St Petersburg Russia – City of Palaces

Saint Petersburg is a city of Russia located on the Neva River at the head of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea. The city’s other names were Petrograd and Leningrad. It is often called just Petersburg and is informally known as Piter.

There’s no better city to visit for beautiful palaces, impressive gardens and stately museums than St. Petersburg in Russia. It has a collection of interesting places and activities that tourists, travelers and visitors alike will find exciting and riveting.

The city’s nickname, “City of Palaces“, is perfect to describe one of the most beautiful destinations in the country. It has an extensive collection of stunning and colossal architecture. To name a few, there are the majestic Summer and Winter Palaces as well as the grand Menshikov palace.

You will be happy to know that you can freely explore these magnificent edifices because they are now home to the country’s many museums. For one, the Summer Palace houses an impressive Emperor Peter the Great collection. Other palatial structures include some of the most glorious churches and cathedrals in the world. Top of the list is St. Isaac Cathedral whose claim to fame is having the world’s largest gold-plated dome. There is also the Smolny Cathedral that is truly charming with its stunning blue-and-white color palette in baroque style.

Another of St. Petersburg’s claim to fame – is the extensive green areas. It has several parks and gardens waiting to be explored and enjoyed. Some of the notable ones are the Alexander Garden and its illuminated musical fountain as well as the Botanical Garden and its more than 12,000 species of flora.

For some picture perfect monuments, head to the Palace Square and view the grandeur of its columns – named after the Alexander. You will not miss this because it stands out from the rest having been crafted out of the rare red granite. Another photo opportunity that is quintessentially Russian is the Bronze Horseman located at the Senate Square.

St. Petersburg is also home to the most remarkable art museums in the world. For an extensive survey of Western European masterpieces, the Hermitage is the place to visit. If it’s the Russian works of art that you are interested in, then take a look at the large collection of the State Russian Museum. There are also other thematic museums all over the city such as those dedicated to applied arts at Stieglitz Museum as well as military and political history at the Suvorov Museum.

If you are looking for notable performances, take a pick from the city’s more than 50 theatres and be totally awe-struck by both local and international talents. The world-famous ballet performance at the Mariinsky Theater is a must-see. If you want to see the city aglow with stunning fireworks and festive atmosphere, then time your visit during the White Nights Festival and you are in for a big treat.

Finally, make time for the stunning estate of Peterhof just outside of St. Petersburg built in the 17th century. This palace and park complex is hailed as the Russian Versailles because of its magnificent fountains and gardens. It is also equipped with an elongated pool that is connected to the Baltic Sea. The palace interiors are also worth checking out for the opulent ornamentation and design.

Mud Fever in Horses – Natural Treatment

Copyright (c) 2008 The Naturally Healthy Pet.com

Mud fever, greasy heel and cracked heels are all problems experienced by horses and ponies that are kept outside in wet, muddy conditions.

In this article I will outline the underlying problem, symptoms and signs, and management of this illness.

As the feet are continually exposed to the elements, the heels and the skin below the fetlocks become increasingly red and inflamed, and there may be a pus-stained discharge and crusting. Greasy heel and cracked heels can occur in winter or summer, and may be related to allergy.

Mud fever occurs mainly in the winter, and can affect the leg further up to the knee or hock. With mud fever the hair becomes matted, and the animal may become lame and unwell. The main culprit seems to be the organism Dermatophilus congolensis.

Signs that your horse is suffering from mud fever include: inflamed skin, matted hair, crusting, lameness and discharge.

Prevention is always the best treatment; so keep the animal’s legs dry and warm if possible; ensure they have access to a dry area; ensure bedding is dry, and reduce over-washing your horse’s legs; rotate paddocks and if possible gateways; cordon off the muddiest areas with electric fencing; disinfect all equipment and stables periodically to reduce the chance of Dermatophilus spores remaining.

There are a variety of western treatments currently in use. You may need to clip some of the hair to gain access to all of the affected area. Gentle bathing is needed to remove the scabs before other treatments will reach the affected area; a mild antiseptic such as dilute chlorhexidine is very useful. You may need to soak the area to ease away the worst of the scabs. Dry with a hair dryer, as it is essential that the legs are not left damp. Topical creams such as zinc and castor oil (as a barrier) or anti-inflammatory creams can be helpful, as long as the leg is dry first. Keep the horse’s legs dry ‘ bandaging may be needed. Waterproof leg wraps are available for turnout. Antibiotics may be needed.

Complementary Therapies can hasten and aid the healing process.

A variety of herbal remedies may be helpful. Barrier creams may be enhanced if they contain tea tree oil, aloe vera, honey, Vitamin E, MSM, calendula, hypericum, and/ or sulphur. Feed supplements containing cod liver or soya oil, anti-oxidants and seaweed (not in pregnant mares) may help promote a healthy skin.

Aromatics and Aromatherapy are frequently found to be helpful. Garlic, thyme, lavender, yarrow, Roman chamomile or German chamomile aromatic oils can be offered for a horse to self select by inhalation or licking, or if added to an aloe vera and water base can be applied to the affected area 1-2 times daily.

Healing with Reiki or Spiritual healing can help calm a horse and bring in her own self-healing abilities, reducing pain and helping the affected skin to heal. The effect may be enhanced with the use of crystals, such as amethyst. Healing is also likely to be aided with the use of magnetic therapy.

Selection of appropriate Bach flower remedies depends on the personality and current mood of your horse, so it is better to seek expert advice to get the optimal remedy combination.

Rescue remedy, which contains star of Bethlehem, rock rose, cherry plum, impatiens and clematis, is ideal for use in emergency situations. Homeopathy works best if you consult a trained veterinary homeopath, as the specific remedies can be targeted to your horse.

Mud fever is common in our climate, but with good care can be prevented and with a combination of veterinary and complementary therapies, treated when it does arise.

Should I be using boots or wraps on my horse?

I’ve been wondering if I should be using some type of boots or wraps when riding/lunging my gelding. I do western riding, usually in an indoor arena with small rocks mixed with sand as footing. It’s a pretty small arena, too. I do W/T/C both lunging and under saddle with him. If I should be using leg protection, what should it be?

I’m lost when it comes to the world of boots and wraps, so hopefully someone can enlighten me!

Preferably, you should use something on the legs. You never know when your horse may accidentally slip and strain himself. The best thing to use would be a boot; wraps require a bit of a technique to use, which I’ll mention later. The best boot type to use would be of the SMB type (Sports Medicine Boot). These are designed to support the horses suspensories, helping to prevent things like bowed tendons. There are a variety of different brands you can use (Legacy- Classic Equine, SMB[1,2,Elite,3]- Professionals Choice, Cobra- Thinline, and other brands like Brookside). I have used all of the ones I mentioned and my overall favorites are the SMB Elites by Professionals choice. With the Legacy boots my horses fidgited while putting them on and while standing in them as well. The Cobra boots by Thinline are decent but they are not contoured to the front/hind limbs like the SMB Elites by PC. The only fault of the SMB Elites is that they are a little pricey; witht that aside though, they will last you a long, long time so in my opinion the money is worth it.

Then there are splint boots. For what you are currently doing you don’t need them. These boots are designed to protect the physical sturctures of the leg, such as skin and bone, from damage if one leg should happen to strike the other at high speed. These boots are easily recognized by some sort of durable material (thick leather, plastic) on the inside portions of the boot and sometimes on the suspensory area as well. These boots are usually reserved for events such as roping and reining.

The reason that I discourage the use of wraps is because they can be downright tricky to use. There is a very precise technique to wraping a horses leg, that, if not followed can lead to serious injuries to the horse such as bowed tendons.

Horse Boots……….?

I have a qustion about horse boots…

What are they used for?

I know they are on the horse for a reason.

In all my 7 years of riding my horses have never needed horse boots or wraps

I’ve put wraps on horses before but never asked what they are for so

what are:

Soaking boots
wraps
ankle boots
hock wraps
front boots
hind boots
sport boots
bell boots
ice wraps

what are they used for and why

thanks

Soaking boots- boot to soak your horse’s hoof for abscesses and other inflammations (it’s just easier than keeping the horses foot in a bucket) you usually add epson salt along with warm water into the boot or bucket.

wraps – wraps can be used for different purposes such as for travel in a trailer so the horse doesn’t get cuts on their legs etc. different types of wraps can be used for medical care as well to keep bandages on cuts, etc.

ankle boots – ankle boots protect the ankle from getting sliced by the other hind foot or shoe. If you horse is doing a lot of galloping and jumping, etc

hock wraps – hock wraps are used for injury wrapping or icing the hock

front boots – well, depending on what your talking about they could be boots for trail riding that actually go on the hoof if a horse is shoeless and tender it is always a plus) or for eventing front boots that go around the tendons are just to protect them.

hind boots – basically the same as I wrote for front boots.

sport boots – sport boots do the same, preventing injury and support/protecting the tendons in the horses lower legs if jumping, galloping, etc.

bell boots-these prevent tearing off the shoe of a front hoof when a horse with shoes on over reaches which could cause clipping or pulling the shoe off. trust me this has happened numerous times with my mare and when ever I go galloping or jumping I use them.

ice wraps- to ice the area, keep down swelling of an area, etc.

hope this helped. it was a good refresher for me!

Polish Your Horse Back Riding Boots To A Brilliant Shine

HOW TO POLISH YOUR BOOTS TO PERFECTION

Ok… I admit I am a little OCD… but it’s part of my routine when I am getting ready for a show or class… I use the quiet time to go over my test and think about my plan… and boy do my boots shine!! Ruth

1. Start with a clean and DRY boot. (Use a salt remover type product, or water, NEVER EVER a SOAP product. SOAP or oiled products will leave a residue and no matter how hard you try, they will never shine!)
2. Only use the old-fashioned boot polish made by KIWI. Use the type that says “PARADE GLOSS”. It has silicone in it shines like crazy and helps shed water.
3. Get some sheet cotton. ONLY COTTON… and wad up a palm size amount in your hand and get it slightly damp with water. Only a few drops of water should come out of your cotton when you start applying the polish.
4. Make sure you polish is warm, or has been sitting in the sun. If it’s raining, or no sun, use a bic lighter to heat the polish for a few seconds.
5. Rub some polish on the damp cotton and rub into your boot. Circles are best for the first few layers. Do NOT apply polish to the inside of the boot!
6. Reapply polish when the cotton looks grey or bluish. Don’t over apply… you are going to put 6 layers on so don’t put it on all at once!
7. Let the boot DRY. Put the boot in the sun in on a heat great, or use a blow dryer. You must not buff the layer until the polish is dry.
8. Buff boot with long, straight, and fast strokes with a soft COTTON cloth or buff brush. Buffing also heats the polish, that’s why you need to do it with elbow grease!
9. Repeat these steps 6 more times, and you will have boots that you can see your smile in … and they won’t be patent leather… just look like it.

How to get dried, caked on mud off my boots?

It’s rained a lot and the pastures are SO muddy. I had to turn in horses though so my boots got caked in mud. I didn’t have time to hose them so now there’s dry mud all over them. how can I get it off?
I really want to get them clean before I go to the barn in the morning. I don’t have brushes or leather conditioner at home.

well when it happens to my boots. make it a bit muddy so the dandy can get deep down into the rubber or leather

Horse Jumps What Are They Composed Of

Horse jumps are the equipment used to set up jumping courses either in a show ring or on a trail. The abilities of horse and rider are both challenged. A beauteous animal jumps over a fence and you want to make sure he can clear it and land safely on the other side. Buy your jumping equipment from reputable manufacturer for safety sake.

In addition to safety, the cost of the jumps and accessories are important. Some companies guarantee a low price and will meet or beat their competition s prices. As long as the buyer gets the same quality, of course he is delighted to pay less.

It is of the utmost importance to buy quality equipment. Wood or PVC, a man made type of plastic material, is used to build the jumps. Horse show planners consider PVC superior in many ways. It cannot rot like wood. It is long lasting and can be left out in inclement weather. It is very durable.

The PVC material itself is more expensive to begin with, but the manufacturing methods are superior to those used with wood. This keeps the price of the finished product lower. Therefore it is preferable.

There are many things about this industry that the average person does not know. There are a variety of types of jumps. Cavalletti jumps are used in dressage exhibitions. The horses trained for dressage, also known as dancing, are different than those used for Western trail competitions for example. Those jumps are similar to natural things found on trail rides, such as logs.

Horse show planners know the specifications for each type of jump. A beginner may want to set up a few low jumps to learn with. You can set of your own jumps if you are cautious. Make sure no nails or sharp protrusions exist in the material you use. Try a cross rail jump with two poles of an upright fence meeting at a cross in the center. This trains the horse to aim his body at the center of all jumps.

A pyramid jump and oxer jump are two other types. Any combination of two or three jumps in a row requires careful measurement of not only the height but the distance between the jumps as measured in strides. An upright fence must be correctly spaces as it is a difficult jump.

Measure the distance between jumps at approximately twelve feet for a horse or ten feet for a pony. Alternatively, you can measure your own horse s exact stride. Use a tape measure and set up the distance between jumps according to your horse.

Never place a pole behind any jump. This will confuse your horse greatly. By creating a false ground line, it makes the horse see the jump as being further back than it is. The judgement of the horse is crucial to avoid jumping being a dangerous activity.

Open water jumps must conform to specific size regulations for different courses. The jumps can be purchased individually or in packages to be set up on site in various ways. There are also additional accessories that include extra rails, cups, wings and flower boxes to create an attractive jumping course with. Although appearance is not the primary consideration, it definitely enhances the look at any horse show.

Horse jumps bring joy to the people watching these magnificent equine competitions. They may or may not appreciate the work and training behind the acquired skills, but they certainly derive pleasure from watching how gracefully they do it. The beauty of the horses is enhanced by an attractive show ring as well.

Help teaching horse to move from pressure when backing up?

I have a horse that has never been trained to take pressure downward (to back up, collect, etc) from a bit. He can be checked up both sides, but when backing up he tosses his head crazily (dangerous) and really cannot stand it. I just started working with him on it.. I’ve been backing up and releasing and patting and working on the ground. Please if you have any other suggestions please do help..any equipment suggestions?

Ok ( : here is how you go about this! I had the same problem with my horse, resiting the bit, throwing his head, and being a total idiot! So my trainer told me maybe I am using too much rein and I should stop pulling but when they are good release. Once you get them doing what you want release. Now back to the problem! First Of all… do a circle in a walk say ‘woop’ or “hoe” to get him to stop cues are very inportant when teaching a horse to back. Once he is at the halt don’t stop keep the horses mind working or he will get bored. Ask him to back by pulling straight back with both of your reins and squeeze with your legs. While he is doing that keep saying “back” and when he does release presure and ask him right back into the walk stop again back and say “Good Boy” and pat him! !!!TIP!!! Never end the training backing the horse trot more and then cool out.

Equestrian Riding Apparel

Have you ever though about riding your horse barefoot, with the wind whipping through your hair? It does sound nice, doesn’t it? However, you might want to think twice about this idea and instead consider some suitable riding apparel. Riding apparel has a very important purpose – keeping you, the rider, safe as you go galloping around.

Boots are a must, whether you are an adherent of the English or Western style of riding. Wearing boots is not just for riding, but for all activities around horses including feeding, grooming, exercising, etc. After all, those hooves are very heavy and if your horse accidentally steps on your toes; well, let’s just say you’ll wish you’d worn boots. For riding, a boot with a heel is the best choice as it will prevent your foot from slipping through the stirrups. However, for working in your stable, you may want to pick up a pair of paddock boots or work boots. They’ll be more sturdy and durable, and often more comfortable.

Not very many people are excited about wearing a riding helmet. After all, one would hardly call them stylish. At the same time, a riding helmet can quite literally be a lifesaver in the event of a fall. Your baseball cap or cowboy hat will not provide adequate protection. Shop for a well-rated helmet specifically designed for horseback riding. Vented models can keep you cooler.

Long pants, breeches or jodhpurs should be worn when riding. They’ll protect your legs from the saddle and horse’s sweat and from brush, sticks and the elements.

In competitive riding, you’ll have to stow your regular riding wear and pull out your show clothes – whether riding English or Western. Each style has clothing requirements, and each season brings new styles. If you aren’t following both the rules and the styles, you’ll find it hard to win ribbons.

If the show you’re riding in asks for hunt seat attire, then you’ll have to wear a riding shirt which is either white or pinstriped. You’ll also need breeches, a hunting cap, dress riding boots and a wool riding jacket. Riding gloves are also customary in these events. Breeches and jacket can be any dark color, but you may want to find out what colors are “in” before making an investment in them. Being out of style may not win you favor with the judges or the audience.

You’ll need to dress formal for dressage riding. You’ll need a white shirt, a stock tie (which should be fastened with a horse-themed pin), white or tan breeches, black jacket and dress boots, as well as a helmet or hunt cap. If it is a saddle seat competition, then you’ll want dark jodhpurs, jodhpur boots, a riding derby, a dark jacket and white riding shirt.

Western riders wear different clothes depending on their gender. Men will need Western shirts, ties, belts (leather with silver buckles), felt cowboy hats, riding boots, jeans and chaps. Women will be attired in Western shirts, vest or jacket, riding boots, felt hats and of course, jeans and chaps. In more intense sports, the ties and silver belt buckles are not required.

Good splint boots or ankle boots?

I’ve been looking for splint boots and ankle boots for the horse I ride. I leased him over the summer but because of school I had to stop leasing…but I still ride him like 3 times a week. I want to get boots for him so he doesnt get hurt and the other girl that rides him uses splint boots in front and ankle boots in back.

Im trying to find a good pair of both (that will work for shows – so no crazy colors) that doesnt make me go bankrupt. from what I can tell so far a good pair of each would be about $40? what is ur favorite brand of boots?

and I found nice ankleboots but ive never heard of the Valena brand before. http://www.adamshorsesupply.com/browse.cfm/4,7624.html

L.a. Weekend Combines Sizzle and Exercise

It’s true that many people look forward to a weekend exodus out of the Big City, but there are others who are looking for an extra dose of energy and excitement and find a place like Los Angeles offers a menu of attractions that makes each visit just a little bit different.

Our recent weekend in L.A. reminded us of just how much there is to see and do in that city at any time of the year. We visited places we knew as well as attractions we were exploring for the first time. We did a lot of things right, but also learned some lessons for future trips to the city. But, most important, we simply had fun.

On this trip we combined a little business with pleasure and that meant I had to be in the city for business before my wife and daughter could join me. Schools nowadays are getting a little touchy about letting kids out for their parents’ vacations or getaways, even though we still maintain our eight-year-old daughter is indeed learning something every time she travels.

So we decided my family would join me, after school was out, by taking the Amtrak train from the San Diego area into L.A. where I would pick them up. The trip up on the train was just a couple of hours, so that part went fine. The problem was it took me only slightly less time to travel from Santa Monica to the downtown LA train station. That’s 15 miles in one hour, 45 minutes. You do the math.

Note to travel diary: Never plan to do any L.A. driving on a late Friday afternoon. Weekend visits should start Friday morning or Saturday morning – but not Friday afternoon.

Aside from that little miscalculation, our trip from that point forward was fun, relaxed and full of interesting things to do. We checked into the Hotel Oceana, a completely updated, upscale lodging on Santa Monica’s picturesque Ocean Avenue, where our third-floor suite had spectacular views of the ocean and, in the distance, Catalina Island. This hotel proved to be ideally located near the beach as well as the popular Downtown Third Street Promenade shopping district.

The mood of the Hotel Oceana is colorful and breezy and what you would expect to find in a Caribbean resort. Entering our suite, we were struck by the colors – bright yellows, greens, pinks – and by the spaciousness. If you’re looking for a suite that has lots of room to move around in, this is your place. The bedroom was a typical size, but the living room area had room for a couch, table and chairs, and then another whole section of the room that had a small dining table, mini-bar, and work desk.

Both rooms had picture windows offering panoramic views of the ocean. A big-screen flat panel television also was available, and the bath area was also unusually spacious with a tile bathtub enclosure as well as a European spa-style shower. A double marble vanity rounded out the stylish bathroom décor.

Such attractive accommodations just seem to put you in the right mood for a weekend of exploration and good times. After dinner and an early turn-in, we were up early Saturday ready to spend some time in Santa Monica as well as at nearby attractions we had selected.

Santa Monica is a playground for L.A. TV and movie people that is all neatly compressed into 8.3 miles strategically bordered by the Santa Monica Mountains on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other. The words “trendy” and “hip” seem to pop up a lot in the descriptions of the some 400 restaurants packed into this little piece of real estate. Throw in a few art galleries, some luxury hotels and – oh yes – celebrities, and you have the makings of an eye-popping diversion from your everyday hometown.

As we took a short walk to the Santa Monica Pier, it seemed like half of L.A. was down here jogging or walking. Wide, tree-lined and well-landscaped Ocean Avenue stretches along the coastline offering about as pretty a downtown street as you’ll see considering this is all modern office buildings and not historic mansions.

The Santa Monica Pier is the dominant feature on the water’s edge – and also over the water — and is a favorite for families. The pier is home to a variety of fascinating tourist shops, carnival rides, seafood and other restaurants and even a trapeze school that was drawing a crowd every time one of the students would go up and risk life and limb to swing on the high trapeze.

Only a short walk from the pier is the popular Downtown Third Street Promenade, a pedestrian mall that is the center attraction in Santa Monica. There are fascinating shops and an unusual number of movie theaters along this walkway that seems to attract people from all walks of life – young and old, wealthy on down to the homeless.

Santa Monica is only a few miles from Hollywood so, just for fun, we decided to drive over to the Hollywood Museum, near the intersection of Highland Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard in the heart of Hollywood. The museum does not advertise much and has been building its business through word of mouth and walk-in traffic since it opened just a few years ago. People are starting to figure out that this four-story museum is a must-visit for the movie buff who wants to see a treasure trove of Hollywood props and memorabilia.

The items on display cover both movies and television and span the history of motion pictures. You’ll see things like Sylvester Stallone’s boxing gloves from Rocky, or a complete selection of Marilyn Monroe’s dresses, or the actual jail cell where Anthony Hopkins was incarcerated in the Silence of the Lambs. Big displays are presented for movies like Dreamgirls, Gone with the Wind, Planet of the Apes and many more. Walls are lined with old Hollywood publicity photos of the stars and famous Hollywood restaurants and haunts. Located in the old Max Factor building, the museum truly is a trip down memory lane and is well worth spending an hour or two immersing yourself in all things Hollywood.

On Sunday, we drove over to another L.A. attraction we had always wanted to visit: Will Rogers State Historic Park, just three miles from our base at the Hotel Oceana. The famous writer and celebrity made his home in Beverly Hills, but had a weekend ranch in the hills above Sunset Boulevard. Rogers moved to the ranch in 1928 and eventually the small original cottage was enlarged to its present size of 31 rooms. Rogers loved horses and the entire household has a Western feel with its Indian rugs and baskets, saddles and even a polo field on the property where Rogers could indulge in one of his favorite pastimes. The park service offers a brief 20-minute tour of the house that is both interesting and entertaining.

A lot of people visit the Will Rogers State Historic Park simply to take advantage of the park-like grounds and the trails you can walk on the 186-acre property. We took the loop trail, which is a moderate hike that offers panoramic views of Santa Monica and the Hollywood Hills – a great place to get a little exercise while sampling what seem to be an endless number of L.A. attractions.

AT A GLANCE

WHERE: Santa Monica is just west of Los Angeles and on the coast south of Malibu. It’s easy to reach by taking Interstate 405 or Interstate 5 to Interstate 10 and driving west.

WHAT: Santa Monica’s a great base of operations for a myriad of attractions, from Hollywood to Malibu.

WHEN: The weather in Los Angeles is sunny most of the year – about 343 annual days of sunshine to be exact – so there’s no bad time to visit.

WHY: The scenery’s great, but there’s also an electricity that comes with a getaway so close to celebrities and the entertainment business.

HOW: For more information on Santa Monica, phone the Santa Monica Convention & Visitors Bureau at 800-544-5319 or visit www.santamonica.com. For more information on the Hotel Oceana, please go to www.hoteloceanasantamonica.com or phone 310-393-0486.

My mother is planning a poker run road-trip and giving us half the boat to the person who has the best hand, and we're giving away prizes for everyone else. They must be things that are somewhat related to the horse, but not as sunbathing, because most participants are children who do not have a horse of his own. I thought to give a bag to put a helmet, gloves, etc. I think door-key horse and gloves would also be cheap. What do you think would be a good price?

You can try: "Horse-key cards -Certificates/gift-Horse-Horse The shirts / clothing related clalenders -Belts/buckles-caballo, notebooks, etc-brushes-movie classic books related to horses (can often be found in the area dollar goal for as little as $ 2!) If I come, I'll add more!

I-Saddles: Differences Between Horse Riding Saddles (part 1)

Horse Saddle: I am the lovely piece of work placed on the horse’s back for riders to sit upon. I ensure stability for both the rider and the horse, and distribute the weight of the rider evenly on the horse’s back. I come in many different forms, numerous enough to make your head spin. My variations are shaped in regards to location [in terms of English, Australian, Western, German etc], tree types [in terms of Wade, flex Tree, treeless etc], production technique [handmade custom or manufactured], materials [Leather or synthetic], activity [parading, roping, show, endurance, racing, trail, reining etc] etc.

English Saddle: I am the saddle used to ride horses in “English riding” disciplines world wide. Though with an English background, I am not limited in use by English speaking countries or in England alone. I have features that make me unique and stand out as envy in the equestrian world. My Stirrups can be detached from the saddle [in case of an emergency]. I have a piece of equipment known as a girth, which is used to keep me in place on a horse. It passes under the barrel of the equine, usually attached to me on both sides by two or three leather straps called billets. My rare end has a subtle and not-too-obvious feature known as the cantle. This is used to provide greater comfort and security to riders. I generally cover a smaller surface area, yet have proven to be more effective with simplicity. Much of the weight bearing area in me is supported by a large internal flocking inside the panels.

Australian saddle: I am the saddle used for activities requiring long hours on the horse. I came as a variation of the English saddle eons ago, but have soon developed my own uniqueness as time went by. I have a distinct feature known as the Knee pad [aka 'poleys'] to provide security for riders who ride in rough conditions & spend long hours on horses. The ‘poleys’ are usually located around a rider’s thigh in front of the saddle. I was designed to cater for the conditions ranging from soothing to the harshest. My seats are deeper than the typical English saddle and my cantle higher. I am kept on with a girth attached to the billets under the flaps.

Western Saddle: I am the saddle used for Western Riding in the United States of America, mainly in the ‘western’ part. I am often tagged with the ‘cowboy’ name. I was designed to provide both security & comfort to riders and their horses traveling long hours in harsh environment. I fancy being flashy and different, I tend not to like ’simplicity’, because I pride myself at being unique and robust. I don’t call my girths ‘girths’ [you bet] but cinch. My Stirrups cannot be detached from me in an emergency, but instead I have a wider tread; combined with the rider’s high-heeled boots. The design minimizes the risk that the rider will slip through the stirrups during a fall, and the rider being dragged. My cantle is one of the most obvious of all horse saddles, providing greater comfort and security. I cover a wider surface area than the Typical English or Australian saddle. My cinch is tied on with a flat strap of leather or nylon known as a latigo. I have no padding between the tree and the external leather and fleece skirting… Okay, okay, it seems I brag a lot, but really, I am truly unique because I am the most ‘modified’ and truly customized to suit rider’s tastes. And I am often used for ’show’ purposes. Yeah, I show-off a lot! But there are no ‘best’ kinds of saddles anywhere, only suitable and familiar ones.

Horse: I am the tamed animal Humans ride upon. I know not of western, English, Australian, Portuguese, German or even youth saddles. I only know it when my back hurts if the seating equipment placed on it pokes my spine or is not properly fitted- I ‘neighhhhhhh’ at the rider, indicating pain and discomfort- and I know when it does not. I love humans, and would give my full agility and beauty to the ones who seat on me properly.

Horse riding boots… Why would someone wear tall boots instead of paddock or jodphur boots?

Tall boots just seem like a pain and are expensive. Is there any practical reason for tall boots?

They keep your pants material still so that your legs aren’t affected by your pants riding up. But it’s much more comfortable to wear half chaps instead of tall boots.

I wore tall boots with jeans for a while because I hadn’t bought half chaps yet. I needed tall boots for showing, but I was still pretty new to the riding thing and hadn’t gotten half chaps and paddock boots. So I wore my tall boots with jeans when I rode. As soon as I got half chaps, I quit wearing my tall boots. Before shows I always try to slip into my boots and breeches just to get comfortable wearing them again before the show.

Men’s Riding Jackets

Whether you are a seasoned equestrian or a casual rider, what you wear makes an impact on your riding, comfort and confidence. While purchasing your riding apparel, be it jackets, breeches or boots, extra care must be exercised. Comfort is the main criterion while buying men’s riding jackets. If you are not comfortable in the jacket you wear, it will affect your performance.

Another thing to consider while purchasing men’s riding jackets is the fitting. More than the appearance of the jacket, it is its fitting on the rider that decides the impression the rider makes on the onlookers. A loose or too-tight jacket can make you look unprofessional and even affects your riding, whereas a jacket that fits properly makes the rider look professional and stylish. Hence, while buying a jacket make sure you get one where there is plenty of space for hand and body movement. At the same time it should look as if it is custom made for you.

Also it is best to avoid jackets that are the cheapest you can buy, because durability and quality do carry a price tag. When it comes to men’s riding jackets, workmanship and quality material are far more important than cost. Most often they will be a one time investment, and therefore you need to give more attention to quality and appearance than the price tag.

For men’s riding jackets, there are many reputed brands like Georg Schumacher, Pikeur, Equetech and John Whitaker that provide jackets in different styles and designs. A good brand ensures durability and comfort. Men’s riding jackets are available in different styles, such as with or without a velvet collar, regular pockets or zip pockets, light weight for summer or lined jackets for winter, etc. These are all available in different sizes and colours. Jackets made of windproof and waterproof fabric make riding comfortable in any weather. Georg Schumacher offers casual jackets that change from season to season.

Is my Western poem, The Gunfight funny?

I rode into this one horse town
And off my horse my boots go down
I step into this one saloon
But they said they’d be closing soon

It’s not that it is getting late
There’s a gunfight going that won’t wait
I think I’ll stay and stick around
Just to see the one that will go down

The gunfight will go on at noon
I check my watch, it’s coming soon
I see two men with holsters on
We’ll see which gun is fastest drawn

They stare each other in the face
The town is there, they pack the place
A preacher says some lines he read
Two mother’s pray alone instead

They then look each other in the eye
Two shots ring out, and one will die
The one shot low, last breath he vented
I told him high, this suit is rented

Oh too lengthy my dear !

Horse Care – Boots Vs. Bandages

An ongoing debate in the equine community is whether it is better to use boots or bandages when working your horse. While both sides have a point, the right answer is not based on the products themselves, but the purpose for which you are using them.

Many people choose to use boots or bandages as protection. There are many things that can cause damage to a horse’s legs while working, from ramming into the rails of a fence, to twisting, to banging a tendon with an errant hind foot.

If you are looking for protection, boots are likely your best choice. There are several types of boots that are designed to protect the horse’s legs when working. Brushing boots, for example, are designed to protect the inside of the cannon and fetlock against interference from either a hind leg, or the other front leg. If you horse tends to wing or otherwise travel crookedly, brushing boots offer great protection. Tendon boots are designed to protect the tendons, while leaving the front of the leg open. This is so that a jumper can feel the rails he hits, while he is protected from accidentally hitting his tendons as he works.

On the other hand, many people wish to offer their horse support. Other than Sports Medicine Boots, most boots do not offer any support at all. If support is required, it is more sensible to consider bandages.

Polo wraps, probably the most common wraps used on working horses, offer a small amount of support. If wrapped properly, they gently support the fetlock, easing the strain on the suspensory ligaments. This support is minimal though, and many feel that it is better to do without. While there are elastic wraps available for performance support, it is far too easy to apply them incorrectly and cause more harm than good.

If you are seeking strong support, Sports Medicine Boots are probably your best option. Designed with support in mind, these boots offer an amazing amount of support for the suspensories and some even claim that that have helped to heal debilitating injuries.

Boots also have the advantage that it is difficult to put them on wrong. Wraps on the other hand can be misapplied and can cause serious damage. If you are not experienced with wrapping a horse, it is wise to have an experienced horse person show you how to apply a wrap before trying on your own.

There really isn’t a right or wrong answer as to which is better. Boots and bandages both have their uses, and always will. Choose the product that best suits your horse’s needs, and learn how to apply them properly. That way your horse will get the support and protection he needs, and you will be able to rest assured that you have done your best for him.

And finally, no matter what you choose to use – boots or bandages – remember that when shopping for them, a product research should be done as well. Your horse comfort should always be the main priority, so buying the cheapest items or unknown brands may not worth compromising your horse feet.

bands in the exercise or not?

in the performance of a horse on the sand should always be careful with the bandages? if not, why?

With bands, less use the better. Unless you need the protection against bumps and scratches, exclude. The only proper way to state horse for the competition is to perform the tasks required to compete, and let your blood vessels, bones, joints, tendons and ligaments develop its potential strength they need for competition. Whenever you sell or from interfering with the potential ability of these structures to develop force. The heat is itself created by coats and boots will be against-productive. Let-off, as far as possible, and if you use them, remove immediately after training legs and cold water pipe to reduce heat in the heart of the tendons, which can degenerate fibers. Less is more with it. Obviously, it is possible to be protected injury, but the "support" is not the goal. SMEs with support the projectile are the best choices when it competes, and offer the most comprehensive delivery of lower risk. This is based on research, and veterinary consensus. But not boot or bandage provides strong support to prevent tendon and ligament tears ….. Packing only what.
