Brenda and her horse Harvard (Harvard Yard) training wheel jumpers at BTRC in Buffalo

Training a horse……which one is better?
A hack-more or a Bit??? Which one is better to train them with they are 2 mares around the age of 14 friendly but were show horses then used as breeding…..one of them folows you around the yard.
My uncle said you have more control with a hack-more because it cuts off there air way.
Any horse trainers out there that have experience??
I didnt mean to say cut off there air way i read somewhere that it does that but gess it was wrong. I do know that it is ment to shock the horse when you pull back (because its a feeling there not used to) thats why they stop (i dont pull back hard at all) but ours isent really tight or anything we wouldent put our horses in danger
By the way my uncle isent training our horses he lives 7 hours away but he has trained his horses and i didnt mean to make it sound like my uncle said it cuts off there air way i read that somewhere.
As with all devices, there are only as good as the hands on the ends of the rein. Clearly if these two mares have been show horses in the past, there is probably no need for any harsh devices what so ever. If these horses are as kind and loving as you say, and they go when you want to then a simple snaffle will do. Don’t forget when you pull back to say Whoa and squeeze with your knees. Remember that the snaffle needs to be properly adjusted on your horses head so make sure that the snaffle bit causes a slight wrinkle in the corner of the mouth. If your horse wants to run off with the snaffle by throwing its head and pulling you a little, add a caveson and or a running martingale and the caveson is properly adjusted if you can ease your finger beneath it when it is tight enough, but not so tight as to cause the horse great discomfort. Good luck!

Bringing Home Your New Baby. What’s Next? You’ve made it! After all the frustration and false hopes you’ve finally found the right horse, and he’s coming home tomorrow! You can’t wait to show him off to your friends who’ll see how wonderful he is to ride. Boy, are they going to be amazed! No, they’re not: because you’re not going to ride him tomorrow. Or the next day, or the rest of the week. The tricky thing to understand about horse riding, for beginners, is that a horse needs time to adjust to his new home....
