War Horse storms to victory at Tony awards

Tony awards host Neil Patrick Harris rides a puppet from War Horse. Photograph: Kevin Kane/WireImage for Tony Awards

The Broadway transfer of the National Theatre’s War Horse, the moving first world war story of a farm boy and his horse, where the puppet and human actors regularly leave their audience drenched in tears, has scooped best play – and four other accolades – at this year’s Tony awards in New York.

There were also laurels for another very British production, Jerusalem, Jez Butterworth’s anarchic Arcadian fantasy first seen at the Royal Court, which won best actor for its star, Mark Rylance. Rylance’s extraordinary performance as the charming, dangerous, drug-dealing and tale-telling Rooster Byron has been the talk of Broadway – and his performance at the Tonys ceremony on Sunday night matched it.

He quoted a prose poem by the American poet Louis Jenkins in his acceptance speech – just as he did three years ago when he also took the best actor Tony, for Boeing-Boeing – explaining later that he thought things had got a bit boring.

“Unlike flying or astral projection, walking through walls is a totally earth-related craft, but a lot more interesting than pot-making or driftwood lamps,” he recited, words taken from Jenkins’s Walking Through A Wall. “The worst things are wire fences, maybe it’s the molecular structure of the alloy or just the amount of give in a fence, I don’t know, but I’ve torn my jacket and lost my hat in a lot of fences.”

Dominic Cooke, artistic director of the Royal Court, which is co-producing the show on Broadway, said: “Mark thoroughly deserves the recognition he has received today. His Johnny ‘Rooster’ Byron is a tour de force and his performance remains with you long after the show is over.”

War Horse, which has been a phenomenal success since it opened at the National Theatre in 2007, is based on the 1982 children’s novel by Michael Morpurgo, about a farm boy from Devon who follows his beloved horse into the maelstrom of the first world war.

It took a total of five Tonys, including one for Handspring, the company that created the extraordinary puppets. The best director prize was shared by Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris, who at the customarily tear-sodden theatrical get-together, said: “We quite like it when people cry.”

War Horse is still running in the West End, where it has sold more than £1m worth of tickets, and is selling out on Broadway every night. A film adaptation by Steven Spielberg, using real horses, is due for release later this year.

The biggest winner of the night, with nine awards, was an improbable – and, to some, bitterly controversial – religious-themed musical, The Book of Mormon, created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the team behind the blackly humorous animation South Park. Parker thanked Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormon church: “You did it, Joseph!” he cried, looking towards the heavens. There are plans for a London production next year.

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, the most talked about musical on Broadway, for all the wrong reasons, featured in the awards albeit only in a performance by some of the cast. The show, based on the comic book character, and with music by Bono and the Edge of U2, was ineligible for nomination because, a year after its original planned opening, after innumerable rewrites, cast injuries, losing its original director, and more than six months of previews, it has yet to open officially.

Horse Shed Plans – Yes, You Absolutely Need Them!

No matter how large or small you plan to build your shed or barn, horse shed plans should be the number one item on your list. Once equipped with a good set of plans, your barn will be a guaranteed success.

Some folks, especially on smaller projects, think they will be able to draw their own horse barn plans or use free ones from the internet, and complete construction in a few weekends. While this is do-able if you have extensive woodworking experience, this will be very difficult for your average Joe or Jane.

Free plans found on the internet are usually a ploy to get you to purchase something else from the ‘plan givers’ website. They are usually thrown together and are not meant for actual construction.

Professional plans will cost you around $50, but will save you money in the long run. A side from being very easy to use, they come complete with two very important items, a materials list and cut sheet.

A materials list is exactly what it sounds like. A list of items needed to complete the shed, but this list is the key to saving money on your shed construction.

First, this list takes the guess work out of shopping for materials. You end up with the exact amount that you need with no waste. Second, you can take this list to multiple hardware stores or lumber yards for a cost estimate. Let the store know that you are comparing prices and a lot of times they will give you deep discounts!

The cut sheet will give you diagrams of how to cut your wood. This sheet will ensure that all of your lumber is used with very little waste material left over. With these two items in your arsenal, there’s no way that your project can fail.

Horse shed plans can be found in various different places online and in stores, but don’t pull out your cash just yet! Before purchasing shed plans, there are a few items to consider, such as ventilation, lighting, and flooring to name a few.

For tips on selecting your horse shed plans visit http://www.squidoo.com/horse-barn-designs

Horse shelter made from dog kennel….

Okay, can you make a horse shelter from a dog kennel?

It isn’t meant to be a shelter to protect from cold and stuff because we don’t have to worry about that in the climate we are in.

It is meant more as a means of keeping rain out. Like could you use a dog kennel and then get something to cover it with?

Would a horse go through the doorway (it will fit physically but would it be willing to?)
It is a large kennel-there isn’t an issue of space or anything.

You can depending on the size of the horse. You can use a tarp over it temporarily.

The bad thing about it, is that if the horse is inside and rolls or paws at the sides of the kennel, it might get a hoof caught through it.

You can build a 3 sided shelter for not much. All you would need is 4 large post for the corners, some 2″ x4″, and some sheet metal. You can look up building plans on line.

Online Horse Classifieds Great for Horse Buying Research

Buying a horse can be a very time consuming endeavor, with all the different horse breeds and skills to choose from. The more you become familiar with the process of buying and selling horses, the better your chances will be to end up with the horse to fit your needs. There are many avenues to look for the horse you want, like a local barn, tack shops, newspaper classifieds, and now you can go online and look through thousands of horse for sale classifieds. Take your time and don’t get to overwhelmed. If you make the selection process in a hurry, you might make an unwise purchase. Plan to take from one month to one year to find your ideal horse. Understandably, if you are without a horse, one year mite sound like a very long time, but you can use this time to become more knowledgeable about what you want by taking lessons.

The first thing you must determine is what you really want from a horse, and to what extent you will be using him/her. Will the horse be a trustworthy companion or wonderful Dressage prospect? Buy taking the time and comparing the different classified ads presented to you, will help determine your priorities. Be sure to use the advanced search features each online classified horse website has to offer, this will help you to narrow down your search results.

Once you have found the horse you want, its always a good idea to get a professional opinion when you are buying a horse. Whether or not you use an agent to help you select your horse, you should always have a basic veterinary pre-purchase exam performed. When you seek out professional advice, pay for it and then listen to it! When your instructor or veterinarian cautions you about a horse, it is for a reason. When seeking advice, it is best to a well-respected professional that has no vested interest in the horse sale.

Here is a breakdown of what to look for when a horse is for sale:

    * does the horse fit your needs
* what skills does the horse possess
* does the horse have a good temperament
* do comparisons of other similar horses
* does the horse fit the selling price
* get professional advice
* are there any lessons with the sale
* make sure to have pre-purchase vet exam
* can you afford the upkeep on a horse (such as boarding, feed, and veterinary care.)

Stay focused. Keep in mind that you are selecting a horse for a particular reason or desired skill. There are many decisions and compromises lying ahead, so it helps if you set your priorities clearly at the outset.

If the overall purpose of the horse is to teach you how to ride rather than to carry you to the winner’s circle, then the selection process will emphasize different traits to fit your needs. If the horse is intended to be a long-term project rather than a stepping stone, you may need to invest more time, effort, and money in your purchase. Remember to take your time and use the tools at your disposal, such as online horse classifieds, you will thank yourself in the end.

OK is Veterinary school going to kill me?

I’m finishing up my freshmen year of college. I love animals and want to have a career with them. I’d want to specialize in Horses probably.

BUT I’m not the smartest in school, but I don’t want that to stop me. If it’s so unbearable, I don’t want to go through with it though
Thanks!

Well, maybe.

A love of animals, though a requisite, unfortunately isn’t enough to keep you going through vet school. You really have to be genuinely interested in the field otherwise all the in depth stuff will just bore you to tears. And yes it’s hard. You should get some time working or volunteering in the field to really see what it’s about. If you aren’t in love with it and you don’t like the idea of dissections, you will likely struggle.

On the flip side if you are genuinely interested in the field, pre-vet is not a good indicator of what vet school is like. There’s just so much stuff that you have to do that is unrelated to the field and it gets tedious. Once you’re in vet school everything is vet specific and it’s easier to be focused.

Your freshman year is an especially poor indicator since you are getting used to college as well. There’s a lot in the way of study skills to develop and there’s most likely a department in your school that is there to help you with that. Get an appointment to talk to a counselor about developing good study habits and it’ll make things much easier for you. Another option is the vet school outside the US that are AVMA accredited and offer excellent programs but are 5 years combined pre-vet and vet instead of 8. A degree from one of them is considered the same as one from any of the US schools when it comes to licensing as a vet. Be careful of non AVMA accredited international vet school though as the licensing process is very different.

Being the smartest is not necessary nor is a near 4.0 GPA. The mean GPAs for students admitted to each US vet school ranges from 3.19-3.78. If your not the smartest then it just means you’ll have to work a little bit harder.

It’s not an easy road but my recommendation is that you find out if you really genuinely want to do it. If you do, don’t let anything stop you.

Fell Pony – The Oldest Horse Breed That Originated In The Age Of Roman Empire

The Fell Pony gets its name, FELL, from the Norse word meaning “hill.” During the four centuries of Roman occupation on the border between England and Scotland, extra troops — French, Dutch, German, Polish, Spanish and eastern European cavalrymen — were brought in to protect Hadrian’s Wall which separated the countries and to maintain law and order. Since bones of foreign horses have been found in Northern Britain, its thought that the Fell pony may be a mixture of these horses and local ponies. A cross between foreign horses and the Celtic pony might have produced an animal closer to horse size, but larger animals couldn’t have survived in the northern fells without extra food. It’s believed that the breed stabilized through natural selection as a pony.

After the Romans withdrew there weren’t many roads until the 18th century. Fell ponies were used to transport goods throughout the country. As canals, roadways and train lines were developed in the 18th and 19th centuries, other forms of transport developed and Fell ponies were used for light farm work, carrying mail, sports events, shepherding and or carrying goods to market by cart.

Size and Showing Characteristics

The ponies average 13.1 to 13.2 hands high; the maximum height allowed for a Fell pony is 14 hands. Fells come in black, brown, bay and gray. A star and/or white on or below the hind fetlock is acceptable for showing today. Fell ponies are well groomed for shows, yet untrimmed to emphasize their natural looks.

Most Fells mature late, sometimes not until they’re seven years old. In their native country Fell ponies are left to run free until two or three. They’re brought in for basic training and turned out again for another year. They’re started under saddle around five years old. Today Fell ponies are still used for logging, farming, and shepherding. They have been quite successful in competitive endurance at the Olympic level, LeTrec, jumping and dressage and also excel at competitive and pleasure driving, and therapeutic riding.

Preserving the Fell Breed

Sue Millard of England, talked about the importance of unseen traits of a native pony at a rear equine breed event at the Kentucky Horse Park. “A good example of a native pony should tell us, just by looking at it, what kind of life its ancestors led,” Millard said. “A well built body is the first requirement. Good teeth for grazing and a well designed coat that sheds rain. Hoofs that take the wear of rough terrain. You can see all these. But natives ponies have other qualities: an even sensible temperament, hardiness, vigor, self reliance and brains. These qualities are vital to the breed but they are not visible. They’re the inner pony, the bits that you only get to know by doing the job and living the life. These invisible characteristics can’t be retained without giving the pony a job to do and if possible, allowing it to live and reproduce as its ancestors did and still do.”

For more information on the Fell pony, contact the Fell Pony Society and Conservancy of the Americas, 125 Edwards Farm Lane, Dobson, NC 27017. An FPS overseas branch is committed to conserving and promoting the Fell pony as the hill breeders of northern England have done for many centuries.

This highly acclaimed video shows the working year of Roger and Cheryl Clark, whose farm uses almost no modern machinery and who work their land using horse power. Set in the glorious East Anglian countryside, it is lasting reminder of a way of life…

Ocala: The Horse Capital of the World

Ocala, Florida may seem like just another nice town at first glance. As the county seat of Marion County in central Florida, it has a comfortable population of around 50,000, though the surrounding area has well over 300,000 inhabitants. However, Ocala is much more than just another town. Ocala has the prestigious honor being the Horse Capital of the World.

This unique reputation is well earned. From carriages to world-class competitions, if there is an equine activity, it exists in Ocala. It all starts with the horse farms, many of which are not only breed farms, but offer training as well, serving various purposes from racing, to jumping, to showmanship. These farms often offer various riding options, including guided lessons and trails for the public. The horses are also popular as a tourist attraction, often used in shows and parades.

Ocala is one of the few towns in America that is substantially supported by one industry. Some sources estimate that there are over 2,000 horse farms in the Ocala area, taking up nearly 77,000 acres. Due to this large number, there are around 44,000 jobs in and around Ocala that relate to this industry, including positions in breeding, training, and other equine support. Overall, a large percentage of the town thrives on the horses, whether in breeding and maintenance or finding ways to connect the industry to interested tourists.

It is possible to find almost any breed of horse in Ocala, either for viewing, riding, or purchase. Ocala is renowned for its quality thoroughbreds as well as its production of successful racehorses, including several Derby winners, such as Affirmed and Needles, who recently achieved a coveted Triple Crown. There are a number of stud farms, which can feature beautiful breeds such as Gypsy Gold. From there, there are popular breeds such as Arabian, American Quarter Horse, Paso Fino, and even Warmbloods.

While some people seek out Ocala to purchase or train a horse for their personal use, there are plenty of other options for individuals of all ages to get involved with the equine population in this area. For adults who do not own a farm, there are many supporting positions in grooming and care. From vets to jockeys to blacksmiths to organizers, there is a high demand for adults to help make the equine industry continue to prosper in Ocala.

For the younger population, there are numerous opportunities to get involved, through 4-H, riding lessons, parades, or even competitions. The competitions can range greatly, from novice competitions to Olympic quality events, perfect for riders of all ages and ability levels. With so much of the economy invested in the equine industry, many children in Ocala become involved at a young age in order to support the future growth of the community.

Clearly, the equine industry is an important part of Ocala, Florida, defining the town and its citizens. From professional breeders to novice riders, the Horse Capital of the World has much to offer people of all ages and from all walks of life.

Why are there fences around trees on horse farms?

When driving through the area surrounding Lexington, KY, I notice that on the horse farms there is always a section of fencing surrounding trees. Why is this?

If the horse eats the bark off the trees all the way around (and believe me, they will), it will kill the tree. “Girdling” a tree will kill it because the bark is what carries the nutrients from the roots to the top of the tree.

Usually if there’s not actual fencing around the trees, there will be something like chicken wire wrapped around it so that the horses can’t grab the bark.

Lullabies lend themselves to woozy re-creations, a sort of endless repetition that flags under the weight of the concept (putting kids to bed for their much-needed sleep) and the lack of weight accorded to the music. You might expect a Disney lullaby collection to be on a par with the most mediocre collections, but this one is really a fine set. The tunes are standard–from the famous “Brahms Lull…

Dogs & Kids

Milk and cookies, dogs and kids, horse and carriage. Some things just naturally go together. Most children and animals get along famously, and there is nothing better than the love between a child and a pet. Especially when the child is old enough to be part of the play, exercise, care and feeding of the family dog. Both the child and the dog reap huge benefits from interacting with each other from a young age.

While very few dogs are better off not in the company of children, some dogs have temperaments or low tolerance levels that make interacting with children difficult for them. This can occur even when the dog has been raised with the child and the child is old enough to understand. In these cases, usually all that’s needed is slow socialization and positive reinforcement for both child and dog. Just don’t try to force it, it will happen gradually, but it will happen!

Some dogs, especially the tiny, toy and miniatures are better off when dealing with older children. An older child understands better that the little ones need to be held and handled in certain ways. Is also easier for an older child to understand that teasing and rough play is not always the best way. They also understand the insecurity the small dog may be feeling. All dogs, no matter what size or temperament, react with growling, snarling, snapping, barking and even biting when they feel threatened or alarmed. This includes sudden movements and loud noises, something very small children do naturally.

On the other side of the coin, many large breeds, such as boxers and even labs, are capable of intimidating a small child, simply by their size. The friendliest dog in the world, no matter their size, can be overwhelming to a small child, especially one they don’t know or come into contact with on a regular basis. A child will feel threatened by the dog’s high energy level and natural exuberance. Don’t forget, the dog is a lot larger and taller than the little boy or girl!

It is the parent’s responsibility to teach children about animals. How to approach them, how to relate and respond to the dog’s behavior, whether overpowering or docile. Simple tell tale signs in a dog for example, would be the position of the tail, stance, ears – all the things as an adult we already know. ANY interaction between a child and an unfamiliar dog should be monitored closely, until the relationship has been established. This includes continued supervision of the interactions on a regular basis. Parents should always be ready to step in, whether on the dog or child’s behalf to ensure the relationship stays on the right track.

Parents again need to be vigilant, as the dog can’t say “hey guys, I haven’t been fed yet” or “my water bowl is empty and I am thirsty”. A simple schedule usually helps – feeding and watering before going to school and walks after school are a good example.

Training Principles for Beginners

Training Principles for Beginners

Allen J. Schuh

There are two beginners that concern me as I write this. I am the first beginner, at riding and being around horses, and I want to get a wild horse to train, so the horse is the second beginner. Apparently, both of us have a lot to learn.

I am a senior citizen, retired, so although new to horses, I am old in life experience. I have children, and grandchildren, and was primarily a college professor during my active years, so I am fairly well accustomed to training people, but not horses. In this article, I would like to share what I know about training people, and suggest how it might apply to training myself in basic horsemanship, and eventually, my new horse.

I will say right from the start that I do not know as much as I would like to know about training horses to do the things I think are essential for both me and the horse to have a good riding experience. There is go forward, stop, go back, turn left, turn right, but also a whole lot more. There is getting the halter on and getting the horse to go in a trailer. There is a lot to learn on both our parts.

I have tried to educate myself by reading various sources and attending quite a number of clinics within 250 miles of where I live. Nevertheless, I am still far from a well informed trainer. There is a great deal to learn, I can see that. Part of the reason is that even the clinic pros tell me that they know a (emphasis) way but it is not the (emphasis) way to get any particular job done. The obvious emphasis on the definite and indefinite articles is a legal mechanism to imply that there are many ways to get something done. There is individual technique involved. Your horse may have some peculiarity from a previous bad experience, or you have some mistaken notion as to how to get the job done, and these are changing the technique required to re-right the wrong.

Two examples come to mind from this last clinic, at the Wild Horse Expo in Reno this past weekend. One of the pros said to move the horse up to the rail to work on the turns, the other said to be 20 feet from the rail while doing the same maneuver. Both are recognized experts, but they disagree on this point. Another is that one wants his horse right at his side while they are walking, while the other wants him behind. What is a beginner who sees the pros disagreeing on these issues to do?

In training us to be trainers of our partner, our horse, there are a few principles I was able to take from the clinics that agree with principles that I know are true for training people. I will share these with you.

Attitude is Important

Training the learner (you) to be the trainer of the learner (horse) means you have to have a certain personality to be an effective trainer. It is a test of discipline and spirit. If you do not have the right attitude, you will fail. The effective trainer has learned to relax frequently. The horse will feel your mood. Many novice trainers may have the right equipment but the wrong technique. They are physically fit and can ride all day. But, the problem is 2 percent physical and 98 percent attitudinal. Every trainer of trainers talks about the problem horse, but really he ends up showing you what you are doing wrong. So, we need to redirect our attention to ourselves. That change in perception of the problem turns out to be the key to open a lot of other doors.

There are some other pillars of training that are true for all training. Define the problem and suggest a solution in a paper rehearsal before you ever get near the horse. Look at it on paper as clearly as you can state the problem. Does your suggested solution make sense? Let us start with the definition of the particular problem. Every trainer wants just one problem to work on at a time. Maybe it is the horse does not want to be caught in the morning to put on the halter and lead rope, which is essential to getting other basic ground work done. So, for some, that is the problem focus. For another, it may be that the horse will not enter a trailer, and that needs to be done for transportation. He will have to go in the trailer. So, that is the focus of attention. The issue is to focus on one problem at a time and do it well before you can move on.

Let us take both of these. Supply an operational definition of what exactly you want to accomplish. Such a definition describes the situation so that an independent observer can agree something has or not happened. In the case of the halter and lead rope problem, you would say: I want to get the horse to want to be caught in the morning and accept the halter and lead rope. Or, in the case of the trailer entry: I want the horse to walk up to the trailer and enter it so I can transport him to the other destination.

Then put the problem in the context of the current situation: Currently, when I go out to get the horse in the morning and I want to put the halter and lead rope on him, he takes off and I have trouble catching him. I want the horse to come over to me when I want to put a halter and lead rope on him. That slight redefinition begs the question: What does the horse want that I can offer him so that he will want to come over to me?

We immediately see the problem from the horse’s perspective. The horse does not want to come to me when I go out to get him in the morning. What does a horse want? If I am honest about it, he wants a 100 acre pasture with grass up to his belly and me 100 miles away. I am going to ruin his day by hauling him around to do what I want. So, I have to think of an incentive to overcome his initial hesitancy to come over to me. Once I get the halter and lead rope on him we can more on to other issues.

Assume the horse is in an enclosure with adequate fresh water and room to exercise. But, you do not leave his food in the pen. You can see where I am going with this. When you go out to get him in the morning, be holding a handful of his feed. He wants that feed. He is more likely to let you near him when you are holding feed than that constraining halter and lead rope. Then, over a few days, get him used to seeing you with having the halter, maybe over your shoulder, with the food in your hands. He will look at the food. Eventually, you will notice that he is looking for you in the morning, and will come over to get the food and will tolerate the presence of the halter and lead rope. While he is distracted eating, slip the halter on. It is simple. Do it consistently. Come out with halter and lead rope over your shoulder and his feed in your hands everyday at the same time. It is the opportunity for response practice and repetition that will increase the chances that a problem solved, stays solved. Also, handle each problem that you have selected for attention that day at least once, do something with it, even if only to introduce the issue. Not to be ignored is the lift in your own confidence as you succeed in what you set out to do. Reinforcement in the way of feedback of knowledge of results is important for your own willingness to try other problems. You should keep records perhaps in the way of a daily diary to monitor progress.

There is another issue in training the trainer. It is the question of validity. Did you accomplish what you wanted? Objectively, how do you, or someone else watching you, know if you were successful? If we all agree that the horse is looking for you in the morning, and walks up to you when he sees you, and tolerates you while he is eating and you put the halter on him, we agree you were successful with your training.

Lectures, Clinics and DVDs

Typically, at the clinics, the pro shows how to solve the problem, but then does not have the trainee repeat the performance with the horse. That really has to be done. Unless the training transfers to the real environment, what good is it? Good training programs have several important features. You should insure that any training you do maximizes the extent to which these are present. The clinics you attend should also emphasize these.

Motivation in the way of active participation by the learner is essential to good training. Some techniques such as lectures and DVDs are low on this criterion. We just sit there and watch, it is easy to get distracted. Lectures can serve to provide a meaningful organization of the training setting and materials. If the clinic focuses on establishing conditions most favorable for transfer of problem-solution to the real setting from the learning setting we will get more from it.

The best technique of training is coaching one?on?one and group exercises. The wise trainer will use group or team exercises for training and then give special help with one?on?one coaching when necessary. Of course, that is not possible with 100 sitting in the bleachers at a clinic, but it is possible if you hire a local trainer in your area or attend the small classes offered at some of the community college and extension offerings. For orientation training, the clinic style lecture with discussion format is great. With some problems, the clinics offer cases as where the horse will not enter the trailer. You bring in the horse and show he will not go in, then the pro at the clinic shows how he would handle the problem. It seems to me, problem horse clinics are now more popular and should be encouraged. You can see that some topics are best done by a novice watching an experienced trainer. It seems to me, the experienced trainer deals with the problem right away and stays with it to resolution. He generates as little extra work as possible and ignores as much as possible.

Manage Your Time

Most horse training could be made better by instituting effective time management skills. The typical novice trainer is disorganized. The first step in the day should be to specify the items to be done that day and arrange them in a priority order. Then do the important ones first. This means that the time will be focused on the most important tasks. The trainer should concentrate on just one thing at a time and do it well. Anytime you decide something needs to be accomplished, set a deadline when it should be accomplished. The experienced and efficient trainer knows that if you see something is not productive you should cut your losses and get out of it right away. Neither you nor the horse should stay with the problem so long that it is fatiguing and frustrating.

The trainer should ask herself if anything terrible would happen if she did nothing on the problem. If the answer is that nothing bad would happen, then she should not do anything on it. What harm would really be done if the saddle was not polished today? Alternatively, if the horse is not washed today? Maybe you should just brush the coat and pick the hooves? She delegates everything she possibly can to others. Maybe someone else will muck the stable? If you know of a local alternative fuels specialist who wants the horse droppings for his methane digester, maybe you could make a deal that he can have the manure free if he will come and collect it. That would free up some time so you could work more on the training of your horse.

Conclusion

I started this writing with acknowledgement that there are two beginners that concern me. I am the first beginner, at riding and being around horses, and I want to get a wild horse to train, so the horse is the second beginner. Both of us have a lot to learn. If I give careful attention to the principles discussed here there is a better chance it will be an enjoyable experience for both of us.

ONE POPULAR CHILDREN’S BOOK SERIES AUTHOR’S QUEST

School is a boring place, you might hear some middle-school students say, filled with busy work and useless repetition. Philosophy or quantum physics for kids? No way – far more likely that they’ll be too swamped with mindless memorization and an over-structured system that cares more about test scores and rote learning than about understanding the world around them. But one educator, children’s book author Kimberly Wickham, of the acclaimed “Angels and Horses” book series, is seeking to change all that, not only through her books, but also through a series of school visits and speaking engagements intended to inspire young children to think “outside the box,” and beyond the cosmic lattice…

Kimberly Wickham’s philosophy, which she expresses in the three books of her “Angels and Horses” children’s book series, including Angels and Horses, Summer of Magic Horses, and the forthcoming Angels, Horses, and Other Worldly Lessons, is based on the law of attraction, a concept first brought to national attention with the publication of “The Secret” in 2007. According to this law, it is possible to change the universe for the better by affecting it at the quantum level – simply by positive thinking and excited inquiry about the world around us.

And nobody is more capable of inquiry, WIckham says, than children, who “have a natural capacity for philosophical thought.” Therefore, Wickham advocates a curriculum of holistic learning, teaching to a child’s skills and interests and challenging him or her to think critically and to enjoy learning, rather than merely “teaching to the test.”

Therefore, Wickham is launching upon a new schools tour, aimed at bringing the love of learning – and an awareness of the Law of Attraction – to the lives of children everywhere. The tour will kick off shortly after the publication of the newest book in the Angels and Horses series, “Angels, Horses, and Other Worldly Lessons,” this summer.
Anybody know any good fictional horse books for teens?

I love horses and stuff so i was just wondering if anyone knew of any good books about stuff with or relating to horses…

I have already read The First Horse I See, Blind Beauty, and Shadow Horse

Definitely read “The Heavenly Horse from the Outermost West” and “Piper at the Gate” by Mary Stanton. They are very well written fantasy story starring horses, kind of along the vein of “Watershiup Down.” Really good stuff.

“Black Beauty” by Anna Sewell is geared toward a slightly younger audience, however it is beautifully written and a must-read for horse lovers. It really puts you into the innocent yet intelligent mindset of a horse.

“Equus” by Peter Shaffer. This is a rather dark and sometimes even disturbing play about a disturbed youth with an obsession for horses.

History of The Great Ford Mustang

As far as the consumer is concerned, the history of the great Ford Mustang began when it was shown to the public at New York’s World Exhibition. The prototypes had been in existence since 1962, with the Mustang 1 (T-5) being first introduced to the motor racing world at the Watkins Glen Grand Prix where Stirling Moss and Dan Gurney drove it for a few laps each as a demo.

In the early 1960s, Ford desperately needed a new car to compete with the sporty Chevrolet Corsair Monza, and its first attempt, the Falcon Future, failed to compete. A brand new car was needed, and the idea for the Mustang was born. It was sporty and quick and a four seater. It was appealing to youngsters, and the prototype was well received when shown at the motor racing circuits.

It went in production in 1964, and was an instant hit. Its launch on 17th April, 1964 was the beginning of what was to be the most popular car ever in American history, and it sold half a million in its first year. Its customers included every age and it was equally popular to men and women.

Many of its parts were taken from the failed Falcon, and its immediate success had as much to do with the almost perfect advertising campaign as it had to do with looks and speed. The advertising power of the three major television networks was used extensively, and with its distinctive mane and tail galloping across the red, white and blue of America the ‘Pony Car’ was the phenomenon of its age, representing the flavor of the 1960s more perfectly than its designers could ever have dreamt possible.

It was a car of its day that arrived with perfect timing. Later to be called the 1964 1/2, the original Mustang was available as a convertible and as a coupe, both with chrome wrap-around fenders, the distinctive chrome grill with running pony, and a lengthened hood. Although it claimed to have four seats, the back seat was a bit small and it also sported three tails lights on each side. It has sold a million by 1966, although before that the GT and fastback model had been introduced.

The car continued to progress, and by the end of the 60s had become longer by four inches, and a lot heavier than the original, much of this in response to the development of Chevrolet’s Firebird and Pontiac. It was the Corvette, however, that brought the Mustang into the road racing arena. The Mustang was so popular, especially with the young, that Ford were desperate to race it against the Corvette. However, only production two seaters were allowed to race, and to enable them to do this at least 100 two seaters had be produced by January 1965.

This was achieved with the help of Mustang fan and racer, Carol Shelby, who modified 100 of the 2+2 models into GT 350 models, in the process re-equipping them to render them more suitable for racing. The suspension, wheel and brakes were all modified, and the cars were to become the basis of many future models that are even now are much sought after.

During the early 1970s the Mustang lost its way a bit and became a bit too big and unwieldy. The original grace and elan that so attracted early admirers was lost, and it became
just another car. Part of this was due to emissions regulations, but sales dropped so much that Ford had to rethink its design strategy with the Mustang.

The Mustang II was introduced in 1974, and although it was small and vastly underpowered, it takes its place in the history of the car because it brought to a halt the drop in sales. It sold because of economy in fuel, and the 1973 OPEC fuel embargo. People were afraid that a gas guzzler would hurt their pockets, and so temporarily went for the smaller car. However, this did not last long, and 1975 brought back the V8 engine to the Mustang. However, although it had a 5 liter engine, the carburetor was too small and the catalytic converter combined with that to render it lifeless.

Then came a period of relative stability although there were a few trim changes. Fans must have seen the end coming because the late 1970s saw a slight increase in sales, rather than the drop that model now deserved. The Cobra II and King Cobra versions did little to spark a return to the glory days for the 1960s, and Ford made a last ditch attempt to rewrite the Mustang in 1979. The new Mustang was available as a coup’ or fastback with a bit more room inside than the either the original or the ill fated Mustang II.

However, the running horse had gone, and the rear lights lost their distinctive three segments: this expanded to six, while the side scallop also disappeared. It no longer resembled a Mustang! Alterations continued to be made, and the California Highway Patrol found a use for a special coupe model as a high speed pursuit vehicle. With its 157 HP V8 engine, this car was used by a number of law enforcement agent up until 1993, when Ford killed them off.

The fans were wrong, however, and development continued as the Mustang conformed with the coming of fuel injection, air bags and other essential improvements, though the original concept had completely disappeared. In 2005 Ford finally ditched the ancient Fox platform and introduced that now used for the Lincoln and the Thunderbird. The newest Mustang has reverted to some of the original features, and it is a miracle that the car has survived so long.

Nobody involved in 1962 development team would have believed that the great Ford Mustang would still be around 45 years later.
