Urine smell from tanning process out of my bag?

I bought a new leather messenger bag from overseas and apparently they are tanning old school and it smells like a cow, like a live, dirty, manured cow. And since I’m not lugging it around the farm, I’d like to figure out how to get the smell out of the bag. Knowing nothing about “horse urine” tanning process I think they must have used, I’m looking for a way to make the bag at least not smell like a barnyard and hopefully get that “new leather” smell in it. So anyone have any ideas?

I have had pretty good luck with coffee grounds. Place an open container of, (used wet), coffee grounds in the bag and seal it closed for a couple of days. It will smell like coffee for a few days, (better than urine), and then the smell will be gone. I’m told that the grounds have the ability to absorb oders. After that I would get one of the auto leather conditioners and use it on the exterior of the bag. I use a creme conditioner purchased at Wal Mart on my leather seats and they smell wonderful. It couldn’t hurt.

Have you ever though about riding your horse barefoot, with the wind whipping through your hair? It does sound nice, doesn’t it? However, you might want to think twice about this idea and instead consider some suitable riding apparel. Riding apparel has a very important purpose – keeping you, the rider, safe as you go galloping around.

Boots are a must, whether you are an adherent of the English or Western style of riding. Wearing boots is not just for riding, but for all activities around horses including feeding, grooming, exercising, etc. After all, those hooves are very heavy and if your horse accidentally steps on your toes; well, let’s just say you’ll wish you’d worn boots. For riding, a boot with a heel is the best choice as it will prevent your foot from slipping through the stirrups. However, for working in your stable, you may want to pick up a pair of paddock boots or work boots. They’ll be more sturdy and durable, and often more comfortable.

Not very many people are excited about wearing a riding helmet. After all, one would hardly call them stylish. At the same time, a riding helmet can quite literally be a lifesaver in the event of a fall. Your baseball cap or cowboy hat will not provide adequate protection. Shop for a well-rated helmet specifically designed for horseback riding. Vented models can keep you cooler.

Long pants, breeches or jodhpurs should be worn when riding. They’ll protect your legs from the saddle and horse’s sweat and from brush, sticks and the elements.

In competitive riding, you’ll have to stow your regular riding wear and pull out your show clothes – whether riding English or Western. Each style has clothing requirements, and each season brings new styles. If you aren’t following both the rules and the styles, you’ll find it hard to win ribbons.

If the show you’re riding in asks for hunt seat attire, then you’ll have to wear a riding shirt which is either white or pinstriped. You’ll also need breeches, a hunting cap, dress riding boots and a wool riding jacket. Riding gloves are also customary in these events. Breeches and jacket can be any dark color, but you may want to find out what colors are “in” before making an investment in them. Being out of style may not win you favor with the judges or the audience.

You’ll need to dress formal for dressage riding. You’ll need a white shirt, a stock tie (which should be fastened with a horse-themed pin), white or tan breeches, black jacket and dress boots, as well as a helmet or hunt cap. If it is a saddle seat competition, then you’ll want dark jodhpurs, jodhpur boots, a riding derby, a dark jacket and white riding shirt.

Western riders wear different clothes depending on their gender. Men will need Western shirts, ties, belts (leather with silver buckles), felt cowboy hats, riding boots, jeans and chaps. Women will be attired in Western shirts, vest or jacket, riding boots, felt hats and of course, jeans and chaps. In more intense sports, the ties and silver belt buckles are not required.

Should I go all the way back to Beginners lessons in Horse back riding?

I am 13 years old, and around 2 years ago I did half day long riding lessons, for about two weeks. I don’t completely remember how to ride properly and this weekend, i am going into my local stables for a riding exam/test, so they can place me. I’m very nervous and embarrassed about being kind of older than the other students if i am placed in a very low graded class.
ALSO:
I am extremely nervous on what i should wear for the first day, as well as every day.
I did my online researching, but i would REALLY appreciate it if i could hear it from a real person. Are running shoes, jeans, and a T-shirt okay? Or should I spend some Cash on some riding boots, pants etc.?
I don’t want to seem like the odd one out if everyone is wearing professional REAL horseback riding apparel.
So PLEASE tell me as much as you know, as well as asnwer my questions!

Yes, you can wear blue jeans- I do that all the time, and they work great and are very comfortable to ride in. However, don’t wear sneakers or athletic shoes- you need shoes with a heel of at LEAST two inches, for safety’s sake. Flat bottomed shoes like sneakers are DANGEROUS, sweetie- you can get your foot caught in the stirrup and get DRAGGED if you should fall while wearing them. I’ve known riders who’ve been BADLY HURT and even KILLED that way, so BE SMART and don’t make this mistake. If you want to wear breeches, that’s fine too, but make sure they fit you properly- they shouldn’t sag or ride up on your legs. T-shirts are fine for riding, but make sure you dress for the weather- there’s nothing worse than being too hot or too cold when you are trying to learn to ride.

Lastly, and perhaps most important of all, you MUST WEAR A HELMET, EVERY TIME YOU RIDE. NO EXCEPTIONS, and NO EXCUSES. The purpose of the helmet is to protect the most vulnerable part of your body in a fall- namely, your HEAD and brain. Riding without a helmet DOESN’T make you look cool- it sends the message that you are immature and don’t know enough to take some responsibility for your own safety. If grown up professionals like ME can wear a helmet ( which I do every time I ride) then you can too. They even have this rule at the racetrack, which is something I thought I’d point out, since you’ve asked your question in the horse racing section. NOBODY who rides at a racetrack does so without a helmet on their head- and I mean NO ONE. Even the big time trainers respect and follow this rule.

Good luck- and try not to be nervous. There will be people there who are older than you, who are beginners too- we all have to start somewhere. Just relax, and have fun. Ask questions if you don’t understand something ( and try to remember that there are no stupid questions- the only question like that is the one YOU DIDN’T ASK) and make sure you listen carefully to what you are told.

Whenever the term “Western horse” is used, most people picture a rough-and-tumble rodeo – an event full of color but so full of danger, too, that no youngster would be permitted to enter the regular events. What few people realize is that many small, country horse shows have classes open to Western horses. The wide range of these local shows gives them their importance to the show world, and if you own a Western horse, you should pay attention so you’ll know about the shows in time to enter your horse.

In case you strongly prefer western riding, you don’t have to worry about being left out of the fun – or change your style simply because you thought all horse shows were exclusively for English riders. “Well,” you may be thinking, “all I have to do, then, is to pick out the kind of horse I want and then use a western saddle and bridle on him. That’s just fine.”

But it isn’t quite as simple as that! You wouldn’t advise a person about to go on a hunt to use an American saddle horse on the chase. You’d suggest he use a thoroughbred – or a horse with thoroughbred characteristics. The same standards of suitability hold true if you’re picking out a Western horse for yourself. Suppose that, during your excursions to find a horse, a big, long-limbed thoroughbred strikes you as a handsome animal – one you’d like to own. After all, you reason, he has speed, courage, stamina – just right for a Western horse.

Strictly in terms of breeds, the Morgan and the Arabian offer good Western horse prospects.

Both are small horses and have plenty of strength and endurance. The Morgan is compact and therefore good at making fast turns, stops and starts. The Arabian is traditionally a desert horse and so is capable of working on little food and foraging for himself. Also, he has a perfect canter.

However good Morgans and Arabians may be, an important western breed we haven’t yet talked about is the quarter horse. Every Westerner will boast of the qualities of this breed, but the fact is that the quarter horse had his beginnings in the East – in Virginia.

In the late 1600’s, Virginia gentlemen enjoyed racing their stock but there were no big race tracks available. They would use stretches of road near the towns – the road lap usually being about a quarter of a mile long. The distance became standardized and men began to breed horses especially for these quarter-mile races. Usually the breeder combined imported English horses either with the speedy little runners developed by the Chickasaw Indians or with a Rhode Island variety which had come down from New England and competed successfully against earlier Virginia horses.

Then a horse named Janus, an English racer with thoroughbred bloodlines, was imported and began to transmit his characteristics to all his offspring. In time, the entire breed was influenced by the speed and power he passed on to his foals, and, as sprinters, Quarter horses became unbeatable. Then, when racetracks were built, the Easterners gave up the quarter Horse in favor of thoroughbred racing on longer tracks. But ranchers and cowboys soon discovered that the compactness of the quarter horse enabled him to turn quickly and stop short. In fact, many people who want a Western horse get a quarter horse. Western horses come in all shapes and sizes, you just need to find the one that’s right for you.

Tips For Beginning Horse Racing Handicappers Who Want to Make Money Betting on Horse Races

I started handicapping and betting on horse races many years ago. I was lucky enough to have family members involved in horse racing and who knew a lot about horses. But even with that advantage, it took a long time before I ever showed a profit from playing the ponies. It made me realize what the average person is up against when he or she decides to try to make a profit from the races.

Even though I got some knowledge and advice from the people on the backstretch, it still would have been nice to have a good handicapper tell me what I needed to know, whether or not I was wise enough to listen. Anyone who plays the races for a while, whether for fun or for a living, learns that there are a lot of life lessons to be learned from gambling and horse betting.

Take each suggestion and do what you will with it. No two lives are exactly the same, so the things I’ve learned may not mean much in your life, but you never know, you just may learn a few things from these tips that will help make life a little smoother.

The first thing I learned about gambling and playing the horses is that it is a tough way to make money. It looks glamorous at first, but when you actually do it to make the money to pay the bills, it can be very tough.

The second big lesson and the advice I would give to any beginning horse player is, don’t expect anyone else to make you a good horse player. You may learn from other people but the final result, how you put all the information together and apply it in your life, is totally up to you.

Third on the list of lessons is that while things may work out fine on paper, they seldom go as smoothly in real life. You may keep records and do data studies til’ the cows come home and think you have perfected the perfect horse racing system, only to lose your shirt when you start playing it. Therefore, here is a real good tip. Until you are rock solid sure of yourself and what you are doing, bet light.

Fourth on the list of things I have learned is that racing and gambling are insidious and can gradually take over your life and lead to losing your objectivity. After a while they seem more important than other people and the rest of your life. Don’t let that happen. Most of our lives, the meaningful parts, takes place away from the race track.

Fifth of the lessons I have learned is that nothing works all the time. We handicappers tend to fall into ruts and when we find something that makes us money, we think it will last forever. Nothing could be farther from the truth. You must have a bag of tricks so you can try different things until you find what is happening at a particular meet at a particular time. Knowing when to zig and when to zag is probably the handicappers greatest gift.

Sixth and finally, keep records and notes and read them often so you can keep track of how you are doing and what you can do to improve yourself and your performance.

These six racing tips may seem simple, but they would have saved me many trips home with empty pockets and a heavy heart.

Planning Kid-Friendly Vacations

I know. When you did that wild tour through Europe after college graduation, you never dreamed you’d be lugging kids on a family vacation a mere ten years later. But here you are facing the daunting task of planning a family vacation during which no homicides or accidental deaths will take place. Great family vacations exist but they require some wise and careful planning. Here are a few tips that should help. 

1.   Attitude is important. If you’re walking around irritated, mean, and stressed out, your kids are likely to catch the same feelings. It’s simply the nature of life on this planet for things to go wrong. Expect it and see it as only another obstacle to overcome in your great travel quest. If a crisis, small or large, develops, let one adult work on solving the problem while the other keeps the kids happy. I repeat, do not panic. 

2.   Be prepared. Baby wipes are invaluable, even with older kids, to wipe up messes. Bring a small container of mild laundry detergent to wash out clothing stains in the hotel sink. There are a hundred uses for Ziploc bags of various sizes. Bring medications of your choice such as children’s Tylenol, cough syrup, pepto bismol, or prescribed meds. If you don’t mind using Benadryl, it can be useful in enabling the kids to sleep while traveling. Choose toys that tend to keep kids engrossed for long periods in a limited space. Also, bring crayons, non-messy markers, and coloring books or paper. Bring books the kids can read or that you can read to them. If possible, bring some great kids’ audio books or a miniature video player. 

3.   A peaceful journey. If possible, consider the kids’ schedule when planning the trip. Plan the trip so that an hour or two into it the kids’ naptime arrives. That can give you at least an hour or so of peace. Even better, if you don’t mind the red-eye, book your travel or plan to drive overnight so that the kids will sleep most of the way. As you may know, amazingly light and compact strollers are available. So if you have toddlers, bringing a stroller can be an incredible time saver and prevent you from pulling out whatever hair is left on your head. 

4.   Resign yourself to the fact that family vacations must be designed, not primarily for you, but for the kids. Until the kids grow up, your chief satisfaction on vacations may be to enjoy the excitement and fun your kids are having. So forget the boring museums, art galleries, cathedrals, quaint architecture, majestic landscapes. These will have your kids either bored stiff or wailing within minutes. If you do a little research, you’ll be amazed at how many kid’s attractions there are besides Disney World. I’ll save the long list for a future article but here’s a short list of kid-friendly activities from two cities on opposite coasts. New York’s Central Park: Horse-drawn carriage rides, Heckscher Playground, lake boating, Swedish Cottage Marionette Theater, Central Park Zoo/Tisch Children’s Zoo, Belvedere Castle Nature Center. San Francisco: Hands-on Bay Area Discovery Museum, Zeum Museum for kids, Hershey Factory, Morris Planetarium, Underwater World, San Francisco Zoo, and Alcatraz. 

5.   As your kids grow older, even young teens will hate trooping around everywhere with their younger sibs. Try to take vacations that have attractions for both younger and older kids. Also, you may want to choose a well-behaved friend of your older child to come along. Believe it or not, one vacation that sometimes has programs for both younger and older kids is cruise lines. Check out the different cruise lines. Some of the programs are quite good and keep kids busy for large chunks of the day.

 If planned well, family vacations can produce some of the greatest memories and the funnest times of all. Hope this article helps to that end.

Which brand of paddock boots should i get? I ride english and would like a pair of comfortable, quality black paddock boots… i am willing to spend up to $100 for a pair that lasts. Which brand have you had good experiences with, and which ones should i stay away from?

I like Weatherbeeta…they are cheap, durable and honestly, for what they are worth, the best deal out there. You can get them at tack shops or any horse-related magazine (State Line). I am sending you a pic of the pair I have…State Lines sells them for $50. There are a lot of people out there that buy the best (by best I mean most expensive-not neccessarily most comfortable or durable) and in a few months get rid of them for another $130 pair! It is ridiculous! Weatherbeeta makes great boots, but if you want, go to your local Tack store and try some things on…then check the websites to see if you can find them cheaper!
