogs have brandy” someone remembered

“Jasus, Josie you didn’t put all the booze in the bloody cake!”

Good children were allowed to stir the mixture while wishing for something that was bound to be granted (if you wished for the right thing). My mother suggested I wish for good health so that I could enjoy eating it.

The cake took several hours to bake over the fire, and the smell from every house was intoxicating. The half empty brandy bottle was placed on the kitchen table.

“Just a little sup to welcome the season.”

And the evening was red nosed and merry

Over the weeks the cake had to be kept moist by the additions of more brandy (if the cat hadn’t swallowed it all.)

As November waned, Advent began. A time of prayer and penance. Children were admonished to say 4000 Hail Mary’s in honor of the 4000 years the world was kept waiting for the coming of Jesus. This amounted to three rosaries a day and I remember being on my knees all day Christmas eve trying to make up for my deficiencies.

In early December toys began to appear in the shop windows. … rag dolls of green and pink and red, some with black hair and some with fair, stood primly displayed against the back wall, surrounded by small tea sets, and cots, and tin soldiers, and golliwogs and little train sets and games of ludo and snakes and ladders and checkers and jig saw puzzles and books about Aladdin and Cinderella and fairies. How I loved to peer in the window and imagine that they all belonged to me. Of course I would not want the toys for myself, but I would save them for my children when I was grown up. Greed was a venial sin, as my grandmother knew well, and even to lust after toys was an occasion of sin. Confessions during the Advent season were frequent and penances doled out (usually extra Hail Mary’s, as if we did not have enough already).

Dan Fitzgibbon’s window displayed dresses and shoes and had a silver garland around the window pane. Buckley’s bakery made barm-brack bread with currants and spices and sometimes we had this for tea as a treat (although again it might be a sin when we considered the starving children of Europe).

Once in early December my mother took my brother Michael and me to Cork to see the decorations. Chinese lanterns were suspended from poles in the dining room of the hotel where we went to have tea. I had never seen anything so beautiful and thought that when I grew up I would have Chinese lanterns in my house every Christmas. And then we went to the big shop where Michael and I were to meet Father Christmas. The smiling red- clad man sat on a big red chair but none of the children dared go near him. He smelt just like the men on the night of baking the Christmas cakes.

Timidly, I sat on his lap and asked if I could have a new dress, just like my mother had told me to

“Have you been a good girl? “

I said “No” and started to cry.

I was afraid of telling a lie because I had taken two biscuits when my mother had said I could have one, and that would be a sin and Our Lady would not be pleased with me.

Father Christmas was distraught.

He asked if I had gone to confession. I told him that I had. And he said he wasn’t sure about me, but he would have to talk to my mother

Michael was next. He asked for a train set and Father Christmas got very mad and said he was a very selfish little boy with his mother working so hard to get the money to send him to school, and why didn’t he ask for a coat and hat like a sensible child, and he deserved to have the devilment beaten out of him.

The whole store was in an uproar and we left in shame, Michael wailing like a Banshee.

At school, we made drawings of the holy family and colored them with crayons and cut them out and pasted them to cardboard and had our own little nativity set to take home

“Mine’s bigger than yours”

“That’s because you put a dog and you are not supposed to.”

“What’s that big thing at the back?”

“That’s a camel”

“I never saw a camel like that”

“We don’t have camels in Ireland”

“How do you know what one looks like then?”

‘I’ve seen them in my dreams”

“Why did you make the lamb blue. Lambs aren’t blue”

“Well this one is.”

Mrs. Maher told the story of Bethlehem and how cold it was that night that Jesus was born, with snow on the ground and only the breath of a cow and ass to warm him.

Tom Joe McGrath asked if he had been found under a cabbage like the rest of us. And Mrs. Maher said that he had been born in a horse’s trough with straw.

“There weren’t any horses” Tom Joe protested.

“Maybe it was a camel’s trough”

“Must have been a cow’s or an ass’s.”

Bethlehem was a far away mystical place at the end of the world and we sang a hymn about it with great reverence.

As the advent days began to end, my older brothers came home from boarding school at Rockwell college. My mother was so excited. Green curtains were hung on the windows in the parlor. Linen was put to air by the fire and the best bed-spreads were taken out of the closet and the beds made up in the four -bed boys’ room. We drove to the college to see the Gilbert and Sullivan that was always put on at Christmas. One year, my brother Frank was the pirate king. I fell in love with opera there and then and the love has remained with me.

The coming home of my brothers was such a glorious time. We had sausages and bacon and eggs for tea in the dining room with the best china all laid out. And later I would lie in my own little bed in my tiny room and listen to the masculine voices coming from the dormitory and feel so secure and warm.

By the last Sunday of Advent fat geese could be seen wondering in the back yard of Tracy’s the butchers, unaware of the fate that awaited them. And unruly children taunted them.

Christmas is coming and the geese are getting fat.

Please put a penny in the old man’s hat

If you haven’t got a penny a halfpenny will do

If you haven’t got a half penny, then God bless you

On Christmas Eve, the goose was plucked in the back kitchen and hung over the fire place. The Christmas cake was taken out and decorated with white royal icing with “Happy Christmas ” written in red. We went to the woods to pick holly to decorate the house, and the branches were put behind all the pictures in the parlor. It looked so beautiful with the gleaming dark leaves and berries red as blood and the fire crackling in the chimney. And my grandmother arrived saying that we would set the house on fire and couldn’t we think of something else to do wrong and my father glancing up from his reading and murmuring about “that bloody woman again. “ And shop- keepers delivered ham and whiskey and puddings in Christmas boxes. And the dog threw up the goose feathers.

Before going to bed we set a candle in the kitchen window so that Mary and Joseph would be able to find a place to rest if they needed to come in out of the snow. And I prayed that Mary and Joseph would come to see us instead of Father Christmas coming down the chimney. I had to stay awake to finish off the 4000 Hail Mary’s.

And then, the anticipation of falling asleep on Christmas Eve.

My brother Freddy was always the first up on Christmas morning, rooting through the brown bag to see what Father Christmas had left him. One year I got a pink rag doll and a box of watercolor paints. But, I already had a pink rag doll that I got last Christmas. I realized that Santa wanted me to have twins and I introduced the dolls to each other and put them aside to play with after Mass.

The half past eight o clock in the parish church was crowded. Father Callahan talked about how poor Jesus was and that he got no toys when he was born in Bethlehem even though he was god. I felt guilty that I had two dolls and Jesus had none. Mrs. Conway played the organ and we sang “Silent Night” even though it was already day. After Mass everyone said “Happy Christmas” to everyone else and I said “thank you” when they said it to me.

Moll Mullen lived up the hill road in a very small house. I knew that Moll was poor. My mother often used to send me up to her house with food. She had to take care of her brothers and sisters while her mother went to work because her father “was boozing” away their money. Moll repeatedly had to miss school. When she did manage to get there, she had to sit in the dunce’s corner because she did not know her lessons. The dunce’s corner was far from the fireplace and she stood there shivering. This Christmas morning she was wearing shoes and I wondered if Father Christmas had brought them. But Moll corrected me.

“He doesn’t bother with the likes of me.”

She had accepted her lot in life of service and never receiving. Perhaps she related to Jesus better than I did.

Breakfast of sausages and eggs and boiling hot sweet tea, but I couldn’t eat. I told my mother about Moll. She looked at me thoughtfully.

“Maybe Father Christmas made a mistake. You got two things from him.”

I thought of my pretty new doll and how I always wanted twins. But I knew that that doll was not meant for me.

Later my brother Vivian was sent up the hill road with the doll wrapped in newspaper and a note saying

“Father Christmas left this at our house by mistake. He just called to tell us who it was for”

Christmas Day. The delicious smell of the cooking goose, the business of preparing dinner and setting the table. The best linen was laid out in the dining room with the good china and silver. It was a Dickens feast. My mother dished out the goose, ham, mashed potatoes and gravy and cauliflower and then for pudding we had jelly and cream.

The afternoon was spent playing games in the parlor while my grandmother had her once- a -year glass of port and snored. And my father read out loud from Dickens. And after tea when the Christmas cake was cut, my mother played the piano and we all gathered around the fire and sang the old songs: “Annie Laurie” “The Minstral Boy to the War has Gone” and “Danny Boy” and my grandmother cried. And Freddy got the hiccups and Michael wanted to play with his stuff and my grandmother chastised him and said that Father Christmas had been right, and he called her an old fecker , and my father winked at him and said that he must be more respectful of his grandmother.

And then we had more cake and jelly and cream and the grown ups had whiskey.

And the holly berries shone red on the green leaves and the candles flickered. And all was peaceful.

Christmas all over the world. Jesus had been born in Bethlehem, a long way off. Mary and Joseph could never have made it this far. Some day I would go to Bethlehem myself and see where it all happened.

And in Cappawhite all was happiness.

Choosing the Best Ride on Toys for your Kids

We wonder how toys evolve through the years. Before, we just ride on horses made out of wood and hop pretending the horse is moving but now, there are battery operated ride on toys that kids would definitely love. Wide varieties of ride on toys are available for kids starting 8 months old and up. These toys come in different styles, color, speed and sizes. They can run in smooth and rough surfaces. They are usually battery operated that comes with safety gears. All these will definitely make your children happy but as parents, let us be guided of the things we should consider before buying one.

The first thing we should consider is the maker of the toy. It should be durable because it will be used by kids. It should be able to withstand different types of surfaces. Check all its parts and make sure that they are properly working. We have to think of our kids’ safety when they use it. Check if these toys are equipped with safety gears like seat belts especially for fast speed toys. You can buy helmet and pads for added precaution.

Secondly, it should be appropriate to your child’s age. There are ride on toys that are made specifically for toddlers or that can only be used by pre-school kids. There are toys that are made for girls and for boys use only. It is best to check the warning message that is mostly found on their boxes. This will inform you the age which the toys are best used by. Let us avoid buying toys that are not appropriate to them. We cannot afford to buy something that will only be hazardous to them.

Thirdly, since your child grows as time passes by, it is best for you to get ride on toys that have adjustable seats. Reason behind is that your child can still use them while growing up. That does not only allow your child use it for a longer time but also saves you money. We also need to consider if the parts of the toy can be replaceable. It is better if you can replace the distorted part of the toy than buying a new one.

Lastly, buy a toy that your child can manipulate. Have them try it before taking it home. See if they are comfortable using it. If you think that your child cannot maneuver it properly, it is better to return it and have it replaced so better keep the receipt. Let us just remember these tips that will surely help you in getting the best ride on toy for your kids. Happy shopping!

Harley Davidson Rider as American Iron Horse

Harley Davidson could make people dream. Whatever will be someone to reach his dream. Sometimes a person can have a Harley motorcycle after saving for 40 years. In fact, there are people who to sell his house and prefer to live in rented house for a Harley. Why would anyone until like this? That’s fanaticism. That life style.

Riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle is not just climb into the market, to home-in-law, or wherever a purpose. Riding a Harley Davidson is a pride for their owners. Drove around the city or convoy from town to town, riding a Harley that with manly body, and classy, bringing satisfaction to its owner.

There is a different feeling when you ride a Harley. The feeling is hard to explain. So we’re not talking about technology or comfort here. We’re talking about the “legend”, and experience different lifestyles. That’s what distinguishes a Harley with other large motor. None of the Harley in this world the same shape. You will never find an identical Harley. Left out of the factory, it’s the same model. However, when got in the hands of buyers, Harley was going to their modification. Harley owners will express themselves with their Harley “design”.

If you’ve got another great bike, no accessories that you can put it. If Harley difference. Harley in the garage, we can imagine, visualize: accessories what can we tide. Harley accessories that sky the limit, or wallet and your creativity are boundless. If you see another motorcycle on the street, surely the same model, just different colors.

Harley fanaticism people is indeed extraordinary. Some say, their blood is the blood of Harley. Many people who live in style Harley. Harley has become a fanatic with a typical fan of Harley. In America they are called Harley People. In fact, there is life in the saddle Harley, traveling to bring equipment to cook, drink and clothing while wage labor here and there. It was so fanatical, the late Elvis Presley’s family had come to bury Harley Electra’s, favorite that rock’n'roll singer is the grave of the star.

What is the history of Harley Davidson? Developing motor companies in the United States (U.S.) in 1901. Initially it first appeared Yale companies, Pope, Merkel, Henderson, Thor, Excelsior, Indian, and only recently built Harley Davidson in Milwaukee, Wiscounsin, by four series of William A Davidson, Walter Davidson Sr., Arthur Davidson and William S. Harley.

Only in recent decades, popping up in U.S. more than 150 motorcycle manufacturers, but due to competition, eventually one by one collapse. Toward the end of World War II, only two remaining factories. When the plant pride, Indians, fell in 1953, the Harley-Davidson became the sole U.S. motorcycle manufacturer left.

How to be the only Harley motorcycle factory in the U.S. are left, many observers say, quite difficult to explain. Also, when facing a crisis against the onslaught of Japanese motorcycles had Harley managed to survive, although for approximately eight years to get a kind of protection from American Machine & Founddry (AMF).

Sense of America contained in engine design and body design of Harley Davidson evoke emotional ties Americans to save the factory motor only while he was alive.

Harley Davidson is the embodiment of American history that modernized. U.S. persons or U.S. history can not be separated by a horse, because of the history, the United States “opened” with the horse. Immigrants from Europe when it urged the native people Indians, they used horses. Because of that Harley Davidson is designed like “horse” with the characteristics of a rear rigid, stiff, meet the needs of the United States would “horse” is.

Harley Davidson is their iron horses. They call the iron horse or Milwaukee Iron. Harley rider seat was as if sitting on a saddle horse. No Harley models whose position is bent like a racer. Everything was sitting upright, like horseback riding

That’s it. Harley becomes a lifestyle. Harley riders are clothes that are designed for comfort and safety of the drivers were in fashion. “Clothes that we adjust the bike. Clothing should blend with the engine because the exhaust was hot Harley. So the clothes should fit the body for easy movement. Another group, no one had a unique apparel

You may have heard all the buzz about this talented, beautiful woman, Taylor Swift. She is an amazing artist that has won many awards this year and continues to produce chart topping hit songs. She has been on numerous magazine covers, television shows, and performed during music award shows.

At only 20 years old she has taken over the music industry and has been a proven success not only in that industry but she can also write her own songs and act. She is a country pop artist and is accepted, admired, and appreciated by both country and pop music fans. Billboard magazine deemed her the respected title as artist of the year.

Taylor was born in 1989 and grew up in Pennsylvania. At an early age she showed an interest in writing poems and songs, performing comedy acts, and singing country music. Like a lot of other musicians, her talent may have been inherited by her grandmother who was a professional opera singer. However, instead of singing opera, she would sing country music accompanied by karaoke backgrounds. She also plays instruments such as a regular guitar and a 12 string, ukulele, and the piano.

In 2006, she released her first professional single that was played on every Internet radio and traditional radio station. Her hit song called, “Tim McGraw,” topped the country music charts at position six. The song was written about her and her high school boyfriend, and the memories they shared together. It was a great start to her professional singing career under the recording label Big Machine Records.

After the success of her single, she released a self titled album that successfully went platinum, which means she sold more than 1,000,000 albums worldwide. The release of her second album, called “Fearless,” solidified her career as a success in the industry. This album stayed on the top of the music charts for 11 weeks, which is unheard of. “Fearless” included chart topping singles such as “White Horse” and “Love Story.”

Because of the success of the album, she was nominated for eight Grammy awards and won five American Music Awards. At the American Music Awards, she won the most coveted award as Artist of the Year.

Not only is she a great singer, but she is also an amazing actress. She has made cameos in other artists’ movies such as Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience and Hannah Montana: The Movie. In addition to having cameos in movies, she also hosted Saturday Night Live and performed some of her hit songs live on the show. She also appeared in an episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. She is taking on the big screen next year in the movie Valentine’s Day.

Taylor Swift can sing, write songs, play music instruments, and act. Is there anything that this amazing artist can’t do?

Although it blithely rewrites the history of a legendary race horse, The Story of Seabiscuit is still an appealing example of Technicolor entertainment from Hollywood’s studio system. It wasn’t unusual for contract players (in this case Shirley Temple, Barry Fitzgerald, and Lon McAllister) to play fictional characters in fact-based stories, since factual fidelity was often considered a secondary p…

According to an expert of the English language, the most frequently used English noun is the word ‘way’. However, in horse training the most frequently used word is ‘whoa’. It is important to be aware of the words we use in training our horses and what meaning we attach to them. We must be careful not to teach our horse to do something based on a verbal command that is not what we want them to do.

“Whoa”, frequently falls into the confused and misunderstood category. People often make simple errors with the word ‘whoa’. For example, a person’s riding along and the horse picks up speed, and a high percentage of riders will say ‘whoa’. However, what the rider really means to say is ’slow down’, but they pull on the reins and say ‘whoa’, and so the horse does not really learn what you mean by ‘whoa’, what he learns is that ‘whoa’ means he is about to get a jab in the mouth from the bit.

The horse fails to learn that ‘whoa’ means stop. Now he may slow down from the verbal signal of ‘whoa’ and the jab in the mouth, and if he does and the rein pressure is then released, he will learn that ‘whoa’ means slow down, which is not what you really want from the word ‘whoa’.

Soon when you want him to stop and you’re pulling and getting mad because he’s not stopping, you will have a confused horse under you. A confused horse is a horse that doesn’t trust, and trust is a very important tool that needs to exist between you and your horse. It is important to distinguish between when a horse does what you ask for and when they do it because they a re unsure o confused and happen upon the correct result. The prior is termed a response and the later is termed a reaction, and you want a response rather than a reaction, and you get a response through the development of trust.

To get trust, there has to be a reward system, and a certain amount of respect. Remember, be careful not to confuse your horse, as confusion leads to fear and fear gets you a reaction, but trust gets you a response.

http://everythingbutthehorse.net

I have trained and bred Arabian horses for over twenty years and have developed my skills through the guidance and philosophies of some of the greatest ‘natural horseman’ of their day. I have been influenced by such greats as Monty Roberts, Tom Dorrance and Ray Hunt. I only endorse techniques in horse training that comply with the philosophy that ‘violence is never the answer’.

http://everythingbutthehorse.net

Training/ Riding with just leads snapped to the sides of a halter?

I am training my horse to ride, and I don’t want to use a bit. I’ve heard a hackamore isn’t good for training, so I wanted to know if anyone just uses two leadropes for training or riding.

Definitely don’t use a hackamore, they are very dangerous and can break your horse’s jaw.
If I were you, I would (on the ground) teach your horse lateral flexion with a halter and rope. (its best to hook your rope to the side for the first couple times, its easier for them to understand, then when they get good there, move it to the ring under their chin)
When they get good at bending around with the halter and rope, get a plain training snaffle bit and do the same thing again, you can leave it on them for a couple hours a day if they have a major problem with it.
You definitely want to get a bit in their mouth and let them understand what “turn” means well before you ever get on their back. But teaching them with a halter and rope first is good because it will keep them softer when you go to a bit. Don’t let anyone tell you that a horse is too soft on the bit, I don’t think it’s possible. LOL
Some other training tips before you get on, is to do some basic ground driving. The goal is to have them “broke” before you ever get on, but don’t waste time, you shouldn’t have to do ground work for more than 3 days (for a really smart horse) or 5 days (for the slower ones
The best way a horse learns is to do things in sets of three, three pulls to one side, three to the next, three sets then a break, three days in a row then a day off. Things seem to sink in a lot better when you do it in sets of three, don’t know why.
