The Broadway transfer of the National Theatre’s War Horse, the moving first world war story of a farm boy and his horse, where the puppet and human actors regularly leave their audience drenched in tears, has scooped best play – and four other accolades – at this year’s Tony awards in New York.

There were also laurels for another very British production, Jerusalem, Jez Butterworth’s anarchic Arcadian fantasy first seen at the Royal Court, which won best actor for its star, Mark Rylance. Rylance’s extraordinary performance as the charming, dangerous, drug-dealing and tale-telling Rooster Byron has been the talk of Broadway – and his performance at the Tonys ceremony on Sunday night matched it.

He quoted a prose poem by the American poet Louis Jenkins in his acceptance speech – just as he did three years ago when he also took the best actor Tony, for Boeing-Boeing – explaining later that he thought things had got a bit boring.

“Unlike flying or astral projection, walking through walls is a totally earth-related craft, but a lot more interesting than pot-making or driftwood lamps,” he recited, words taken from Jenkins’s Walking Through A Wall. “The worst things are wire fences, maybe it’s the molecular structure of the alloy or just the amount of give in a fence, I don’t know, but I’ve torn my jacket and lost my hat in a lot of fences.”

Dominic Cooke, artistic director of the Royal Court, which is co-producing the show on Broadway, said: “Mark thoroughly deserves the recognition he has received today. His Johnny ‘Rooster’ Byron is a tour de force and his performance remains with you long after the show is over.”

War Horse, which has been a phenomenal success since it opened at the National Theatre in 2007, is based on the 1982 children’s novel by Michael Morpurgo, about a farm boy from Devon who follows his beloved horse into the maelstrom of the first world war.

It took a total of five Tonys, including one for Handspring, the company that created the extraordinary puppets. The best director prize was shared by Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris, who at the customarily tear-sodden theatrical get-together, said: “We quite like it when people cry.”

War Horse is still running in the West End, where it has sold more than £1m worth of tickets, and is selling out on Broadway every night. A film adaptation by Steven Spielberg, using real horses, is due for release later this year.

The biggest winner of the night, with nine awards, was an improbable – and, to some, bitterly controversial – religious-themed musical, The Book of Mormon, created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the team behind the blackly humorous animation South Park. Parker thanked Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormon church: “You did it, Joseph!” he cried, looking towards the heavens. There are plans for a London production next year.

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, the most talked about musical on Broadway, for all the wrong reasons, featured in the awards albeit only in a performance by some of the cast. The show, based on the comic book character, and with music by Bono and the Edge of U2, was ineligible for nomination because, a year after its original planned opening, after innumerable rewrites, cast injuries, losing its original director, and more than six months of previews, it has yet to open officially.

There’s a box down at the bottom of the page where you can put in HTML codes for pictures or backgrounds. It’s easiest if you use layouts or pictures that already are coded for HTML. Any collector of sports memorabilia knows that anything that has to do with old-time baseball wins hands down to any other sport. Of course, it’s been around the longest with the bubble gum cards, the bats, the balls and anything and everything that can be autographed. Let’s face it, I haven’t seen any pricey tennis, golf or horse racing trading cards anywhere. Have you?

Now, as far as NFL merchandise that’s vintage and carries a steep price tag? I would have to say the autographed and authentically worn football jersey from any Hall of Fame player or superstar would be top of the list. The current card that holds the ranks is a mint or near mint condition of a 1948 Sammy Baugh card, racking in about $500,000 if you happen to own one that is of pristine condition. A 1935 National Chicle #34 Bronko Nagurski card was sold at an auction in 2008 in almost mint condition for $66,354.

When you get into the jerseys department, most of the items range from $300 up to $2,000 depending on the player of course, how long he played, if he’s in the Hall of Fame and if it’s just a signed jersey instead of one that was actually worn during games, which usually ends up being the case. Helmets are pretty much in the same price category and again, rarely do you find one that’s all scuffed and worn from banging heads in the trenches, so the item itself is just something someone autographed and not actually used at any time. Super Bowl coins and photomints can be expensive as well since the coins are usually gold or silver and actually are worth something the longer you hang onto them and are somewhat rare and only so many were made just like trading cards. Footballs work just like jerseys and helmets. Most are just never used game balls and signed but every now and then you can find an actual game ball that was used in college or a pro game garnering a superstar’s name. The price shifts a few hundred to a few thousand easily when it’s an actual ball used in the game itself rather than a ball that was just pulled out of a bag sitting over on the sideline.

There’s a lot to look for when buying NFL memorabilia, or any memorabilia. The rarer it is, the older it is, the less quantity of the item there is makes a huge difference when buying or selling. Being in the computer age, one has to be very careful of “fakes” and replicas as well since the technology is advanced enough to pull off counterfeits. Don’t be fooled.

Definitely read “The Heavenly Horse from the Outermost West” and “Piper at the Gate” by Mary Stanton. They are very well written fantasy story starring horses, kind of along the vein of “Watershiup Down.” Really good stuff.

“Black Beauty” by Anna Sewell is geared toward a slightly younger audience, however it is beautifully written and a must-read for horse lovers. It really puts you into the innocent yet intelligent mindset of a horse.

“Equus” by Peter Shaffer. This is a rather dark and sometimes even disturbing play about a disturbed youth with an obsession for horses.

The process is simple – when you do something you love, your mind would shut off the problems that worry you and revel in the pleasure generated by the activity you enjoy. When your mind is off problems, your body relaxes and your mind is able to think with more clarity. This means you short-circuit an impending anxiety attack and are very likely to find a solution to your problems. Isn’t that called a win-win situation?

Some people know what gives them pleasure to do – and cultivate this activity as a hobby or leisure time occupation.  What about people who are undecided about what they would really like to do? If you are surprised at this, don’t. There are many people out there who have never thought about it hard enough to identify what they would like to do for pleasure. Well, finding out is easy. Ask yourself this question, ‘If I had all the money in the world and did not have to work for a living, what work would give me the most pleasure?’  Do not look for one answer – because there would be many swimming in your mind and if you are looking for one answer you would be disappointed enough to stop searching.

Make a list of all the possibilities that pop up in your mind. Stop when you reach at reach at 20. Keep the list where you can see it every day. Give yourself a month to identify what you love to do. In the meantime, take out the list everyday and add or delete suggestions from it, aiming to narrow it down to 10 favorite activities – if you can reduce to less it would be even better. Once you have a list of 10 items prioritize these in order of your preference, the best one first. Now, the list would be do-able.  Establish a time at least once a week where you would take up one or more of the activities on your list. Keep doing this until you identify what gives you the most pleasure among them all. Please keep in mind that you could choose more than one hobby.

Here are some examples of creative and fun-filled hobbies:

2.    Creative writing – poems, snippets, how-to books, short stories, chicken-soup stuff, memoirs

3.    Painting/ learning to paint

4.    Drawing cartoons/ animation/ sketching

5.    Model building – ships, airplanes, cars, buildings, and the like

6.    Traveling to see the world

7.    Traveling to learn about different customs and people

8.    Historical traveling

9.    Traveling to discover the taste of the world – for food lovers

10.    Cooking/ baking

11.    Stitching/ embroidering/ tailoring

12.    Swimming/ skiing/ ice-skating/ any outdoor sport you love

13.    Indoor sports – chess, carom, bowling, table tennis, billiards

14.    Chatting on the Net

15.    Surfing the Net

16.    Singing/ playing an instrument/ learning to sing or play an instrument

17.    Woodworking/ carpentry

18.    Mechanic work/ working on cars, motorcycles

19.    Horse riding

20.    Training animals

These are only a handful of things you could do. The list is endless. You need to allow yourself enough time to identify the one or two activities that give you the most pleasure. Once you found it out, pour in all efforts to make it a full-time hobby. Ensure that every weekend you have a couple of hours reserved for your ‘battery re-charging time’ when you indulge in your pleasure.

You will find that as you channel your creativity into the chosen hobby(ies) you would feel more relaxed, tolerant of your mistakes and those of others, slower to anger and worry, and more productive. This is because when you are happy, your brain actually works more effectively.  As you cannot cry and laugh at the same time, so you would not be able to feel anxious and relaxed at the same time. As your hobby would take root and you discover yourself through it, you would find that your anxiety or panic attacks become lesser and lesser both in intensity and number.

The Key Horse Handicapping Method For Profitable Bets

While I am not a big fan of exotic bets I also realize that many people enjoy playing them and a few individuals actually make a profit on them. I like the win bet but some people prefer exactas, pick threes, pick fours, pick sixes and other gadget bets. This article will focus on exotic bets that involve multiple races, the pick three, four, and six.

The important thing to realize about exotic bets is that unless you play a straight ticket, you are buying a lot of losing combinations. The more combinations you buy, the more likely you are to cash the ticket but it also means you need a bigger payoff to come out ahead. Trifecta players who key on one horse manage to pare the number of combinations down considerably, but in an eight horse race there are still 336 possible combinations.

Playing the pick three or pick four makes sense if you can single on a horse in at least one race. A pick six bet requires at least two such horses that you can single on. The idea with exotic bets is to find one good reliable horse to key and then have it win with a few long shots in the other legs of your pick three or pick four bet. This isn’t exactly original thinking and many people attempt this very strategy every day.

If you want to try this strategy then your goal is to first find a few key horses. The best way to find a key horse is to respect the statistics that stand up across all tracks and the test of time. It may mean that you have to handicap a few programs to find the right horses, but when you do, you’ll have very good key horses. Since you are using them in multiple race exotics, it won’t matter so much if they are going off at low odds.

The first thing I look for in a key horse, is a horse that has succeeded at what it is being asked to do. It sounds silly but there are races almost every day where only one horse has actually won at the distance and level that it is being asked to run at today. They win at surprisingly good odds and they win often.

An example of a horse who faced very little competition and was part of some nice exotic payoffs was, Omaha Beach, running from post position number 4 in the 8th race at Philadelphia Park on March 30, 2009. Omaha Beach was returning after an impressive victory just 20 days prior to that event and therefore was racing within 30 days of his last race, another important statistic to keep in mind.

Only 5 horses started in that race and of them, only one other, the 1, Tin Soldier, had managed to win a race at Philadelphia at that distance. Omaha Beach’s last speed figure was 94 a full 6 points higher than any other horse in the race and he went off at 6-5 odds and only paid $4.40 to win. But using the same horse in exotics like the pick three and a double netted big payoffs.

The double for the winner of the 8th race with the winner of the 9th race paid $50. The winner of the 9th race, New Identity, went off at 6-1 odds. Not exactly an extreme longshot and a horse that logically had to be included in an exotic bet, being the fourth favorite in the morning line.

Looking at the 7th race with a winner that paid $9.40, the 8th race with our favorite that paid $4.40, and the 9th race with the $14.40 winner, it was not an extremely difficult exotic bet to put together and yet the pick three paid $188. Just being wise enough to key on the 4, Omaha Beach, because he met the recency rule of having raced within 30 days and because only one other horse had managed to do what was being asked of them, you could hit a $50 double and a pick three without a lot of difficulty.

It is common sense, find a horse that is capable of doing what is asked and also, one that is racing back off a good solid effort within 309 days.

Horse Racing School, Introductry level?

Is there any information or books that reference to introduction for horse racing school? I am looking for reference books about the horse rider not the gambling. Also, some information may lead to the behavior of a horse during the racing which may cause the rider to adjust different situations.

You mean jockey school? While there is such as thing as an apprentice jockey training program, it probably doesn’t apply to you.

Jockeys work in the stable of the trainer they are contracted to..they learn everything there. If good enough, they might get to ride in races.

EDIT: Sorry I am not in USA, but I know about racing…having at one time lived in Newmarket, England…..I think you should find a way to meet a trainer, get his advice. The weight requirement for an apprentice is 48kg or less…not more than 105 pounds.

Book Review – I Golfed Across Mongolia by Andre Tolme

While strolling through a book warehouse recently, I spotted a book with bright red letters on the cover which looked like a postcard.  The title read I Golfed Across Mongolia, and I was extremely intrigued by the book.  Written by Andre Tolme, the book is 262 pages long and easy to read.  It is divided into eighteen chapters with fairly large words and well-spaced lines on every page. 

Andre Tolme was a typical, well-paid Civil Engineer living in New Hampshire with a strong interest in golf, which he tried to do every weekend.  He also had a very strong interest in traveling, having visited over fifty countries in his lifetime.  After traveling to Mongolia and seeing how the landscape was inviting for golf, he decided to do something crazy; he would quit his job for a year and try to golf across the entire country of Mongolia. 

Most golf fanatics wish they could play golf every day, but jobs and family usually do not allow us to play so often.  Tolme felt the same way, and asked his boss for a leave of absence so he could go on his golf expedition.  His boss graciously allowed him to take a break from work and return to work when the expedition was over if he chose to do so.  Tolme went on a shopping spree where he bought the essentials such as hiking shoes, approximately 500 golf balls, a sturdy tent, and a GPS system, and took off for Mongolia. 

Overall, the expedition would take approximately three months by Tolme’s calculations and would traverse over 1200 miles.  He figured he could take about 120 to 140 shots every day with only a 3-iron and walk about 20 kilometers and meet his goal in 90 days.  After getting off to a slow start, he started to meet his daily quota, sometimes even surpassing his expected number of shots and kilometers. 

After a few days though, he started to experience serious problems.  The main issue was the massive blisters forming on his feet.  As you can imagine, walking 1,200 miles will take a toll on your feet.  Tolme’s blisters were so bad that he was forced to cut them open himself and place salt on them per his friend’s instructions.  His aching feet were an issue during the entire trip, but he dealt with the pain and pushed on.  Also, he found that lifting his 40 to 60 pound pack 140 times per day was extremely tiring.  His back began to hurt so bad that he started to think about other ways which he could get his pack from one shot to the next without lifting it himself. 

Tolme’s solution came in the form of a cart.  He had considered horses, camels, vehicles, and other people, but his best solution was a small cart.  Between shots he would simply place his club on the cart and push it 200 yards or so to where his ball stopped rolling.  Almost immediately though, he found that pushing the cart was even worse than continuously lifting his heavy bag.  The cart would get caught on grass clumps and was positioned at a weird angle making pushing it up and down hills awkward.  Therefore, he gave the cart away to a stranger in a different town, and started relying on humans. 

Andre Tolme hired two caddies in his travels across Mongolia.  He found local men through people he knew who were happy to use their jeeps to drive him several hundred miles at a time.  A man named Khatanbaatar was especially helpful.  This local Mongolian man gave Andre pointers about which direction he should be hitting his golf ball, served as a communicator to other Mongolians, helped him find food and water, and protected him when wind storms and questionable-looking locals arrived.  Tolme’s journey across Mongolia would have been nearly impossible if it weren’t for the help of men like Khatanbaatar. 

Tolme eventually meets his goal after 12,170 shots in a city called Khovd.  When asked how he felt by a man he had met on his travels who found him in Khovd, Tolme tells him that he is simply, “Tired.”  The journey has taken a large physical and mental toll on Tolme and he was very glad to be done.  When asked why he even embarked on the journey in the first place, he said, “To raise awareness.”  This is a very vague response, but that is how Tolme intended it.  After completing his trek across Mongolia, he realized that he did not need a solid reason to embark on the journey.  He knew that people now know where Mongolia is because of the publicity he provided, how decent its people are, and that you can really learn a great deal about the world and yourself by completely taking a change of pace in life. 

Although this book is simple and silly at times, it is a very entertaining story about a country and people that many of us do not understand.  Mongolia is a country that has basic people who will offer you food and water even if they do not have much themselves.  The land is bare with periodic rivers and desert and largely uninhabited.  Tolme constantly tells his readers how a random Mongolian would ride up to him or invite him to their tent home and give him their prime pieces of meat and water.  The hospitality he received is refreshing and the insight he received on humanity and how to step back from life every once in a while is what I will remember most from reading I Golfed Across Mongolia.  I rate this book a 3.5 out of 5.
